Abstract

The prevalence of domestic violence in Nigeria remains alarmingly high, exhibiting no discernible indications of decline. Prevalence of this phenomenon is observed among couples irrespective of their age, ethnic background, religious affiliation, or socioeconomic standing.  This study aims to investigate the relationship between poverty and dissatisfaction as predictors of spousal violence among sandwich students. The research employed a descriptive design of the ex-post-facto kind. A multi-stage selection procedure was employed to pick a sample of 120 respondents from three departments. The participants were assessed using appropriate standardized measures (instruments) and the collected data were subjected to statistical analysis utilizing the percentage and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and Multiple Regression techniques at a significance level of 0.05. Hence, in light of the research indicating a significant correlation between poverty and domestic violence, it is suggested that counseling professionals and psychologists should enhance their endeavors to organize seminars for student couples.

Abstract

Public speaking skills are essential for postgraduate students, thus, many individuals still face challenges with anxiety when it comes to presenting their ideas or research findings in public settings. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between self-esteem and public speaking anxiety among postgraduate students at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from 96 postgraduate students which were properly filled out of the 100 administered. The results revealed that 56.3% of the students experience low levels of public speaking anxiety, 29.2% moderate levels, and 14.6% high levels. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to analyze the relationship between self-esteem and public speaking anxiety. The findings indicated a weak negative correlation (r = -0.109) between the two variables, with a p-value of 0.290, which is greater than the significance level of 0.05. Consequently, the null hypothesis was not rejected, confirming that there is no significant relationship between self-esteem and public speaking anxiety among postgraduate students. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the university implement public speaking training workshops and provide counseling services to support students with high levels of public speaking anxiety.

Abstract

The study explores the perceptions of Teachers on Guidance and Counselling Services in Junior Secondary Schools in Moro Local Government of Kwara State, Nigeria. The study used a descriptive survey design, which was mainly qualitative. The survey design is typically suitable when individuals aim to gather the opinions of participants to describe the characteristics of an existing phenomenon. The total participants of the study were 10 teachers. The primary method of data collection employed in this study was semi-structured interviews. The interviews utilised open-ended questions that aligned with the study's objectives and research questions. This study's findings indicate a common understanding among educators that guidance and counselling play a crucial role in fostering student development and ensuring school success. Concerns exist regarding the availability and effectiveness of these services. The findings suggest that schools should focus on enhancing the number of trained counsellors to provide sufficient support for students. This could entail governmental efforts to allocate resources for creating more positions and enhancing the ratios of counsellors to students.
