Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries and gingivitis are the most prevalent oral health problems in Indonesian elementary school children. Predictors that are significantly associated with dental caries and gingivitis in children are the parents’ socioeconomic status and children’s oral health behavior. Terbanggi Besar district is the largest area and population in Lampung Province. The lack of updated dental and oral health data needs to be refined to address oral health disparities and achieve improvements. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the dental and oral health status of grade V and VI elementary school children in Terbanggi Besar district, Central Lampung. Method: This cross-sectional study elected 410 students from 5 public elementary schools using convenience sampling. Sociodemographic and oral health behavior data were retrieved from a self-administered questionnaire. In addition, a clinical examination consisted of the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index, the Gingival Index (GI), and the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHIS). The Mann-Whitney statistical test was used to analyze the differences in dental caries severity and gingival status between selected variables. Results: Dental caries was present in 75.6% of children, while gingivitis was present in 52% of children. The mean DMFT score was significantly higher in children with poor oral hygiene (2.80 + 2.67, p = 0.001). The mean GI score was significantly higher in children aged 12 years old or above (0.37 + 0.48, p = 0.025) and in those that had unemployed fathers (0.25 + 0.29, p = 0.030) and poor oral hygiene (0.31 + 0.40, p = 0.000). Conclusion: Improving dental and oral health promotion with regard to elementary school children is highly recommended. The dental and oral health status of grade V and VI elementary school children in Terbanggi Besar district in Central Lampung was found to be moderate, with a high prevalence of dental caries.

Abstract

One of the things that contribute to global warming and environmental damage is medical waste from dental practice. Green Dentistry is an eco-friendly concept of dental practice. Green Dentistry is present as a solution to preserve natural resources, reducing energy use and lessen the waste produced. This study aimed to obtain an overview of knowledge, attitudes, and practice of green dentistry among dentists and dental students. This scoping review uses a literature search on the Google Scholar database guided by PRISMA. The study population was dentists and dental students. Inclusion criteria were observational studies on green dentistry published during 2018 - 2022 in English and Indonesian language. Articles were selected based on tittle, abstract and full text. Extracted data was presented in tables and summarized for an overview of evidence. From 88 articles obtained, 11 articles were included in this review. Each article contains knowledge, attitudes and practice regarding green dentistry, eco-friendly practices in dental clinic, and medical waste management. Each article uses a questionnaire with various number of domains and items. Knowledge, attitudes, and practice of dentists and dental students regarding green dentistry are still not evenly distributed. Postgraduate dentists were found to have better knowledge. Barriers that were often encountered are cost factors and lack of training or information. Knowledge regarding green dentistry concept among dentist and dental students still needs to be improved. Providing information about specific actions related to the concept of green dentistry is necessary.

Abstract

Objectives: The misalignment of teeth and/or jaws caused by abnormalities in the dynamic process of craniofacial growth and development is known as malocclusion. Over half of children and adolescents worldwide experience some form of malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment is the process of adjusting the position of teeth and jaws to achieve optimal occlusion. In recent decades, there has been a global surge in the need for orthodontic treatment among adults. This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting interest in orthodontic treatment among adults in Jakarta. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2023. A total of 196 adults were retrieved by purposive sampling from public places located in Jakarta. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on demographic characteristics, knowledge regarding orthodontic treatment, self-perception, psychosocial, and oral disorder factors. Logistic regression analysis was carried out with a level of significance less than 0.05. Results: Majority of respondents had a good level of knowledge regarding orthodontic treatment (63.3%) and were interested in undergoing orthodontic treatment (85.7%). There was a significant association between other opinions about respondents’ dental arrangement and interest in orthodontic treatment (p = 0.018; 95% CI = 0.135 – 0.826). Self-perception factors, oral disorder factors, and demographic characteristics were not significant in predicting interest in orthodontic treatment. Conclusion: For adults in Jakarta, other people's opinion about respondents’ dental arrangements is the only psychosocial factor correlated with interest in orthodontic treatment. The importance of orthodontic care still needs to be improved for adults in Jakarta.
