Abstract

Environmental breakdown and global warming have become two of the important issues today. One of the factors contributing to those issues is improper waste management. Medical waste from dental practices significantly contributes to pollution and accumulated waste, causing environmental degradation. The concept of Green Dentistry was introduced in 2007 as a solution to preserve natural resources and reduce waste. Green Dentistry is a multi-sectoral approach based on the 4R principles: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink. Reduce means reducing the consumption of resources as well as becoming more energy efficient. Reuse involves encouraging the prolonged use of an item to prevent substantial waste production. Recycle refers to reprocessing an item into a new product so that it can be useful again. Rethink means redeveloping mindset as a strategy to change, as well as promoting effective alteration. Practices aligned with the concept of Green Dentistry need to be implemented to achieve environmental sustainability. Ideas of forming an eco-friendly dental practice must be supported with knowledge and feasible solutions to overcome the barriers.

Abstract

Crowded teeth are one of the dental and oral health issues that need attention in Indonesia. Crowded teeth can be caused by genetic factors, growth abnormalities, or bad habits formed from a young age. Knowledge about the causes, impacts, prevention, and treatment of crowded teeth is important to enhance from an early age. The Community Service activity by the Faculty of Dentistry team from Trisakti University aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the GBI HMJ Jakarta congregation in recognizing, preventing, and treating dental crowding issues. This activity involved 34 members of GBI HMJ Jakarta, consisting of administrators and the community. The educational material provided consists of the causes, effects, prevention, and treatment of crowded teeth. The training materials include simulations on how to brush teeth and use dental floss. The evaluation of the activity implementation shows an increase in knowledge with a significant difference in the average pre-test and post-test scores (p=0.000). This increase in knowledge is expected to reduce the negative impact of dental and oral health issues, particularly crowded teeth, in the community.

Abstract

According to the Survei Kesehatan Indonesia 2023, the prevalence of dental caries in Indonesia reached 82.8%. The survey also revealed that the proportion of dental and oral health issues in the country was 56.9%. Dental caries and poor oral hygiene are common issues among primary school-aged children in Indonesia. The highest proportion of dental and oral health problems among school-aged children was observed in the 5-9 age group at 62.6%, followed by the 10-14 age group at 48.8%. Several factors were found to be associated with children's dental and oral health, such as demographic characteristics and levels of knowledge about dental and oral health. Age, gender, and parental occupation status are the demographic traits that have frequently been linked to population behaviour. Knowledge encompasses everything acquired through learning and sensory interactions, including taste, hearing, sight, and reasoning about specific subjects. In the context of dental and oral health, knowledge topics such as the development of cavities, primary causes of oral health issues, and effective treatments for maintaining oral hygiene. Various factors, such as education, occupation, age, gender, interests, experiences, and cultural influences, can impact an individual's level of understanding. Improving children's knowledge of oral health can significantly contribute to lowering the prevalence of dental caries.

Abstract

Malocclusion is a functional disorder that can negatively impact a person’s physical and emotional health, often requiring treatment. The prevalence of malocclusion in Indonesia is approximately 80% of the total population, making it a significant dental health issue. According to the Health Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Balitbangkes RI), the highest prevalence is found in the 12-15 age group, at 15.6%. Orthodontic treatment aims to correct improve function, facial aesthetics, and occlusal contact. The need for treatment can be assessed using the Orthodontic Treatment Needs Index (IKPO), which evaluates the severity of malocclusion based on three variables: knowledge, awareness, and willingness. Demographic factors such as gender, age, economic status, and administrative region can influence access to orthodontic services. Differences in demographic characteristics can lead to differences in knowledge, attitudes, and actions towards dental health, including malocclusion. It is important to improve education about oral health and ensure equal access to orthodontic treatment, especially in underserved areas.
