Abstract

According to the Survei Kesehatan Indonesia 2023, the prevalence of dental caries in Indonesia reached 82.8%. The survey also revealed that the proportion of dental and oral health issues in the country was 56.9%. Dental caries and poor oral hygiene are common issues among primary school-aged children in Indonesia. The highest proportion of dental and oral health problems among school-aged children was observed in the 5-9 age group at 62.6%, followed by the 10-14 age group at 48.8%. Several factors were found to be associated with children's dental and oral health, such as demographic characteristics and levels of knowledge about dental and oral health. Age, gender, and parental occupation status are the demographic traits that have frequently been linked to population behaviour. Knowledge encompasses everything acquired through learning and sensory interactions, including taste, hearing, sight, and reasoning about specific subjects. In the context of dental and oral health, knowledge topics such as the development of cavities, primary causes of oral health issues, and effective treatments for maintaining oral hygiene. Various factors, such as education, occupation, age, gender, interests, experiences, and cultural influences, can impact an individual's level of understanding. Improving children's knowledge of oral health can significantly contribute to lowering the prevalence of dental caries.

Abstract

Environmental breakdown and global warming have become two of the important issues today. One of the factors contributing to those issues is improper waste management. Medical waste from dental practices significantly contributes to pollution and accumulated waste, causing environmental degradation. The concept of Green Dentistry was introduced in 2007 as a solution to preserve natural resources and reduce waste. Green Dentistry is a multi-sectoral approach based on the 4R principles: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink. Reduce means reducing the consumption of resources as well as becoming more energy efficient. Reuse involves encouraging the prolonged use of an item to prevent substantial waste production. Recycle refers to reprocessing an item into a new product so that it can be useful again. Rethink means redeveloping mindset as a strategy to change, as well as promoting effective alteration. Practices aligned with the concept of Green Dentistry need to be implemented to achieve environmental sustainability. Ideas of forming an eco-friendly dental practice must be supported with knowledge and feasible solutions to overcome the barriers.

Abstract

Background : Melatonin is a natural antioxidant produced by human body which has various functions for human health. Melatonin has an anti-inflammatory effect as an antioxidant, neutralizes free radicals, and supports collagen and bone formation. Aim : This study aimed to assess the concentration of salivary antioxidant melatonin in patients with chronic periodontitis. Methods : A total of 18 participants under 45 years old were selected using purposive sampling at RSGM-P FKG Usakti. Saliva samples (1 ml) were collected in the morning. The Mann-Whitney test was applied to compare melatonin levels between healthy individuals and those with chronic periodontitis. Results : Mean of salivary melatonin concentration was lower in chronic periodontitis patients (77.72 ± 81.78) compared to healthy individuals (85.28 ± 54.50), though this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.479). Conclusion : Despite lower salivary melatonin levels in patients with chronic periodontitis, the difference was not statistically significant.

Abstract

According to data from Riset Kesehatan Dasar 2018 (Riskesdas), 88.8% of Indonesians had dental cavities. The Decayed (D) component contributed the highest number, 4.5, to the average Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) score of 7.1. This demonstrates how widespread oral health and dental issues are in Indonesia. The bulk of dental and oral health issues affect children, who make up half of the world's population. According to data, the percentage of caries in children aged 5 to 9 years was 92.6%, whereas the percentage in children aged 10 to 14 years was 73.4%. This figure illustrates that dental health problems in children are very common and require greater attention. Various factors contribute to the high prevalence of dental and oral problems among children. These factors include individual bad habits, unhealthy diet as well as lack of parental awareness and attention in maintaining children's dental hygiene. Sweet foods and drinks containing excessive sugar, coupled with irregular tooth brushing habits, are one of the main causes of dental caries in children. Therefore, prevention efforts through education about the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and healthy eating patterns are very necessary to reduce dental and oral health problems among children.
