Abstract

Background: The prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls in the world is 29.60%, and in Indonesia is 32%. A number of primary studies reveal various determinants that contribute to the occurrence of anemia in adolescent girls. Purpose: To analyze the results of primary studies related to consumption patterns (food diversity and tea/coffee consumption) and the occurrence of anemia in adolescent girls. Methods: The research design was a systematic review with meta-analysis. Journal sources from three databases (Google Scholar, Pubmed, and Scopus) using Publish or Perish software with keywords using boolean operators and featured with PRISMA. Inclusion criteria were full text from 2013 to 2022, articles in Indonesian or English language, cross-sectional studies, and the population was adolescent girls, using multiple logistic regression analysis with adjusted odds ratio. The study obtained nine articles from 11,421 articles identified. Data analysis using Rev.Man 5.4. Results: The prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls was 30.83% (95% CI: 15.71-45.95). Food diversity (SMD=1.87; 95% CI=0.88-3.97; P-value=0.10) and tea or coffee consumption (SMD=2.46; 95% CI=1.15-5.27; P-value=0.02) influence the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls. Conclusion: Low food diversity and tea or coffee consumption increase the risk of anemia in adolescent girls. Implementing balanced nutritional guidelines to prevent anemia is recommended.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls is high globally and in Indonesia. Various factors, including low-level knowledge, play a role in the onset of anemia in adolescents. The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of studies on anemia knowledge in adolescent girls to obtain a combined effect. Method: This systematic review included a meta-analysis. The journal sources were Google Scholar, Pub-med, and Scopus, and the search was performed using Publish or Perish Software, applying keywords using Boolean operators. The inclusion criteria were Indonesian or English language articles, full text from 2013 to 2022, cross-sectional studies, adolescent female populations, and multiple logistic regression analyses with adjusted odds ratio measures. A total of 10,499 articles were identified, of which 6 articles met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis using RevMan 5.4. Results: The prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls was 40.2% (95% CI: 12.98-67.68). Meta-analysis showed that knowledge about anemia had an influence on the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls (SMD=3.06; CI 95%=2.23-4.19; P-value=<0.001). The fixed-effect model was used. The funnel plot indicates that there was no publication bias in this study. Conclusion: Poor knowledge increases the risk of developing anemia in adolescents. It is recommended to increase literacy through social media related to anemia in adolescent girls and to activate adolescent health programs in schools.

Abstract

Anemia has a negative impact on physical function, especially reproductive organ function in adolescent girls. The prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls globally is still high at 29.6%, including in Indonesia at 32%. This study aims to analyze findings from studies related to the prevalence of anemia and consumption of iron supplements and the duration of menstruation in adolescent girls. The research design uses a systematic review with meta-analysis of articles that sourced from three databases, namely Google Scholar, Pubmed, and Scopus. Search for articles using Publish or Perish software, and selected according to inclusion criteria, namely Indonesian or English language, full-text from 2013 to 2022, cross-sectional study design with the adjusted odds ratio measure. The data analysis using RevMan 5.4. Total of 10 articles met the inclusion criteria from 11,425 articles identified. The average prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls was 34.55% (CI 95%: 19.49-49.60). The results of the meta-analysis showed that iron supplement consumption (aOR= 6.17; 95% CI= 1.66-22.93; P-value 0.01) and menstrual duration (aOR= 5.97; 95% CI= 3.60-27.66; P- value= 0.04) influences the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls. It is recommended that young women always consume iron supplements according to government programs, especially during menstruation.
