Abstract

This research aims to identify appraisal devices in two editorial texts in the Javanese magazine Panjebar Semangat on the news texts of Ferdy Sambo case entitled Kasus Sambo Isih Dawa and Ganjaran Murwat Tumrap Kejujuran and describe the ideology of the author of the editorial text. Data were analyzed using the Appraisal System in Functional Systemic Linguistics, including Attitude, Graduation, and Engagement. The results of the appraisal analysis on the first text are 69 attitudes data from 68 clauses. A total of 69 attitudes data were found, consisting of 33 positive attitudes and 36 negative attitudes. Monogloss data with 44 data dominate these attitudes compared to heterogloss data with 25 data. In terms of Graduation, journalists used the intensifier type only eight times. For the second text, 55 attitudes data from 48 clauses. The total of 55 data was dominated by positive evaluations of 43 data, while there were only 12 negative evaluations. It can be interpreted that this editorial text has a very positive nuance. The text is dominated by monogloss data, namely 47 data, compared to heterogloss data, which is only 8 data. The outcomes of the analysis conducted on the editorial texts within the Panjebar Semangat Javanese magazine indicate a predominant reliance on judgment as the principal method of Appraisal, succeeded by appreciation and affect. The analysis explicitly emphasizes the assessment of individual character traits, with Richard, Sambo, and Putri identified as the primary subjects of evaluation. This finding underscores the potential of news as a mechanism for the exercise of social control, with the deployment of judgment serving to consolidate specific societal values and beliefs. This editorial text makes journalists themselves the dominant source of evaluators. In terms of Graduation, journalists also tend to increase their Attitude appraisal using intensifiers. The dominance of monogloss in the editorial text is linguistic evidence that the journalist deliberately composed the editorial text using the point of view of himself.

Abstract

This study explores a crucial gap in the pragmatics of public communication by examining speech acts and politeness strategies in Indonesian train announcements. Using a qualitative descriptive approach rooted in pragmatics, data were collected through recordings and note-taking of both manual and automated announcements from long-distance (KAJJ) and commuter (KRL) trains. The analysis followed a four-stage framework: domain analysis identified operational contexts, taxonomic analysis categorized speech acts and politeness strategies, componential analysis examined patterns and variations, and cultural theme analysis connected linguistic features to broader cultural norms. Key findings revealed that KAJJ announcements prioritize directive speech acts framed by negative politeness and bald-on-record strategies to ensure clarity and passenger compliance. Conversely, KRL announcements blend assertive, expressive, and directive acts supported by positive politeness to foster inclusivity and encourage cooperation. Both services employ boosters to emphasize urgency, while the absence of hedges ensures directness. These findings underline how operational priorities shape linguistic choices, aligning communication strategies with passenger needs and cultural expectations. The study not only advances methodological rigor in analyzing public announcements but also provides practical recommendations for designing effective, culturally sensitive communication systems. These insights contribute to enhancing public transportation services and have broader implications for improving communication frameworks in high-stakes contexts worldwide.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the recontextualization of reports on the Constitutional Court's decision regarding the requirements for presidential and vice presidential candidates on Twitter/ X accounts of @kompascom and @tvonenews. A qualitative analysis were conducted using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach, which includes description, interpretation, and explanation. The text description analysis utilized appraisal framework. According to text analysis of @kompascom, the Constitutional Court's decision is portrayed negatively. The article describes negative happiness, negative satisfaction, and negative quality as reasons for people's sadness and anger. The decision is considered to be full of fabrications and is seen as paving the way for Gibran to become Prabowo's vice presidential candidate. The news report from @tvonenews describes the Constitutional Court's decision as interesting due to its positive impact on Gibran's opportunity to run as a vice presidential candidate. However, the report also indirectly highlights a negative aspect of the decision by reporting that Anwar Usman committed a serious ethical violation. (2) According to the discourse practice analysis, @kompascom connects the Constitutional Court's decision to Gibran's candidacy, while @tvonenews connects it more to Anwar Usman's ethical violations. (3) The analysis of social practices reveals changes and stabilizations of social values in various matters, including public opinion, political polarization, and youth involvement. The latter is key to achieving a balance between stability and change, as well as upholding the rule of law.

Abstract

This ethnolinguistic study explores the cultural, moral, and socio-political dimensions of social assistance discourse among citizens of Surakarta, Indonesia. Critical to addressing economic inequality, social assistance programs are examined through linguistic analysis of discourse digital ethnographically observed from January to March 2024, coinciding with increased political activity surrounding the presidential election. Data are drawn from social media discussions, which reveal the complex interaction between Javanese cultural values and contemporary socio-political realities in shaping perceptions of social assistance distribution. The results show that people in Surakarta view social assistance as a political ploy that exploits people's daily living conditions and ultimately violates moral values. The combination of Javanese and Indonesian terms reflects ethical considerations and community expectations of fairness and integrity in the distribution of social assistance. An analysis of cultural meanings identified three cultural interpretations: the politicization of social assistance, economic dependence in everyday life, and moral judgments embedded in the ethical framework of Javanese culture. Governments must adopt culturally sensitive policies that integrate local moral frameworks into aid distribution strategies, promoting transparency and accountability. By understanding the dynamics of these different languages and cultures, policymakers can design more compelling, ethically grounded social assistance initiatives that align with the values of the community in Surakarta and its surrounding areas.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how students employ evaluative language in argumentative writing using Appraisal theory, specifically the categories of Attitude, Graduation, and Engagement to uncover the connection between evaluative strategies and ideological positioning, a relatively unexplored area in EFL research. Employing a mixed-methods design, the study analysed argumentative essays and survey responses from participants in the 2024 Argumentative Writing Contest. Data were collected from 21 submissions, with four texts selected based on argumentative quality, linguistic richness, and regional representation (Bengkulu, Kotawaringin, Bekasi, and Yogyakarta). A survey questionnaire accompanied the text analysis to gather student insights on their writing experiences. The textual data from students’ writings were examined using the Appraisal framework in systemic functional linguistics (SFL), and the survey data from the questionnaire were processed through the interactive analysis model in qualitative research, involving data condensation, display, and verification. Triangulation and member checking ensured data credibility. Findings revealed that students’ evaluative language mainly utilized appreciation to represent ideological stance and assessing regional learning environments. Most of the writers used intensifier markers, while students from remote regions used more monoglossic expressions. Cultural norms shaped argumentation styles, with some preferring indirect persuasion. This suggests that evaluative writing is both linguistically and culturally situated. The study’s implications advocate for culturally responsive and linguistically targeted instruction to bridge regional disparities in argumentative writing competence.
