Abstract

Abstract

This community service program introduced Canva, a graphic design platform, to elementary school students as part of the University of Al-Azhar Indonesia’s Gerakan Nasional Revolusi Mental, under the theme of “Digital Literacy and Ethics”. The program was carried out at Al-Fityan School Tangerang on August 21, 2023. Students, in 4th grade, were trained to create a poster using Canva. They were asked to choose one of their five favorite things: mom, dad, hobby, food, or animal. The results showed that the popular choice was between “hobby” and “animal” while the least popular was “dad”. All 28 students produced their own posters and even six of them produced two posters. In this regard, the training of Canva seemed to be effective. There should be a continuation of training using the similar theme to Al-Fityan students for the future program given students’ progress and enthusiasm. Keywords – Canva, Gerakan Nasional Revolusi Mental, Poster Creation, Fourth Graders, Digital Literacy

Abstract

The activities of the National Movement for Mental Revolution (GNRM) are located at Al Fityan School Tangerang. These activities aim to introduce teaching and learning by using CLT or the Communicative Language Teaching method through mini-games. The main problem is that elementary students require more fun in teaching due to their changing moods and mental states to absorb experiences and knowledge. We handled the 4th-grade elementary school students, all of them were boys. The teaching was focused on various topics, however, this paper was focused on “like and dislike”, knowing that children tend to express their moods and feelings. This activity was based on 28 samples based on questionnaires collected from students. The findings show that students were able to express themselves when mentioning two things (what do they like and what don’t they like) with proper vocabulary and grammarKeywords: Elementary School, Qualitative, CLT, Like, and Dislike

Abstract

Backronyms play an important role in branding by creating taglines that strengthen brand identity and build emotional connections, supporting effective marketing strategies. For universities as socialpreneurship or edupreneurship entities, the use of backronyms can enhance visibility and attract prospective students, helping to achieve long-term goals. This study analyzes the backronyms "SMILE" and "UNGGUL" from University Al-Azhar of Indonesia to evaluate their structural and semantic coherence. Using a qualitative approach, it was found that the "SMILE" backronym exhibits inconsistency between adjectival and nominal word classes, which disrupts both cohesion and overall meaning. Meanwhile, the "UNGGUL" backronym presents a more complex misalignment, involving verbs, nouns, and adjectives, leading to morphological and semantic discord as well as logical flaws. The conclusion of this study is that the inconsistency in word class usage and the illogical semantic connections diminish the communicative effectiveness of the backronyms, suggesting the need for improvements in backronym construction to enhance clarity and appeal in the university's branding strategy. Keywords - Backronym, Morphological Analysis, Semantic Consistency, Tagline.
