Abstract

This research aims to identify and explain the signifiers, signified, denotations, connotations meanings, and myths embedded in the signs of the TV series Criminal Minds poster. In this research, the authors used the descriptive qualitative method to identify, analyze, and explain the signs in the Criminal Minds TV series poster. The authors also employ Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes' semiotic approach in the research. The primary data of this research is taken from both the verbal and nonverbal signs in Criminal Minds TV Series posters. This research shows that there are nine nonverbal and two verbal signs. Furthermore, after analyzing all of the signs (both verbal and nonverbal) in Saussure and Barthes' semiotic approach, this study found that all of the signs carry specific messages. Its purpose is to give the audience teasers or clues about the story, which tells about the journey of all main characters of Criminal Minds. Moreover, the myth commonly found across the signs in this TV series poster is to attract more potential viewers to watch the series.

Abstract

TikTok has been effective in cultivating a creative arena where users can easily access and make digital material by using a collection of shared audios, filters, text-to-speech, and a special system for user involvement. Digital platform such as TikTok continues to promote social conduct motivated by the need for acceptance from the community. This paper explores Queer’s English language used in Dean Modah's TikTok videos. By applying a sociolinguistic approach, this paper examines the English language used by Queer community to express their identity. The results show that the English language used by Queer community undergoes a morphological process, particularly a coinage process. The meanings of Queer language are different from the lexical meanings. The new meaning formulation denotes the dominant personal function of the language used. The new meaning formulation in Queer English language use is to support the community members to freely express themselves. It can be concluded that word formulation, changes in meaning, and use of language identify the identity of the Queer community.

Abstract

This research delves into how Chinese murals in Kya-Kya, a Chinatown of Surabaya, visually convey meaning from the semiotic landscape point of view. Through Widgren's Theory of Form, Function, Process, and Context, this study seeks to discover how Chinese and Peranakan Cultures are represented in two Chinese Murals in Kya-Kya. The data source of this research is taken from the researchers` photographs of a few representatives of Chinese Murals in Kya-Kya. The data analyzed in this study include text (words), pictures, and colors. The findings show that the murals' text, pictures, colors, and shapes carry messages closely tied to the area's history, culture, and norms. They act as complex communication tools. The first mural uses color and Chinese symbols that match traditional Chinese cultural meanings, showing solid cultural connections. The second mural focuses more on the area's history, especially the influence of Chinese immigrants and Peranakan culture on local business and daily life. This is shown through cultural icons like traditional clothes, food, and building styles, a mixture of Chinese, Peranakan, and Javanese cultures. Both murals celebrate Kya-Kya's rich cultural heritage. The implications of this research extend to developing conservation strategies that respect both the artistic qualities and cultural meanings embedded within the murals, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of how communities express and sustain their heritage in contemporary contexts.
