Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out and describe the students’ narrative text equivalence, to find out the equivalence level of students’ translation, and to figure out the students’ difficulties in translating and their solution to overcome the problem. The population of the research was a sixth semester students’ of English study program, while the participant was 14 students. The study used a descriptive qualitative method with the instruments is test. The research findings showed that 52.5% of students’ translation exceeded the ‘average’ standard, it was dynamic equivalence translation with almost half of participant did that. Then, the second highest category was formal equivalence with the total 34.4% or at the ‘low’ standard. In the last, students’ translate non-equivalence with the total 7.2%, or at ‘very low’ standard. Meanwhile, the research finding showed that there were two primary difficulties faced by the students: difficulty to understand the meaning of the text and difficulty finding the most equivalent meaning in bahasa. To overcome those problems, they used a guessing strategy to understand the meaning of the sentence. Overall, it can be concluded that the equivalence of the translation narrative text English into Indonesia by the sixth semester students of English study program was fair.

Abstract

The phenomenon of anxious students often occure in the process of learning English, especially in class. Where students feel scared and embarrassed when speaking English. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the factor of students anxiety level when speaking english at SMAN 1 Tembilahan. This research design is the descriptive quantitative and the research instrument is questionnaire, containing 10 statements, and the total population was 313 people, and the sampling technique in this study is the purposive sampling which was the students of class X-9 at SMAN 1 Tembilahan. Based on the result of calculating student responses to 10 questionnaire statements, There were several factors that make students got speaking anxiety, such as the learner beliefs about language learning where it is placed 212,5 of amount, that it was in very high position, the next factor is Instructor beliefs about language teaching where it is placed 137 of amount, that is was in high position and the next factor is personal and interpersonal anxieties, classroom procedures, and language testing where it is placed 107,2, 104,5, and 110 of amount, that is was in average position. The result indicate that student’s speaking anxiety of the Tenth Grade Students at SMAN 1 Tembilahan was 134,3. Based on the result of the research that student’s speaking anxiety of the tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Tembilahan is in categorized high level. Based on this analysis, it was conclude that the level of students' anxiety was still unable to manage their own speaking anxiety.

Abstract

The importance of conducting this research is to introduce students to the fact that learning speaking english can help students get used to speaking english. The researcher conducted this research to find out information about students’ perception of learning english speaking at the Islamic boarding school of tunas harapan tembilahan as an illustration of whether the implementation of learning english speaking can support students’english proficiency. The research design is quantitative descriptive. The population of this study were all students of class X which only consisted of 1 class, from the Islamic boarding school of tunas harapan tembilahan. To determine the sample, researchers used total sampling technique,, the total number of population is 20 students. In collecting data, researchers used a questionnaire as a research tool. This questionnaire was used to find out how the students’ perceptions of the implementation of learning english speaking at the Islamic boarding school of tunas harapan tembilahan. The questionnaire used in the study is presented in 5 ( five) alternatives commonly known as the likert scale. The results showed that the students’ perception of learning speaking english was good (70.2%). Because 70.2% lies between 66-100%. So, it can be said that the students’ perception of learnig speaking english at the Islamic boarding school of tunas harapan tembilahan is good.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study examines the effectiveness of using English songs to enhance vocabulary mastery among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Tembilahan Hulu. The research design involved two groups: the experimental group (class XI MIPA 2) and the control group (class XI MIPA 3), with 32 and 34 students respectively, totaling 66 students. The primary objective of the study was to identify significant differences in English vocabulary mastery between students taught using song media and those taught using conventional methods. Additionally, the study aimed to evaluate the overall effectiveness of using songs as a teaching medium for vocabulary enhancement. Data collection involved administering pre-tests and post-tests to both groups to measure vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment. The experimental group received instruction through English songs, while the control group continued with conventional teaching methods. The data were analyzed using SPSS 27 for Windows, focusing on hypothesis testing and discussions to draw meaningful conclusions. The results revealed a significant improvement in the vocabulary mastery of students in the experimental group compared to those in the control group. The average pre-test score for the experimental group was 22.50, which increased to 45.77 in the post- test, while the control group’s average score increased from 21.34 in the pre-test to 32.98 in the post-test. The statistical analysis showed a significance level of Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) 0.001, which is less than the threshold of 0.050, indicating a statistically significant difference. These findings suggest that the use of English songs as a teaching medium is more effective than conventional methods in enhancing vocabulary mastery among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1. Tembilahan Hulu. The study highlights the potential benefits of incorporating music into language instruction to create a more engaging and effective learning experience for students.
