Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension and diabetes, are the leading causes of death among the elderly in Indonesia. To address this issue, a community service program was conducted in the working area of the Ariodilla Health Center, Palembang, focusing on NCD screening and health education through senior exercise. The program was attended by 45 elderly individuals who underwent health screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and uric acid measurements. The results showed that 15.5% of the elderly were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, 75.8% had high cholesterol, and 24.4% had elevated uric acid levels. In addition, senior exercise sessions were conducted to improve physical fitness. This program successfully increased the knowledge and awareness of the elderly regarding NCDs, the importance of regular health check-ups, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In the future, similar programs are expected to be expanded to reach more elderly individuals, aiming to prevent serious complications from NCDs.

Abstract

Hypertension is a common non-communicable disease with a high prevalence and a significant risk of severe complications if not detected and managed early. In Dusun 02, Tanjung Baru Village, under the jurisdiction of the Tanjung Baru Health Center in Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, many residents are unaware of their blood pressure status and lack knowledge about risk factors and prevention. This community service activity aimed to increase public awareness through health education and conduct blood pressure screening for early detection of hypertension. The methods included educational sessions on hypertension, healthy lifestyle promotion, and on-site blood pressure checks for targeted residents. The results demonstrated an increase in participants’ understanding of hypertension and identified several individuals with elevated blood pressure who had not been previously diagnosed. In conclusion, educational intervention combined with direct screening is an effective approach to raise awareness and enable early detection of hypertension in rural communities.

Abstract

Smoking behavior among adolescents is a serious public health concern and contributes to an increased risk of degenerative diseases. Health education using educational media is considered effective in enhancing knowledge and modifying adolescent behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of health education through animated video and leaflet media on junior high school students’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the dangers of smoking. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted with 100 randomly selected junior high school students in Palembang City. The intervention included educational animated videos and distribution of leaflets. Pretest and posttest measurements were conducted using structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. There were significant increases in the mean scores of knowledge (from 6.34 to 9.20), attitudes (from 40.24 to 45.66), and practices (from 20.80 to 23.82), with p=0.000 for all variables. Health education using animated videos and leaflets is effective in improving student knowledge and shaping positive behavior in smoking prevention. This approach is recommended as part of school-based health promotion strategies.
