Abstract

This article discusses how the construction of children's identities in families with amalgamated marriages in the Malay and Javanese ethnic groups in Tanjung Uma Village, Batam City. This study is interesting because the Malay and Javanese ethnic groups are ethnic groups that have different cultural characteristics, so that adjustments are needed in the formation of cultural identities in family members. This study uses the Social Construction theory of Peter L. Berger. The research method used in this study is the historical method which goes through four stages, namely: data collection or heuristics, criticism, interpretation and writing. The data collection process is carried out first by heuristics, where researchers collect relevant historical sources by observing how families with amalgamated marriages of the Malay and Javanese ethnic groups live. The second stage is criticism, at this stage the researcher conducts criticism by assessing the authenticity of documents, the physical condition of the archives of amalgamated marriage data in Tanjung Uma Village. The third stage, the interpretation stage, researchers use a relevant theoretical framework on the formation of children's identities in amalgamated marriage families. The fourth stage of Historiography is presenting the results of the study through the stages of sources, data, and evidence, in this case the researcher took data from Tanjung Uma Village regarding the amalgamation marriage families of Malay and Javanese ethnicities. The research findings show that there are three main factors in the formation of the cultural identity of children from amalgamation marriage families of Malay and Javanese ethnicities in Tanjung Uma Village. First, the locality factor where the dominant Malay culture in Tanjung Uma greatly influences the cultural identity of children. Second, the role of parents in internalizing cultural values to their children. Parents act as the main socialization agents who introduce and teach both cultures. Third, cultural adjustment in amalgamation marriage families of Malay and Javanese ethnicities in Tanjung Uma Village shows a process of adjustment, especially the dominant Malay culture as the local culture.

Abstract

This article discusses how the reproduction of cultural identity in amalgamated families among Malay and Javanese in Tanjung Uma Village, Lubuk Baja District, Batam, Indonesia. The Malay and Javanese are ethnic groups that have different cultural characteristics, so various forms of negotiation are needed in the formation of cultural identity among family members. This is qualitative research with case study method, using observation and in-depth interviews with 15 informants. We use theory of location of culture by Homi K Bhabha and Stuart Hall's cultural identity to explain that cultural identity is not something rigid and standard but can be produced and reproduced. The research show that in amalgamated families of Malay and Javanese, there is a negotiation of cultural identity, making an impact on the formation of a hybrid identity in which the various elements of the two cultures adapt to each other. Hybrid identity is a form of cultural identity reproduction, the result of negotiations between the innate cultures of the two parents, as well as the dominant culture prevailing in the location where the family internalizes itself. This cultural negotiation is also the reason for the survival of Malay and Javanese amalgamated families, in the midst of high divorce rates among other ethnic amalgamation marriage in Tanjung Uma.

Abstract

Nagari Ketaping, located in Batang Anai District, West Sumatra, has undergone significant land use changes, primarily due to the establishment of Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) in 2005. Initially a swamp and forest area, this region has transformed into a rapidly developing urban area, triggering various socio-economic and cultural shifts. This study aims to analyze the impact of these changes on the local community, including population growth, livelihood transitions, educational access, and social interactions. A qualitative research approach with a descriptive method was employed. Data collection techniques included interviews and observations, involving five key informants: local government representatives, affected residents, and workers. Observations were conducted to examine land use transformation, including the construction of infrastructure such as housing complexes, overpasses, highways, and airport railway connections. The findings reveal that the airport's presence has significantly increased the population due to urbanization and migration. New housing developments have proliferated, attracting settlers from various regions. Economic shifts are evident, with residents transitioning from agricultural livelihoods to employment in trade, construction, and service industries. Additionally, the expansion of educational facilities has improved access to schooling, supporting human resource development. Changes in social interaction patterns are also observed, as denser settlements foster stronger community bonds and reduce crime rates. The study applies Herbert Spencer's evolutionary theory, which posits that societal transformations occur gradually. The development of BIM has triggered continuous infrastructure expansion, leading to sustained regional and socio-economic growth. However, discrepancies remain in employment opportunities for indigenous residents despite prior agreements. The findings highlight the profound influence of large-scale infrastructure projects on local communities, emphasizing the need for inclusive and sustainable development policies.

Abstract

This research explains the philosophy of "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" in Social Studies learning as a learning resource within the context of Minangkabau society. Through a literature study method, this research explores the concepts, history, and practical implications of this philosophy in Social Studies education. The discussion encompasses the philosophical concepts of this philosophy that emphasize harmony between customs and religion, as well as its important role in student character formation. The results of the literature study indicate that integrating this philosophy into Social Studies education requires the development of a balanced curriculum between theoretical aspects and local cultural values. Teachers also need to be trained to integrate cultural and religious values into daily learning, while evaluation and assessment must also reflect students' understanding of these values. Furthermore, the discussion regarding the impact of integrating this philosophy on student character formation highlights the importance of learning that emphasizes attitudes of tolerance, justice, responsibility, and leadership. Thus, through a holistic approach to integrating the philosophy of "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" in Social Studies learning, it is hoped that students can develop strong character and bring positive impact to Minangkabau society and society in general.
