Abstract

Bluru Kidul Village is an area located near the northeastern coast of Sidoarjo, where its geographical position provides significant benefits for the community. Consequently, the majority of residents work as fishermen and live side by side with the marine ecosystem. Due to the existence of Bluru Kidul Village, Sidoarjo City is often referred to as a fisheries or coastal city. The fish resources in these waters are dominated by small pelagic fish, large pelagic fish, and demersal fish. One of the most widely used fishing gears is the gill net. This study applied treatments with soaking durations of 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours. The objectives of this research were to identify the composition of gill net catches, analyze the effect of different soaking times on gill net catches, and determine the optimal soaking duration for catching Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger) using gill nets. Data analysis was conducted using statistical methods, including analysis of variance (ANOVA) and normality tests to ensure data suitability. To determine whether soaking duration had a significant effect, a further statistical test, namely the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test, was applied to identify which soaking time produced the best catch of Indian mackerel. The results indicated that there were significant differences in catch variables between the 4-hour treatment and the 3-hour and 2-hour treatments, whereas the difference between the 3-hour and 2-hour treatments was not significant. This finding demonstrates that the 4-hour soaking duration resulted in significantly different catch outcomes compared to the 3-hour and 2-hour durations, but no significant difference was observed between the 3-hour and 2-hour treatments.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using light sticks and without lights on catching ribbonfish from the number of catches. The method used in this study is an experimental fishing method with data analysis using the T test. This study was conducted in the waters of Pasongsongan Sumenep. The results of the ribbonfish catch during 16 trips with light sticks totaled 163 fish, while those without lights totaled 67 fish. The type of ribbonfish caught was dominated by the Trichiurus lepturus species. From the catch results, a T test analysis was carried out and the results of the Paired samples test showed a sig. value (2-tailed) of 0.000 <0.05, which means there is a significant difference in the number of catches in the use of light sticks and without lights placed on the fishing hook position. This is because ribbonfish have phototactic properties towards light, in addition to searching for food more dominantly using the sense of sight.

Abstract

The fishing gear operated by fishermen along the coast of Grajagan Beach to catch fish is a bottom gill net, using different mesh sizes of 3, 4, and 6 inches. The method used in this study was the Experimental Fishing method, which involved direct observation over nine repetitions using different mesh sizes. Observations were conducted on the quantity of fish caught, and direct interviews were carried out with fishermen regarding the use of gill nets at Grajagan Beach, Banyuwangi, East Java. The composition of the catch showed that the largest proportion by weight was shovel-nosed ray, accounting for 15%, while lobster represented the highest number of individuals caught, at 12%. To determine whether there was an effect of mesh size on the catch yield, an ANOVA test was conducted and produced significant results, indicating that differences in mesh size significantly influenced the catch. In this study, a follow-up (Post Hoc) test was also performed using Tukey’s Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test. The results of the post hoc test showed that the use of a 6-inch mesh size had a substantial effect on the catch yield.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of environmental friendliness of purse seine fishing gear used by fishermen landing their catches at the Ocean Fishing Port (PPS) Cilacap, Central Java. Environmentally friendly fishing gear is an essential component in achieving sustainable fisheries management, as it can minimize negative impacts on marine ecosystems and ensure the sustainability of fish resources. Purse seine is known as a highly efficient fishing gear for catching pelagic fish; however, its potential environmental impacts, such as bycatch, habitat degradation, and overexploitation, require further assessment. The research methods included field observations, interviews with fishermen, and secondary data analysis from relevant institutions, using indicators based on the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) to evaluate environmental friendliness aspects. The results of this study are expected to illustrate the extent to which the use of purse seine at PPS Cilacap meets the criteria of environmentally friendly fishing gear, as well as to provide recommendations for more sustainable capture fisheries management. This research is expected to serve as a reference for the government and stakeholders in formulating policies on the use of effective, equitable, and environmentally friendly fishing gear.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the dynamics of potential fishing areas in Cilamaya Waters, Karawang Regency, using Aqua MODIS satellite imagery data. The method used is quantitative descriptive with a remote sensing approach and spatial analysis. Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a data for 2025 were processed using SeaDAS and ArcGIS, then analyzed using an overlay method. Potential areas were identified as areas with sea surface temperatures of 28–32°C and chlorophyll-a concentrations of 0.31–2 mg/m³. The results show that the average sea surface temperature ranges from 28.0–29.4°C, while the average chlorophyll-a ranges from 0.88–1.34 mg/m³. The West Monsoon has the highest average temperature of 29.4°C, while the East Monsoon has the highest chlorophyll-a concentration of 1.34 mg/m³. The overlay results indicate that the location of potential fishing areas changes with each season. The highest catch occurred in the first transition season, at 5.875 kg, or 27.72%, while the lowest was in the eastern season, at 4.533 kg, or 21.38%. This study concludes that Aqua MODIS imagery can be used to describe the environmental suitability and dynamics of potential fishing areas, but does not directly indicate fish abundance.

Abstract

The high fishing activity targeting kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) at the Kejawanan Fishing Port has the potential to increase pressure on the sustainability of fish resources. This study aimed to analyze the sustainable potential, determine the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) and Total Allowable Catch (TAC), and analyze the exploitation level of kawakawa resources at Kejawanan Fishing Port. The study employed a survey method with a descriptive quantitative approach. Catch and fishing effort data from 2014–2024 were analyzed. The analysis included fishing gear standardization using the Fishing Power Index (FPI), Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) calculation, and sustainable potential estimation using the Schaefer and Fox surplus production models. The results showed that cast net had the highest productivity and was therefore selected as the standard fishing gear. The Fox model estimated an MSY of 76.87 tons/year with an optimum fishing effort of 210.97 trips/year. The estimated TAC was 61.50 tons/year, with an allowable fishing effort of 116.67 trips/year. The exploitation level reached 356.81%, indicating that kawakawa resources at Kejawanan Fishing Port were in an overexploited condition. Therefore, fishing effort and catch should be controlled to maintain the sustainability of kawakawa resources at Kejawanan Fishing Port.
