Abstract

This research aims to enhance students' critical reading abilities by incorporating a metaphorming method based on local wisdom and utilizing flip applications in a Reading Skills course. The study employed a classroom action research approach, conducted over two cycles. Each cycle included four phases: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection methods included observations, tests, and questionnaires, which were analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative descriptive techniques. The findings revealed that integrating local wisdom-based metaphorming, specifically using Gorontalo folklore as teaching material, effectively improved students' critical reading skills. Additionally, the flip application served as an interactive learning medium, significantly boosting student engagement during the learning process. Student performance showed notable progress, with the percentage of those achieving the minimum passing grade increasing from 21.62% in the first cycle to 81.08% in the second cycle. This method demonstrated its effectiveness in enhancing both critical reading skills and students' motivation. The study recommends adopting similar approaches in other courses to foster students' critical thinking and creativity

Abstract

Poetry is the art or work of the poet. The combination of experiences, poet's feelings, emotions, and thoughts is needed to create a good work. The language of poetry is different from the use of language in general. However, it must have an aesthetic value. The language of poetry comes from poetic elements. Therefore, researchers are interested in studying Rifatterre's theory of structuralism-semiotics using descriptive research methods using an objective approach that focuses on the intrinsic elements of poetry and Rifatterre's theory of structuralism-semiotics. The conclusion in this study is that there are intrinsic elements such as diction, figurative language, rhythm, rhyme, images and themes. Likewise, in the theory of structuralism-semiotics, the researcher finds out how the use of indirect expressions, heuristic readings and hermeneutics are needed to understand the meanings and signs in poetry

Abstract

This study examines the impact of Project-Based Learning (PBL) on enhancing speaking skills among Paket C students at Pusat Kegiatan Belajar Masyarakat (PKBM) Husnan Limboto, a non-formal educational institution in Indonesia. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, integrating both qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing speaking skills in non-formal education settings. This approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of the phenomena by combining numerical data with contextual insights, the study developed and evaluated PBL materials aimed at improving fluency, coherence, and pronunciation. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative assessments with qualitative feedback from students and teachers. The results showed significant improvements in students' speaking proficiency, with fluency increasing from a mean score of 3.2 to 4.5 (a 40.6% improvement), coherence rising from 3.0 to 4.3 (43.3% increase), and pronunciation improving from 2.8 to 4.1 (46.4% increase). Student motivation and engagement also saw considerable gains, with motivation scores increasing from 3.1 to 4.6 (48.4%) and engagement from 3.0 to 4.7 (56.7%). These improvements underscore the effectiveness of PBL in fostering speaking skills in a non-formal education setting. However, the study also highlights challenges such as insufficient technological resources and the need for professional development for teachers to fully implement PBL. Recommendations include addressing infrastructure issues, providing more training for educators, and developing cost-effective PBL models for resource-limited environments. Future research should explore the long-term impact of PBL on students' academic and professional success.
