Abstract

Pregnancy is a complex biological process, involving significant physiological and psychological changes in a woman's body. In addition to biological aspects, pregnancy is also influenced by socio-cultural factors that shape the experiences of pregnant women. In South Sulawesi, traditional cultural beliefs and practices are still very much present, including rituals, dietary restrictions, and the use of traditional birth attendants. This literature review examines how cultural practices in Sulawesi influence pregnancy care. The research used the PRISMA method to identify relevant literature from various academic databases. Results show that certain dietary restrictions and rituals can have both good and bad effects on maternal and foetal health. Cultural beliefs, such as the use of mantras and the important role of traditional birth attendants, provide spiritual and psychological support, but can also hinder adequate nutrition. These findings emphasise the need for integration between modern health practices and traditional beliefs to improve maternal health. This study will help health providers design more effective and culturally sensitive programmes to improve maternal and infant health in Sulawesi.

Abstract

Cesarean section (sectio caesarea) is a surgical procedure that penetrates a mother's abdomen to deliver one or more babies, commonly referred to as laparotomy and hysterotomy. Therefore, cesarean delivery is also known as artificial childbirth. According to data from the Medical Records of Bhayangkara Hospital Makassar, the number of cesarean section deliveries in 2021 was 314 (93.1%) for inpatient care and 23 (6.8%) for outpatient care. In 2022, there were 201 (25.5%) inpatient cases and 586 (74.4%) outpatient cases. The objective of this study is to examine the implementation of incision area care and evaluate its effectiveness in addressing the risk of infection at Bhayangkara Hospital Makassar. Before the intervention, the assessment of Mrs. D, a 28-year-old patient in the Nuri Ward of Bhayangkara Hospital Makassar, showed increased pain with a severity scale of 7 (severe) and redness around the incision area. However, after three consecutive days of incision area care intervention, the results showed a reduction in pain to a scale of 2 (mild), and the redness around the incision area also decreased.

Abstract

Maternal anaemia, a condition in which haemoglobin levels drop during pregnancy, is a serious health problem especially in developing countries. The CDC identifies anaemia as haemoglobin levels below 11 gr/dl in the first trimester and less than 10.5 gr/dl in the second trimester, causing symptoms such as excessive fatigue, pale skin, and rapid heartbeat. Risk factors include young age, low education, low socioeconomic status, and deficiencies in micro-nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12 and folate. Anaemia in pregnancy risks prematurity, insufficient iron stores in the newborn, and even perinatal death. This study used a systematic approach in collecting relevant literature, emphasising the importance of a holistic approach in the management of maternal anaemia, including knowledge improvement, nutritional supplementation, and socioeconomic support. Results show that deficiencies in iron, other nutrients and pre-pregnancy factors play an important role in anaemia risk. With a global prevalence of 29.9% in women of reproductive age, this study calls for more effective and innovative intervention strategies to address maternal anaemia, including oral iron therapy, treatment of comorbidities and health education. In conclusion, maternal anaemia requires an integrated approach involving health services, family support and cultural adaptation to improve adherence and well-being of pregnant women and fetuses.
