Abstract

Literacy and numeracy are the abilities of students to use basic mathematics in solving daily life problems, and students should have it. Various studies have shown that Indonesian students' literacy and numeracy skills still need to improve. One of the solutions to this problem is RME, and one of the components that influence this skill is teachers as a facilitator and their experiences. Thus, this research aims to refigure how students who receive Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) literacy and numeracy skills improve based on teacher's experiences. The research subjects are third, fourth, and fifth-grade students in elementary schools in Padang. Three schools were selected for each grade level and taught by three teachers with different experiences. The students were given literacy and numeracy problems before and after RME instruction. The answers were assessed and grouped to examine the student's literacy and numeracy achievement. The research results show that student's literacy and numeracy skills are better with RME learning. Student's literacy and numeracy skills are not influenced by teachers' experience.

Abstract

The History of Mathematics Learning course is often taught theoretically and descriptively, thus not fully encouraging students to develop applicable academic skills, particularly in scientific writing and publication. In fact, scientific journal publication is an important indicator in strengthening students' academic literacy. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a project-based learning program for scientific journal writing and presentation in improving students' academic competencies. The method used is a qualitative approach with a program evaluation design based on the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, and Product) model. The study subjects comprised 57 students in the Mathematics Education Study Program who were taking the History of Mathematics Learning course. The instruments used consisted of interview guidelines, observation sheets, and documentation of student articles. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively through thematic analysis and document analysis techniques. The results show that this program is relevant to students' academic needs, supported by good resource readiness, and implemented systematically through a cycle of presentations and revisions that build a scientific culture. The scientific articles produced by students showed a significant quality improvement, with the majority successfully submitted to SINTA-indexed national journals. These findings suggest that integrating scientific journal writing into mathematics history courses not only enhances students’ critical thinking and academic literacy but also helps prepare future educators for scholarly publication, highlighting broader implications for mathematics education.

Abstract

Maclaurin was a Scottish-born physicist and mathematician who was a direct descendant of the noble Stewart family through his mother. His contributions in the field of mathematics are still relevant to modern scholarship in this century and continue to be used as a basis for the development of other sciences. One of his famous contributions to mathematics is the Maclaurin series. The author is interested in explaining Maclaurin's figure and analyzing the level of knowledge and interest of junior high school students regarding Colin Maclaurin and his contributions. The research used is qualitative research with a case study method. The research subjects were ten middle school students who were chosen randomly. The instrument used in this research was an open interview. Each student was asked five questions related to their knowledge of Maclaurin and his contributions. The analysis of this research data is thematic. The results of this research obtained four levels of knowledge and interest of junior high school students regarding Colin Maclaurin and his contributions. An explanation of the four levels of knowledge and interest will be explained in detail in this article.

Abstract

This Hindu mathematics is one of the most significant contributions of Indian civilization to the development of world science. The Hindu numeration system is the most prominent contribution in the history of mathematics The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the understanding of prospective Mathematics teachers regarding the mathematical history of the development of Hindu (Indian) Mathematics. The population of this study is Mathematics Education students of 2021, 2022 and 2023 who have taken history of mathematics courses. Through explorative analysis, this study shows their level of understanding of the History and numeration system of Hindu mathematics. This research adopts a qualitative research type with literature review and case study methods, while the instrument used is an open-ended interview to evaluate students' understanding. The data analysis in this study is thematic analysis. The results show varying levels of understanding, with some students having in-depth knowledge of the development of Hindu (Indian) mathematics, while others need improved understanding. The implication of this result is the need for a more in-depth and focused learning approach on the historical aspects of Hindu mathematics.

Abstract

Bonaventura Francesco Cavalieri was an Italian scientist famous for his Cavalieri principle. By focusing on the history, ideas, and practices of Cavalieri, this study aims to improve junior high school students' understanding of his principles. The research method used is qualitative, and data was collected through case studies, meta-analyses, and literature reviews. Various literature sources, such as textbooks, journal articles, and historical documentation related to Cavalieri's principles, were analysed to gain an understanding of how these principles can be applied in student learning. The research methods used were open-ended interviews about Cavalieri's history and an analysis of related literature. The results of the study show the level of students' understanding of Cavalieri's principles. They also inform us about the history, ideas, and some applications of these ideas.
