Abstract

Semiotics is defined as using signs to represent mathematical concepts in problem-solving. The mathematical semiotic process involves creating meaning from the triadic relationship between the representamen (R), object (O), and interpretant (I). Mathematical semiotics play an essential role in the cognitive processes of individuals as they formulate and communicate mathematical ideas. Therefore, this study aims to describe the stages of the semiotic process of junior high school students solving integers-related mathematical problems. In this qualitative analysis, the participant is a seventh-grade student categorized as pseudo-semiotic. The research instrument is a test on integers and interviews. The results demonstrate that the semiosis related to integers involves the representamen, object, and interpretant stages. For a subject with a pseudo-semiotic type, this meaning-making process requires the construction of a comprehensive understanding of the concept. Furthermore, the understanding is developed using various instruments, resulting in connection conflicts between different components of the semiotic system. Connection conflict occurs because of the mismatched relationship between the elements of semiosis: representamen, object, and interpretant. A pseudo-semiotic subject only has a superficial understanding of mathematical concepts, making it challenging to establish accurate connections between symbols and their underlying meanings. Consequently, this hinders the ability to understand mathematics profoundly and apply the concepts in real-life situations.

Abstract

Abstrak Permasalahan sampah plastik di lingkungan sekolah memerlukan pendekatan edukatif yang tidak hanya membangun kepedulian lingkungan, tetapi juga mengembangkan literasi finansial sejak usia dini. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan memberikan pemahaman awal mengenai pengelolaan dan nilai ekonomi sampah plastik, mengenalkan konsep tabungan berbasis sampah, serta memperoleh gambaran mengenai respons siswa terhadap Gerakan Sekolah Hijau Cerdas Finansial berbasis ATM EcoSmart Kidz. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di SD Negeri Utama 6 Cimahi melalui tahapan koordinasi dan identifikasi kebutuhan mitra, persiapan, sosialisasi, evaluasi awal dan penyusunan rencana tindak lanjut. Sosialisasi diikuti oleh sekitar 120 siswa kelas I–V melalui pemaparan interaktif, video edukatif, permainan, tanya jawab, dan simulasi konseptual. Evaluasi dilakukan setelah kegiatan terhadap 15 siswa kelas III–V menggunakan angket yang terdiri atas 12 pernyataan tertutup dan dua pertanyaan terbuka. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa 98,89% dari keseluruhan respons berada pada pilihan “Ya”, 1,11% pada pilihan “Ragu-ragu”, dan tidak terdapat respons “Tidak”. Jawaban terbuka menunjukkan bahwa siswa mampu mengungkapkan kembali pesan mengenai pemilahan dan pemanfaatan sampah, tabungan berbasis sampah, serta rencana tindakan untuk menjaga lingkungan, membangun kebiasaan menabung, dan melibatkan teman maupun keluarga. Kegiatan ini menghasilkan penerimaan awal yang positif dan menjadi dasar pengembangan serta implementasi ATM EcoSmart Kidz secara berkelanjutan. Evaluasi lanjutan diperlukan untuk mengukur perubahan pengetahuan, kebiasaan pengelolaan sampah, dan perkembangan literasi finansial setelah media diimplementasikan. Kata kunci: ATM EcoSmart Kidz; literasi finansial; pendidikan lingkungan; sampah plastik; sekolah dasar. Abstract Plastic waste problems in school environments require an educational approach that not only fosters environmental awareness but also develops financial literacy from an early age. This community service program aimed to provide students with an initial understanding of plastic waste management and its economic value, introduce the concept of waste-based savings, and describe students’ responses to the ATM EcoSmart Kidz-based Green and Financially Smart School Movement. The program was conducted at SD Negeri Utama 6 Cimahi through four stages: coordination and identification of partner needs, preparation, socialization, and initial evaluation and follow-up planning. Approximately 120 students in Grades I–V participated in interactive presentations, educational videos, games, question-and-answer activities, and conceptual simulations. Following the activity, 15 students in Grades III–V completed an evaluation questionnaire consisting of 12 closed-ended statements and two open-ended questions. The data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods. The results showed that 98.89% of all responses were “Yes,” 1.11% were “Undecided,” and no “No” responses were recorded. The open-ended responses indicated that students were able to restate key messages related to waste sorting and utilization, waste-based savings, and intended actions to protect the environment, develop saving habits, and involve friends and family. The activity generated positive initial acceptance and provided a foundation for the further development and sustainable implementation of ATM EcoSmart Kidz. Further evaluation is required to examine changes in students’ knowledge, waste-management practices, and financial literacy after the media is implemented. Keywords: ATM EcoSmart Kidz; elementary school; environmental education; financial literacy; plastic waste.
