Abstract

This study investigates the educational experiences of twelve jailed students in prison in Namibia, with a specific emphasis on identifying the factors necessary for their academic achievement. The study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the jailed students' perspectives on the impact of education, utilizing audio-recorded interviews. The interviews were meticulously transcribed verbatim by an English-speaking transcriber to ensure the utmost accuracy and thoroughness in documenting the participants' narratives. The author employed an interpretive paradigm to analyze and delve into the subjective meanings and experiences of the pupils. This methodology enabled a comprehensive understanding of the influence of educational programs on the lives of jailed inmates, potentially aiding in their rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society. The findings offer unique insights into the significant influence that education may have in correctional settings, revealing the challenges and accomplishments encountered by incarcerated students. This study contributes to the broader discourse on education in prisons by focusing on the real-life experiences of prisoners. It highlights the need to provide jailed individuals educational opportunities to facilitate their personal and professional development. This study emphasizes the significance of tailored educational interventions in prisons to foster advantageous outcomes for incarcerated persons and society.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges faced by incarcerated students in their interactions with study supervisors within prison education programs in Namibia. Using a qualitative design and an interpretive paradigm, semi-structured interviews with 12 male participants were analyzed thematically to uncover key barriers in the student-supervisor dynamic. Findings highlight systemic issues, including limited technological access, communication barriers, and insufficient supervisory support, which hinder effective learning and engagement. Participants emphasized the psychological impact of delayed feedback, restricted access to study materials, and a lack of supervisor understanding of educational needs. These insights underscore the need for enhanced training for supervisors, improved communication infrastructure, and equitable access to digital resources to create supportive learning environments in correctional facilities. By addressing these barriers, the study contributes to improving educational outcomes and supports broader rehabilitative efforts for incarcerated learners.

Abstract

Health adversity, whether due to chronic illness, disability, or severe medical conditions, often leads to emotional, social, and psychological challenges. While much research has focused on clinical care, growing attention is paid to peer support and friendship as crucial non-clinical resources. The experience of Sisi, a person living through health adversity, offers an illustrative case of how love and social connection can play a transformative role in coping and resilience, even if it is for a short while. This paper explores the importance of peer support and friendship in enhancing empowerment, maintaining personal identity, and encouraging meaning-making during health-related adversity. It seeks to contribute knowledge on how social relationships function as sources of emotional comfort and as mechanisms that enable individuals to reframe their experience and maintain a strong sense of self in times of illness. The narratives show that peer support and friendship are essential facilitators of psychological empowerment, assisting individuals in feeling more in control and competent even in the face of adversity. Relationships with peers protect identity by affirming personal narratives beyond the illness. Furthermore, they act as informal support systems that augment medical interventions, frequently improving quality of life and psychological resilience. Peer connection can assist individuals in viewing illness not merely as a medical experience but as a collective human experience characterized by connection and meaning. The insights underscore the necessity for more comprehensive, person-centered strategies in health care that acknowledge love, friendship, and social connection as vital elements of recovery and resilience.

Abstract

The case study aimed to investigate the experiences of incarcerated students engaged in distance learning and the university's support efforts. Its objective was to guide future research and initiatives for better supporting this student group. The central inquiry was focused on understanding the challenges and benefits faced by incarcerated students participating in distance education. Through qualitative methods, data were gathered via in-depth interviews with 12 incarcerated students enrolled in a Namibian correctional facility's distance education program. The findings highlighted key themes such as the flexibility and independence provided by distance learning, enabling students to manage academic commitments alongside prison duties. Challenges noted included limited access to technology, internet disruptions, and difficulties in accessing learning materials. Furthermore, participants emphasized how distance education positively influenced their personal growth, skills development, and prospects for reintegrating into society post-incarceration. The study underscores the necessity of customizing distance education initiatives to meet the unique needs and constraints of incarcerated individuals, acknowledging the transformative potential of education within the prison environment.

The purpose of this article is to provide schools with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage sustained crises in schools. The role of heads of department (HODs) in administering schools during times of crisis is covered in this article. The Covid-19 crisis has brought to light a new chance to explore the role of HODs, the stakeholders they represent, and how they could progress toward a larger understanding and better response to critical school concerns. As a result, the author's goal in this article is to find out "How should HODs exercise their powers in crisis management?" The author emphasizes the significance of flexibility and organizational creativity in times of crisis based on this investigation. The author also discusses how HODs can bridge the gap between school administrators and teachers, school crisis management and resolution, knowledge of technology information, and communication, virtual learning, communication, crisis management strategies, and how principals can support HODs when the next crisis is right around the corner.
