Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out and describe the students’ narrative text equivalence, to find out the equivalence level of students’ translation, and to figure out the students’ difficulties in translating and their solution to overcome the problem. The population of the research was a sixth semester students’ of English study program, while the participant was 14 students. The study used a descriptive qualitative method with the instruments is test. The research findings showed that 52.5% of students’ translation exceeded the ‘average’ standard, it was dynamic equivalence translation with almost half of participant did that. Then, the second highest category was formal equivalence with the total 34.4% or at the ‘low’ standard. In the last, students’ translate non-equivalence with the total 7.2%, or at ‘very low’ standard. Meanwhile, the research finding showed that there were two primary difficulties faced by the students: difficulty to understand the meaning of the text and difficulty finding the most equivalent meaning in bahasa. To overcome those problems, they used a guessing strategy to understand the meaning of the sentence. Overall, it can be concluded that the equivalence of the translation narrative text English into Indonesia by the sixth semester students of English study program was fair.

Abstract

Analyzing the translation procedures in the novel The Princess Diaries written by Meg Cabot is the aim of the study. The translator's purpose in translating is to identify and to know amount of translation technique between the Source Language (English) into Target Language (Indonesia). In this study used descriptive analysis.  Along with explaining and describing the viewpoint, and also analyzes the research item. The selected data was analyzed by using the concepts of Newmark and other relevant theories. Based on the analysis, nine procedures were found in translation, those were: addition, subtraction, transposition, borrowing, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, omission, deletion or reduction, and modulation. The findings showed that all of the procedures and adjustment were applied in the translation processes. Out of 70 sentences being analyzed, 10 sentences apply additional, 8 sentences apply subtraction, 9 sentences apply transposition, 7 sentences apply omission, deletion or reduction, 17 sentences apply borrowing, 5 sentences apply cultural equivalence, 9 sentences apply descriptive equivalences, and 5 sentences apply modulation.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, English plays a key role in many areas, including economics, politics, culture, communication, and education. Therefore, in response to this, English is very important to be mastered in Indonesia. The ability to listen to dialogue is one of the important language skills to be mastered by students. The ability to listen to student dialogue in Indonesia is still relatively low. The purpose of this study was to know student’s ability on listening to dialogue at the first semester in Islamic University on Indragiri. The sample of this study semester 1 English Study program, it means there are 22 students in round 5 male and 17 female. Sampling was carried out using purpose sampling. This study used a qualitative descriptive. Based on the results of the study the mean score of 61.37 categorizes most students as "Average to Good". Notably, no students were classified as "Poor".  Despite general strengths in comprehension and recall, many students face difficulties in understanding implied meanings and interpreting speaker intent. These findings highlight the importance of implementing tailored teaching strategies and creating supportive learning environments to enhance students' listening skills and academic success.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study examines the effectiveness of using English songs to enhance vocabulary mastery among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Tembilahan Hulu. The research design involved two groups: the experimental group (class XI MIPA 2) and the control group (class XI MIPA 3), with 32 and 34 students respectively, totaling 66 students. The primary objective of the study was to identify significant differences in English vocabulary mastery between students taught using song media and those taught using conventional methods. Additionally, the study aimed to evaluate the overall effectiveness of using songs as a teaching medium for vocabulary enhancement. Data collection involved administering pre-tests and post-tests to both groups to measure vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment. The experimental group received instruction through English songs, while the control group continued with conventional teaching methods. The data were analyzed using SPSS 27 for Windows, focusing on hypothesis testing and discussions to draw meaningful conclusions. The results revealed a significant improvement in the vocabulary mastery of students in the experimental group compared to those in the control group. The average pre-test score for the experimental group was 22.50, which increased to 45.77 in the post- test, while the control group’s average score increased from 21.34 in the pre-test to 32.98 in the post-test. The statistical analysis showed a significance level of Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) 0.001, which is less than the threshold of 0.050, indicating a statistically significant difference. These findings suggest that the use of English songs as a teaching medium is more effective than conventional methods in enhancing vocabulary mastery among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1. Tembilahan Hulu. The study highlights the potential benefits of incorporating music into language instruction to create a more engaging and effective learning experience for students.

Abstract

Dalam era global, bahasa inggris merupakan bahasa pemersatu seluruh bangsa, selain digunakan sebagai bahasa komunikasi, kemampuan berbahasa inggris juga menjadi salah satu syarat untuk seseorang melanjutkan perkuliahan, ataupun mendapat pekerjaaan, oleh karena itu bahasa inggris sangatlah penting untuk dipelajari oleh mahasiswa. Di Universitas Islam Indragiri masih banyak mahasiswa yang memiliki bahasa inggris yang kurang baik, oleh karena itu salah satu cara meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa inggris mahasiswa di Unisi adalah melalui kegiatan English Club. Kegiatan PKM ini dilaksanakan oleh beberapa dosen dan satu mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Unisi. Tujuan dari kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM)  ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa inggris mahasiswa Unisi melalui English Club. Kegiatan PKM ini menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif, yanki perpaduan teori dan praktek di akhir pelatihan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa English Club dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa inggris mahasiswa baik dari bertambahnya kosakata, pengetahuan tata bahasa, dan kemampuan berbicara. Kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam English Club ialah menjelaskan materi, praktek, dan juga melaukan permainan bahasa Inggris adalah cara penting untuk meningkatkan motivasi mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa inggris. Melalui kegiatan PKM ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa English Club dapat dianggap sebagai kegiatan yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa inggris mahasiswa karena memberi mereka sarana untuk mengerjakan soal-soal berbahasa inggris dan melakukan praktek berbicara yang terorganisir dan menyenangkan.
