Abstract

Performing procedure text in English has its own complexities especially for twelve graders since they need to clearly present a series of action in logical order. When students performed their presentations online, they felt it was not as difficult as having an onsite presentation. Yet, the transition of learning mode in the current post-pandemic brings a greater challenge to them. To overcome this issue, this classroom action research offered the use of flashcards containing images and keywords that became the main attraction for students. The participants of this study were 28 students of a senior high school in Kediri. The results indicate that flashcards were significantly helpful in enhancing the twelve graders proficiency in performing procedure text with the increase from pre-test score of 76.79 into the post-test score 83.79 with a significance level of 000. It means that flashcards are able to improve student learning outcomes, especially in performing speaking for procedure text. Therefore, English speaking teachers are recommended to use flashcard to enrich student’s vocabulary and support the systematic presentation of procedure text.

Abstract

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) faces challenges in engaging students with grammar instruction. Grammar is a critical component of language education that underpins effective communication and comprehension. This study aims to develop an Educaplay-based grammar assessment tool for tenth-grade students at Senior High School 5 Taruna Brawijaya in Kediri, Indonesia.  The instruments used for data collection included a grammar test, validated by experts to ensure content validity, and a questionnaire for expert feedback. The Research and Development (R&D) method was employed, following the steps outlined by Borg and Gall (1983), which involve product development, validation, and iterative revisions. Data analysis involved assessing the validity, reliability, difficulty index, and item discrimination of the grammar test. The findings indicate that the tool is valid and reliable, with a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.884, although there is a need for more challenging items to better cater to a range of student abilities. It is concluded that Educaplay provides an effective and engaging alternative to traditional grammar assessments. These results are expected to provide valuable insights into how digital platforms such as Educaplay can be used to improve grammar teaching and student learning outcomes, not only in Indonesia but also in other countries facing similar challenges. The study recommends further development of the tool to incorporate more complex items and suggests exploring the long-term effects of using digital tools like Educaplay in grammar education.

Abstract

Speaking demands self-confidence and composure when dealing with other people. Furthermore, communicating in English is a big barrier for many students due to self-efficacy, anxiety, and emotional intelligence. This study examined direct and indirect variable contributions. This path analysis study used multiple regression and mediated model. This study involved 128 of the tenth graders students at SMA Senopati, Sidoarjo. To collect the data, the instruments used a closed-ended questionnaire about self-efficacy, anxiety, emotional intelligence and speaking test. This study yielded seven conclusions. First, self-efficacy had a weak effect on speaking performance (estimate =.128, p-value.000). The estimate value of.506, p-value.001, showed that self-efficacy contributes significantly to emotional intelligence. Anxiety's contribution to emotional intelligence was minimal (estimate value -.397, p-value.005). The fourth finding showed that anxiety directly affects speaking performance (estimate value -.069), p-value.000. The fifth finding showed that emotional intelligence had a weak effect on speaking performance (estimate value.034, p-value.004). Significant indirect influence of self-efficacy through emotional intelligence on speaking performance (Sobel test=2.1220>1.96, p-value 0.033<.05). Anxiety indirectly affects speaking performance through emotional intelligence (Sobel test=-.2.0043>1.96, p-value 0.045<.05).

Abstract

Javanese culture-based numeracy test using the Rasch model. Numeracy is one of the six basic literacies students need to improve in the 21st century. Objectives: This research aimed to develop a numeracy test based on Javanese culture using the Rasch model. Methods: The ADDIE model is used in the numeracy development model. The question grid is based on modified curriculum-13 and the Minimum Competency Assessment (MCA) numeracy framework. Data was obtained from tests aimed at 300 SMP Negeri 5 Kediri City students, which were determined using simple probabilistic random sampling techniques. Quantitative descriptive analysis assisted by SPSS and Jamovi programs was used to analyze reliability, item suitability tests, and difficulty levels. Findings: The research results showed that 50 numeracy questions with Javanese cultural content had been developed, with 17 questions of medium validity and 33 questions of high validity. The reliability estimate is 0.833, which is very high. In the test of item suitability and item difficulty level, it was found that four items, namely items 1, 2, 6, and 9, were not suitable for use in numeracy test, while 46 other items matched the Rasch model and were suitable for use. Conclusion: This research provides important information for further development and analysis studies related to Javanese culture-based numeracy tests. Keywords: test instrument, numeracy, Javanese culture, ADDIE, Rasch model.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202470
