Abstract

This research is motivated by the reality of the decadence of religious life in this day and age. On the one being many people begin to lose awareness of the importance of religion in building human life. However, on the other side, religious people are increasingly showing a discrepancy between the essential purpose of religious existence and their social behavior. Based on this reality, this article aims to elaborate some philosophical reflections on religious life today based on the symbols in the wuwung mbaru gendang of the Manggarai people. As an important part of the traditional house of the Manggarai people, the wuwung mbaru gendang has a meaning that is relevant to the religious issues of today. Its meaning will be elaborated based on Paul Ricoeur's theory of Symbol Interpretation. The direction of this article is the discovery of meanings in the wuwung mbaru gendang to be used as introspective material for researchers in reading the religious context of their era. The method used is literature study and direct observation of the object studied. The findings are first, the three symbols on the wuwung mbaru gendang reveal human identity as a noble creature. That nobleness is what spurs humans to make the highest respect for humans regardless of their religious background. Secondly, the quality of one's relationship with others can always be attributed to how one builds his or her spiritual-religious aspect. Vertical relations with the Ultimate Reality always get their continuity in good horizontal relations with others.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the function of the Mbaru Gendang as a public sphere in resolving land conflicts in Manggarai. The Mbaru Gendang as the traditional house of the Manggarai people has become a central place in every public policy making, including in resolving land conflicts. Manggarai people's awareness of the function of the Mbaru Gendang can be explored more deeply by using Jurgen Habermas' philosophy about public sphere. According to Habermas, a public sphere is not just there for locative information, but a condition that enables a joint discourse, openly and freely, for the sake of reaching a public decision. Thus, a public sphere is conditioning rational communication and dialogue through a discursive process. The methodology used in this study is qualitative phenomenological by conducting interviews with Manggarai traditional leaders. The results of the interviews are then elaborated with Habermas' philosophy about public sphere. The finding of this study is that the Mbaru Gendang has become a space for discourse in resolving land conflicts in Manggarai. This issue requires open and free rational communication and dialogue.

Abstract

The Church believed that her faith had social relevance. God, who is believed in, is responded to in concrete cultural and political situations. Therefore, the Church is no longer an isolated religious institution but integral to people's life experiences. Currently, the Indonesian nation is not only in a political crisis but also a crisis of political behavior. This crisis is exacerbated because the political elite has no shame in politics. Empirically, it is effortless to find examples of how there is no sense of shame because they have been guilty in society, and most prominently in the attitudes of political elites. It is no secret that many leaders and political elites are guilty of causing various crises, but when appearing in public, they do not show that they are guilty. Thus, this study aims to find the ethical values of the passion story of Jesus based on the Gospel of John. John presents the story of Jesus' passion for showing Jesus' empire as King through His "exaltation" on the Cross. Through this reading, leaders and public officials know and behave as leaders in front of the people. This research is a critical reading of the story of the passion of Jesus so that ethical points are found on how the political elite should act in the public sphere.
