Abstract

Increasing human needs cause an increase in production on an industrial scale and can have an impact on increasing contamination of the aquatic environment. Efforts to improve water quality can be made by removing contaminants using renewable activated carbon originating from agricultural waste such as rice husks and teak sawdust. This research aims to examine the adsorption capacity of activated carbon from rice husks (RHAC) and teak sawdust (TSAC) on a binary mixture of Fe(II)/Cu(II) as well as the level of selectivity of each adsorbent on Fe(II) and Cu(II) ions. RHAC and TSAC activated carbon are produced through carbonization processes (T=400 °C, t=60 minutes), reflux (NaOH 2N, T=100 °C, t=120 minutes), chemical activation using H3PO4 (30%, 1:3, b/b) and physics (furnace). The results of this research are that RHAC and TSAC activated carbon have the functional groups O-H (str), C-H (str), C≡C, C=C, C-O (str), and C-O-P (str). The surface character of RHAC and TSAC activated carbon is dominated by the elements C, O, and P. The results of the Fe(II) and Cu(II) ion adsorption treatment using RHAC and TSAC activated carbon follow PSO kinetic modeling with R2 values of 0.9221 and 0.9565 on RHAC and 0.9915 and 0.97 on TSAC. TSAC-activated carbon more selectively adsorbs Fe(II) and Cu(II) ions compared to RHAC-activated carbon with adsorption percentages reaching 97.34% and 87.82%, respectively.

Abstract

Perubahan dan perkembangan teknologi di abad 21 menyebabkan fenomena era disrupsi pada tatanan kehidupan manusia secara menyeluruh bahkan juga turut mempengaruhi gereja sebagai instituti. Gereja dituntut untuk beradaptasi dan menyesuaikan diri dengan berbagai aspek transformasi, mencakup aspek sosial, teknologi, maupun ekonomi. Universitas sebagai institusi pendidikan dapat berperan serta dalam meningkatkan pemberdayaan ekonomi di gereja melalui kegiatan pengadian kepada masyarakat. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada masyarakat di GKJ Salatiga Utara bertujuan untuk memberdayakan jemaat gereja dalam kegiatan fermentasi buah berbasis kearifan lokal dan secara khusus untuk mengadakan pelatihan fermentasi buah yang layak konsumsi dan dapat dimanfaatkan dalam acara perjamuan kudus. Metode fermentasi buah dilakukan dengan cara memotong halus buah nanas dan jambu kemudian ditambahkan ragi fermipan dan didiamkan selama 3-4 hari. Setelah 3-4 hari produk fermentasi minuman buah diukur pH dan uji organoleptiknya. Pengukuran pH buah nanas diperoleh pH 5-3,7 dari hari pertama hingga hari ketujuh, sedangkan pada buah jambu merah pH yang diperoleh pada hari ke-1 hari ke-7 yaitu pH 5,5 – 3,8. Adanya penurunan pH pada proses fermentasi karena pada proses fermentasi membentuk produk samping berupa asam lemah seperti asam asetat, asam laktat, asam sitrat, asam benzoat, asam sorbat atau asam lainnya sehingga mempengaruhi nilai pH dari minuman buah fermentasi.

Abstract

Dye waste, whether derived from synthetic or natural substances, can pollute the environment if not properly managed. This pollution can degrade the quality of water, soil, and nearby ecosystems. In Kampung Batik Laweyan, one of the well-known batik centers in the Surakarta area, improper waste management poses a serious threat to the sustainability of the batik industry and the health of the surrounding community. A major issue lies in the lack of awareness and understanding about the ecotoxicological effects of dye waste, particularly synthetic dyes, which often contain heavy metals and harmful chemicals. This community service activity was initiated to address this issue through education and empowerment. The main objective was to increase knowledge about the environmental and health hazards posed by dye waste. Activities included health check-ups, questionnaire distribution to assess baseline understanding, educational sessions on ecotoxicology, and practical training on the use of batik brushes. This training aimed to reduce direct skin exposure to harmful substances and minimize the overuse of dyes during the batik-making process. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ awareness of the risks associated with synthetic dyes, including heavy metal exposure and their long-term effects on aquatic life and soil organisms. Participants also gained better insight into sustainable waste management practices. In conclusion, the program successfully raised awareness and encouraged more responsible behavior among batik artisans. It is hoped that such initiatives can continue to promote environmentally friendly practices in the traditional batik industry, contributing to a healthier ecosystem and safer working conditions.
