Abstract

Abstract

This research is based on the need to address the lack of historical empathy in Indonesia through social studies education. It highlights the importance of promoting the concept of historical empathy, which is currently not widely recognized in the country. The study focuses on the perspectives of 15 junior high school social studies teachers in Palembang City regarding historical empathy.  Data was collected through questionnaires, with respondents answering various questions about historical empathy, including its definition, significance, relevant topics, suitable learning resources, methods, challenges faced, and recommendations for teaching it effectively. The findings indicate that there are misconceptions among teachers regarding historical empathy, particularly in distinguishing it from sympathy and understanding its psychological and historical aspects. Despite these challenges, the teachers acknowledge the importance of integrating historical empathy into social studies education. This research provides a foundational understanding of teachers' perspectives on historical empathy in Indonesia.

Abstract

The purpose of this study explains the Japanese attack strategy and Dutch defense and its impact on the environment in Palembang. The method used is the historical method by utilizing primary sources such as memoirs of historical actors, contemporaneous newspapers, as well as secondary sources such as books and scientific articles. This research also uses geography with an environmental perspective. The results show that Japan implemented a combined land, sea and air strategy with paratroopers as the main force to capture Palembang. Meanwhile, the Dutch focused on protecting airfields and oil refineries with scorched earth tactics if pressed. Environmental impacts of the conflict included air pollution from oil refinery fires and pollution of the Musi River by oil spills and war waste. The novelty of this research lies in the study of the environmental aspects of Japanese military operations in Palembang that have not been widely discussed before. This research provides a new perspective on the impact of war on the environment in a historical context.

Abstract

The role of history learning in reducing the empathy crisis is to ground historical empathy. However, teaching and research on historical empathy has not been very massive because in Indonesia the concept of historical empathy is relatively new and not much empirical data has been adopted by academics. This research aims to map the concept and teaching of historical empathy in history learning. This research uses qualitative research with a literature review method, that is: first, identifying the problem statement; second, identifying the problem statement; and third, identifying the problem statement: first, identifying the problem statement; second, identifying relevant research; third, selecting research; fourth, mapping data; and fifth, compiling, summarizing, and reporting results. The results of this study include the definition of historical empathy from various experts presented with a continuum line that is preceded by historical debates and followed by elements of historical empathy from the cognitive and affective domains and a combination of both, as well as historical empathy didactics which include: learning models that have been developed; suitable learning materials or themes; learning reflection or evaluation activities; and the level of achievement of historical empathy for students. The implication of this study is as a literature option for further researchers and as a reference material for history teachers in designing lessons that want to develop historical empathy skills in order to strengthen the character of the “Profil Pelajar Pancasila" for students who are tolerant, caring, democratic, and open-minded.
