Abstract

Abstract Strengthening governmental system has been the subject of public and scholarly discussion in Indonesia since a multiparty presidential system has been adopted in this country since 2004. There is a widely spread assumption that the implementation of concurrent election (legislative and presidential) is one of the main ways to do so because it will simplify the number of political parties in the legislature which will help the president (the executive) to govern more effectively. Is this assumption right? What do the theories and empirical evidence say about it? Using comparative politics perspective and analysis, this article argues that the implementation of concurrent election is not a necessary and sufficient condition for the strengthening of Indonesia’s multiparty presidential system. There are many variables that need to be combined with it. The electoral systems of plurality and majority run-off, for example, will have different impact to presidential system when combined with concurrent election.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine and understand the form of factionalisation and Internal Conflict of Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP) in people's perception of its existence as a political party. The method uses a qualitative approach with data and information obtained through interviews and library research methods. The data and arguments built in this paper use qualitative studies, namely by gathering various scientific references and from primary and secondary sources through searching for writings related to books, journals, papers, newspapers, magazines and direct interview results with informants related to problem in this study. The results showed that the internal PPP conflict was caused by differences in the views of political elite in determining the coalition carrying the presidential candidates. This happened in the PPP in 2014 when there were differences in the nominations between Suryadharma Ali and Romahurmuziy. The conflict then led to the dualism of the leadership of the Suryadharma Ali and Romahurmuziy camps. Another factor driving conflict is the different backgrounds of cadres in the political parties. Therefore, conflict management absolutely needs a political party.

Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the views of Muslim elites regarding religious and socio-political issues as a means of explaining moderate Islam in Indonesia. Specifically, its aim is to shed light on this matter by mapping the ideological spectrum of Muslim elites’ perspectives on significant religious and political issues. A solid understanding of the socio-political context and the viewpoints of the elite is a crucial step towards comprehending the development of religious and political attitudes among the general population and the resulting impact on the social and political progress of the country. Based on fieldwork, this article argues that the majority of Muslim elites lean towards a moderate stance when it comes to perceiving ideological matters. Nevertheless, some still exhibit a tendency towards conservatism. It is important to note that this study is limited in its geographical scope. Consequently, further research should encompass various regions of Indonesia to provide a more comprehensive and holistic perspective.

Abstract

This research delves into the changing patterns of identity and anarchy culture experienced by the United States in the chronology of the space race with China from 2011 to 2021. Utilizing Alexander Wendt’s constructivist theory, this study explores the transformation in US space policy as a response to China’s growing presence in space exploration. The qualitative methodology employed involves thematic analysis of secondary data sources, including congressional minutes, official statements, media coverage, and public speeches. The findings reveal a dynamic shift in the US’s identity, influenced by its interactions on the international stage. During the Cold War, the US’s identity, shaped by a Hobbesian culture of anarchy, was marked by rivalry with the Soviet Union. Post-Cold War, the focus shifted to demonstrating leadership through international cooperation, reflecting a Kantian logic. However, with the emergence of China as a formidable competitor, the US identity has once again transformed, now characterized by a Lockean culture of competition rather than direct conflict. This shift has led to significant policy reformulations, including strategic partnerships and renewed emphasis on self-reliance in space missions, such as the Artemis program and collaboration with private sector companies like SpaceX. These results highlight the intricate relationship between national identity, perceived threats, and policy responses, underscoring the fluid nature of US space policy in the context of global space contestation.

Abstract

Identity politics was significant in 2019 Indonesian general elections. The result of the election however, seems to show that identity was only significant in presidential but not in legislative election. Given that the legislative and presidential elections are conducted concurrently, it is logical to assume that what is significant in the presidential election will also be significant for the legislative election. This paper tries to briefly answer several questions. Is identity politics really rising? Why does it seem to be significant only in the presidential and not the legislative election? If identity politics in the presidential election is important, assuming that the incumbent is mostly the target of that politics, why did the incumbent still win? What are the implications of this for Indonesian democracy? Data of the study were taken from the Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) and the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) surveys and exit poll. Theoretical guidance for the discussion will be mainly based on the voting behavior and identity politics literature. The study indicates that identity politics was rising and significantly in play during this election, including by using fake news. However, the impact of identity politics is limited by the fundamental factors (such as public evaluation on the incumbent), making it fail to be a deciding factor in presidential election. Importantly, the multipolar nature of competition in legislative election made identity politics difficult to exert decisive effect.

Abstract

This study examines the Religion Twenty (R21) Forum in Indonesia as a case of interfaith dialogue for peacebuilding. Interfaith dialogue represents a facet of religious inclusion in international relations that has historically been ignored due to the preponderance of secular foundations in realist traditions. Since 11 September 2001, interfaith dialogue has increasingly served as a framework for addressing global religious challenges, including in Indonesia. This study is concerned with exploring the narrative of R20 regarding the emergence, initiation, activities, continuation and criticism of the R20 Forum. The study adopts a qualitative approach. The main question guiding the study is whether the R20 is succeeding in its peacebuilding mission. To solve this puzzle, the study uses the paradigm of interfaith dialogue for change as an analytical framework. This paper argues that the R20 has succeeded in bringing the paradigm of interfaith dialogue for peacebuilding to the fore. However, the continuation of R20 in the future is still in doubt. However, it offers a broader understanding of interfaith dialogue for peacebuilding in Indonesia, enriching knowledge that can inform public policy improvements within the country and serve as a reference for the advancement of interfaith dialogue globally.

Abstract

This paper investigates politics interfaith diplomacy in Indonesia. Indeed, interfaith diplomacy is part of the inclusion of religion in international relations that has been neglected because of the dominance of the secularity foundation in the realism tradition. After 11 September 2021, interfaith dialogue, is widely used as a framework in solving global religious problems, including in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, this research answered the question of why the interfaith diplomacy of the World Peace Forum (WPF) emerges, continues, and becomes successful in maintaining its continuity. In addition, aspects of the socio-political context of interfaith diplomacy were studied. To better understand the puzzle, this working paper employed the concept of New Public Diplomacy in analyzing the topic. The paper contends that interfaith diplomacy emerged in Indonesia because of global conditions that were being hit by global conflict and war as well as clashes between civilizations so that religious organizations and religious leaders such as Muhammadiyah took part in playing the role of inter-religious diplomacy through WPF.
