Abstract

This study deals with the political theory of Thomas Hobbes and its implications to the political dynamism in Indonesia. The aim of this research is to analyze the philosophical concept of Hobbes on human rights and the theory of liberalism, and its relevance to the current situation in Indonesia, which has recently been exposed to the politics of populism. The presence of the populist movement is not new in Indonesia; but the rise of the politics of identity, it could threaten the protection of human rights and liberal democracy. We utilize the methodology of text analysis based on Hobbes’s original writing, Leviathan, and his other political treatises to explore his account on human rights and liberalism, and then employ Hobbes’s thoughts to investigate the phenomenon of populism. We divide the study into two sections, the first deals with the philosophy of human rights which Hobbes elucidates in the perspective of his hypothetical notion of the state of nature, the concept of authority, and his theory of liberalism; the second discusses populism in Indonesia today. The study found that the concept of human rights and liberalism would lead to awareness of mutual respect in society, while the populist movement becomes a real challenge to the implementation of human rights and the development of liberal democracy. The philosophy of human rights is in accordance with the political dynamism of Indonesian society. On the contrary, the populist movement could possibly plunge the country into a conflictual precipice of religious, racial-regional, and socio-political identities.

Abstract

This study aims to explain Jean Baudrillard's concept of hyperreality specifically the objectification of the subject in the context of contemporary culture. According to Jean Baudrillard, in the world of hyperreality which is controlled by the latest information and communication technology, humans have lost their subjectivity. The object has controlled the subject so that there is no other choice for the subject but to allow himself to be in the control of the object. The objectification character of this subject is evident in the subject's passivity when using the internet, being in front of the television, and also the advertising machine. According to Baudrillard, in the face of these three forms of contemporary culture, the subject has been reduced to an object so that the subjectivity and dimensions of the subject's consciousness become dead. The methodology used in this study is a qualitative method by conducting a literature study. The author specifically explores Jean Baudrillard's writings entitled “Simulacra and Simulation” (1981) which discusses a lot about the concept of hyperreality. The findings of this study are (1) subjects in contemporary culture have been reduced to objects through the simulation and simulacra skills of mass media technology, especially the internet, television, and advertising; (2) the objectification of this subject can be countered by re-realizing human subjectivity, namely the subject of consciousness.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is on the relationship between the state and religion in the Indonesian political space from the perspective of Machiavelli's state-religion relationship. The relationship between religion and the state in the Indonesian political space needs to be reviewed because in certain contexts religion appears to be more powerful than the state, which itself is more expansive. Machiavelli's concept of the relationship between the state and religion is the starting point for examining the relationship between the state and religion in Indonesia. This paper uses a qualitative approach accompanied by a critical analysis of Machiavelli's thoughts on the relationship between state and religion and the relationship between state and religion as it appears in the Indonesian political sphere. As a result, this paper shows that in Indonesia, religion seems to be bigger than the state in its politics. The power of religion over the state is evident in various facts that occur in society. This fact can only be overcome by curbing the influence of religion by following Machiavelli's thought. Religion is not removed from the political space of the Indonesian state, but is used as a tool that can achieve a better common life while strengthening the state.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the reality of the decadence of religious life in this day and age. On the one being many people begin to lose awareness of the importance of religion in building human life. However, on the other side, religious people are increasingly showing a discrepancy between the essential purpose of religious existence and their social behavior. Based on this reality, this article aims to elaborate some philosophical reflections on religious life today based on the symbols in the wuwung mbaru gendang of the Manggarai people. As an important part of the traditional house of the Manggarai people, the wuwung mbaru gendang has a meaning that is relevant to the religious issues of today. Its meaning will be elaborated based on Paul Ricoeur's theory of Symbol Interpretation. The direction of this article is the discovery of meanings in the wuwung mbaru gendang to be used as introspective material for researchers in reading the religious context of their era. The method used is literature study and direct observation of the object studied. The findings are first, the three symbols on the wuwung mbaru gendang reveal human identity as a noble creature. That nobleness is what spurs humans to make the highest respect for humans regardless of their religious background. Secondly, the quality of one's relationship with others can always be attributed to how one builds his or her spiritual-religious aspect. Vertical relations with the Ultimate Reality always get their continuity in good horizontal relations with others.

Abstract

This study focuses on exploring the concept of love according to Soren Kierkegaard's thoughts as a symbol of faith in the midst of the outbreak of religious discrimination in Indonesia. The purpose of this paper is to understand the concept of love according to Soren Kierkegaard and its relevance for religious discrimination that often occurs in Indonesia. Discrimination is common in religious life. The reason is because religion tends to be seen from the building and its rites. The religion that actually contains the values of goodness, truth and the highest value of love is narrowed in meaning. Values whose meaning is very positive and contained in the Scriptures of every religion have narrowed meanings. Religion as a place where the value of love grows is finally sacrificed due to the narrow understanding of its adherents. Soren Kierkegaard gives a very deep understanding of love. This philosopher of existentialism posits about the stages of human life, namely the aesthetic stage, the ethical stage and the religious stage. The concept of love also undergoes changes as human life progresses according to the three stages of human life. The author uses a phenomelogical approach and uses literature studies in completing this paper. According to the author, the concept of love in Kierkegaard's thinking provides the right relevance to the outbreak of religious discrimination that occurred in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

The research study pays attention to the philosophical concept of ‘back to nature’ education according to Jean-Jacques Rousseau. His philosophical literature studies regarding educational ideas are contained in his famous work entitled “Emile” (1762) according to J.J Rousseau and his influence on the development of modern education. Specifically, for the implementation of the Independent Curriculum at the elementary school level in Indonesia today. In this research, the author uses a qualitative-descriptive method, namely describing the situation of implementing project-based learning in the Independent Curriculum in elementary schools and exploring Rousseau’s educational thoughts based on data obtained from literature studies. The theoretical framework is increasingly focused on Rousseau’s view of ‘back to nature’ education based on age groups; in this case it is childhood (2-12 years). As a result, the author found that the education pattern is a return to nature, meaning a return to human nature, where children as an educational subject should continue to improve their good educational competencies, specifically sensory development in childhood in line with the principles of a free and loving nature. This seems to be in line with the development of the Independent Curriculum which places children at the center of education so that they can learn freely, creatively with special skills in project-based and thematic learning programs, so that they can show their natural talents.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is to present the meaning of existentialism according to Søren Kierkegaard in relation to today's contemporary digital lifestyle. Kierkegaard emphasizes individual existence in personal choice and authentic life. This can provide a quality contribution for humans to examine the implications of the digital era on their human experience. The digital age sets aside the fact that humans are driven almost entirely by the virtual reality of social media and digital connectivity. Humans are faced with the challenge of how to protect their identity in an increasingly complex world. Digital platforms can both obscure and illuminate human existence anxiety. It can affect the human self-concept and the dimensions that exist within it. This paper aims to generate an understanding of how Kirkegaard's philosophy of existentialism can navigate the existential dilemma that the digital era brings to humans today. The method used in this paper is a qualitative approach through literature study. The author specifically explores writings about individuals in Kierkegaard's perspective and other supporting sources. The author finds that human efforts to interpret their existence determine the direction of human life. Connectivity in the digital era cannot completely thwart humans from giving meaning to their lives.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of the crowd on the authenticity of faith through Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophy, particularly in the context of modern digital culture and technological advancements. In this era, popular culture and social media have blurred individual identity, fostering banality of faith—a shallow religiosity devoid of personal meaning. This research employs a qualitative method through library research, including a critical analysis of Kierkegaard's works and contemporary social phenomena. The focus is on how crowds push individuals to adopt majority views without deep reflection, undermining personal commitment to faith. Social media exacerbates this condition through algorithms that amplify collective trends, further trapping individuals in superficial religious formalities. Kierkegaard asserts that authentic faith requires personal commitment, deep reflection, and the courage to break away from the crowd's influence. The consequences of faith often demand suffering as a form of responsibility for life choices. Findings reveal that crowds and digital culture significantly contribute to the banality of faith, causing individuals to lose existential desire and the freedom to cultivate an authentic relationship with God. Kierkegaard's insights remain highly relevant, offering guidance toward authentic and personal faith amidst the challenges of modernity.
