Abstract

Indonesian, as a national language and the language of unity, has enormous potential to go global. One effort to achieve this goal is through the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program. BIPA plays an important role in introducing Indonesian language and culture to the world, as well as improving the Indonesian language skills of foreign speakers. The aim of this research is to create innovative and interesting BIPA teaching materials for students at Yale University, United States. Dodol Garut, a traditional Garut food that is rich in taste and history, was chosen as the main theme of this teaching material. The research methodology used is qualitative, with a participatory approach. Researchers reviewed literature regarding Dodol Garut and involved Yale University students in creating teaching materials through discussions, surveys and interviews. The collected data was analyzed to better understand students' reactions, perceptions and understanding of Dodol Garut and Indonesian culture. Based on these findings, BIPA teaching materials were created using a project-based approach. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the culinary exploration of Dodol Garut and develop innovative learning materials based on their experiences. It is hoped that this research can produce interactive, relevant and detailed BIPA teaching materials, so that foreign students at Yale University can enrich and improve their learning experience in understanding Indonesian culture through Dodol Garut.

Abstract

Literature not only functions as a means of entertainment but also contains educational messages conveyed implicitly, one of which is through folklore. In the context of modern society, the issue of environmental damage is a serious problem that often escapes attention. Criticism of ecological degradation has long been implied in folklore passed down from generation to generation. This article aims to reconstruct forms of ecological criticism based on Greg Garrard's ecocritical theory and explore environmental conservation efforts through local wisdom values in the Toponymy Bunga Rampai Village Story in Sragen Regency. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with listening and note-taking techniques to select stories containing ecological criticism elements. The results of the survey showed 18 findings of ecological criticism from 10 folklore, consisting of five criticisms of the wilderness, five of animals, four of the earth, three of the living environment, and one of pollution. These findings indicate that folklore is not only a reflection of culture but also a means of educational criticism of environmental issues. By linking these criticisms to local wisdom values, this article concludes that folklore contributes to conservative efforts in a preventive manner against the ecological crisis through a more down-to-earth and contextual approach to the power of local wisdom values.
