Abstract

This study aims to describe the dynamics of public opinion in X around the Data Protection Law (UU PDP) that emerged before and after its ratification. Previous research on the UU PDP has only focused on normative juridical aspects but not on public opinion aspects. In fact, research on public opinion is important because public opinion has the power to advocate. This study analyzed 3,374 tweets about the UU PDP published from January 24, 2020, to October 17, 2023. Researchers obtained the data using the scraping method using the Python twscrape library based on the search keywords “Undang-Undang Pelindungan Data Pribadi", “UU PDP", and "RUU PDP". This study adopts the sentiment analysis model of the Indonesian RoBERTa Base Sentiment Classifier and found that neutral-tone tweets dominated conversations that arose before and after the president's passing of the PDP law. A qualitative analysis of the word cloud shows that neutral-tone tweets are facts related to the UU PDP. Negative opinion dominated public opinion against the UU PDP in both conversation periods. The dynamics of public opinion towards the UU PDP reflect the digital movement of opinion (DMO). This is because the number of opinion tweets is volatile and always depends on the intensity of the facts and important momentum related to the UU PDP.Key words: sentiment analysis, public opinion, Data Protection Law, UU PDP, X

Abstract

Abstract

Previous research has shown that hashtags on social media become a collective means for people to counter the discourse echoed by other groups. This study expands on previous research by taking the case of tweets with the tag #KamiUMKMdiTikTok trending on X. This study aimed to describe the dynamics of conversation in X related to tweets with the tag #KamiUMKMdiTikTok. This study applied social network analysis (SNA) to 1,403 Indonesian tweets and their amplification (retweets) published from September 25 to October 10, 2023. The results of SNA with the Gephi application show that communication networks have tenuous characteristics because the delivery of opinions in the form of tweets is spread across many conversation clusters, so the dominant actor does not control the continuity of the conversation in general. Therefore, the emergence of tweets with the tag #KamiUMKMdiTikTok is relatively short-lived and reflects the practice of the digital movement of opinion. The study also applied qualitative content analysis to identify narrative framing strategies in tweets. Analysis shows that the hashtag #KamiUMKMdiTikTok reflects the disappointment and criticism of merchants at TikTok Shop against the government's insistence that TikTok Shop stop its operations in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the X conversation network around the issue of Rohingya refugees in Indonesia. The Rohingya are one of the few ethnic Muslims who, since 2009, have sailed to Indonesia from their home country of Myanmar to seek asylum due to horizontal conflict. This phenomenon also caught the attention of netizens in Indonesia as one of the network community entities. This study used a total of 80,924 datasets in the form of original tweets along with replies and amplifications in the form of retweets that appeared throughout November to December 2023 to build a visualization of the X conversation network around the issue of Rohingya refugees. This study adopts the social network analysis (SNA) method to see influential actors based on the degree centrality measurement metric. In addition, researchers also applied sentiment analysis to identify the sentiment in the original tweet. SNA points out that four accounts of ordinary citizens and one account of informational media (neohistoria_id) dominate the conversation network. Meanwhile, sentiment analysis showed that conversations around the issue of Rohingya refugees in Indonesia were dominated by negative tweets of rejection. The bad stigma that X users raise against Rohingya refugees is linked to mass media reports or hoax information that describes the bad behavior of Rohingya refugees.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the practice of media political economy among Let’s Play (LP) video creators in Indonesia, with a focus on the YouTuber MiawAug. LP content is gaining popularity among gamers; however, prior research has generally only highlighted commodification aspects related to creators and audiences. Using Vincent Mosco's theory of media political economy, this study analyzes MiawAug's practices of commodification, spatialization, and structuration in content creation. The researchers employed descriptive qualitative methods, collecting data from literature reviews and document analysis related to the MiawAug YouTube channel. Findings reveal that MiawAug engages in commodification processes—specifically content, audience, and labor commodification—by producing videos featuring popular games to generate ad revenue. Additionally, MiawAug implements spatialization through the use of diverse media platforms, collaboration with other creators, and merchandise sales. MiawAug also employs structuration by using polite language in videos, setting himself apart from many gaming content creators who use swearing as an entertainment element. Furthermore, he leverages his popularity to promote indie games, encouraging viewer support through video promotions.

Abstract

Indonesia, an archipelago significantly vulnerable to the climate crisis, faces numerous natural disasters impacting various sectors. Despite the critical need for public awareness and proactive measures, media coverage of climate crisis issues in Indonesia remains limited. This study investigates the level of resonance in online media reporting on the climate crisis from January to December 2023, focusing on keywords related to climate change, forest fires, and air pollution. The research uses topic modeling and Niklas Luhmann's systems theory to examine how four major Indonesian online media outlets address climate crisis issues. The findings reveal that while kompas.com and detik.com show consistent coverage, ANTARA and CNBC Indonesia place less emphasis on these topics. The study highlights the need for enhanced and more impactful media coverage to raise public awareness and drive meaningful action against the climate crisis. The results underscore the importance of media collaboration with governments, NGOs, and communities to increase the resonance of climate crisis issues in public discourse. Future research should explore the reasons behind the variation in media coverage and its impact on public perception and policy decisions, including the role of social media platforms.

Abstract

This study aims to identify actors, dominant discourses, and discourse coalitions in the debate surrounding the implementation of analog switch-off (ASO) in Indonesia on November 2, 2022 until the implementation of total ASO on August 17, 2023. This study employs discourse network analysis method with data sources in the form of 283 articles from 12 national online news outlets. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) became the most dominant actor, followed by the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), West Java citizens, Central Java citizens, and East Java citizens. The dominant discourses centered on criticisms of set-top box (STB) distribution performance; the perceived benefits of digitalization for the public; critiques of ASO implementation that overlooked citizen and stakeholder readiness; and repeated calls for intensified government socialization efforts. The debate produced six discourse coalitions–two supporting ASO and four criticizing it. While these coalitions revealed clear alignments and contestations, their influence remained limited, shaping only the level of discourse structuration rather than affecting policy outcomes
