Abstract

This paper attempts to discover the characteristics of the human being through William Blake's Poems as an alternative definition. Among Blake's poems, The Divine Image and The Human Abstract are the most representative of discovering human characteristics. Moreover, this study strives to establish the correlation between Islamic values and European literature. The study uses new criticism in discovering the characteristics in the poems by two steps of analysis; paraphrasing and explication. After conducting the analysis, it is found that there are four positive characteristics in The Divine Image and four negative characteristics in The Human Abstract. The positive characteristics consist of mercy, pity, peace, and love, while the negative ones are exploitation, cruelty, conflict, and hypocritical humility. An Islamic expert, Murtadha Muthahhari, perceives the result of the analysis of the poem. Muthahhari explains fourteen positive and eight negative points of humans following the Holy Qur'an. It is found that the poems' human positive and negative characteristics include in MurtadhaMuthahhari's points of thought. Thus, the ideas of human being’s characteristics in the poems are related to Murtadha Muthahhari’s thoughts.

Abstract

PurposeThis paper aimed at exploring the existence of the integration of personal moral values within the process of the teaching of literature in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting in an Islamic University in Indonesia.MethodAs a part of the personal literary competence being performed in approaching literary texts, in this case study, literature instructors in EFL setting were seen as approaching the teaching of the English Literary texts through the framework of Borsheim-Black’s Critical Literature Pedagogy. It was a pedagogical framework for merging goals of critical literacy and canonical literature instruction consisting of two stances of reading literature: reading with the text and reading against the text.Results/FindingsIn this study, the stance of reading against the text became distinguishable since the findings showed that both literature instructors inadvertently articulated their personal moral values in approaching the teaching of English literary texts within the classroom although the objectives of the courses did not focus on teaching moral values.ConclusionThe study concluded that these instructors have a certain perception towards the integration of their personal moral values in the reading of literature and the teaching of literature in EFL setting. Hopefully, such assumption will be studied in further research.

Abstract

This study investigates the meaning of the symbols displayed in the iPhone 15 Pro "On with the Show" advertisement on YouTube released by electronics company Apple Inc. in 2023. Apple's iPhone is considered a highly anticipated flagship product and has a strong appeal among global consumers. The focus of this research is to analyze the ad using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which includes the concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory as the analytical framework. Data was collected through direct observation of the iPhone 15 Pro "On with the Show" advertising video as well as document analysis related to Apple Inc's marketing strategy. This method allowed the researcher to explore the symbols used in the ad and analyze the implied meaning from the perspective of semiotic theory. The analysis in this study identified several symbols that appear in the commercial, such as an angry white director with an ethnically diverse film crew, a car that explodes in a remote location, a woman driving with an alien creature, and the statement "There's no camera like Pro" with the Apple logo. Each symbol is analyzed to understand how they represent power, the challenges of action filmmaking, advanced technology, gender representation, and the image of quality associated with the iPhone 15 Pro. The findings from this study provide insights into how Apple constructs meaning and identity through its advertising, as well as how these symbols influence our perception and understanding of the product and popular culture more broadly.

Abstract

This study is carried out with the aim of finding out how the modern heroic story that occurs in Alex Irvine's Captain America The First Avenger is still related to the theory of heroism which is based on old community stories in the form of myths, legends and folklore. This research uses Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey theory or monomyth to analyze how the narrative in the novel follows the plot laid out in the hero's journey theory. This study takes the perspective of Steve Rogers as the main character who experienced many events according to the parts and stages mentioned in Joseph Campbell's theory. The data source in this study is Alex Irvine's literary work entitled Captain America The First Avenger, which is an adaptation of a film that was made into a novel and published in New York in 2014 by the publisher Little Brown. The data collection technique is carried out using a reading and note-taking technique that allows researchers to scan data in sources which are then classified according to what is required from the theory used. Analysis of this data shows that the narrative of the novel Captain America The First Avenger by Alex Irine follows all the stages in hero’s journey theory by Joseph Campbell.
