Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of writing and listening teaching methods at Singaraja Montessori School with a focus on their effectiveness in cultivating students' independence, character development, and adaptation to individual needs. The research used a qualitative descriptive observational method involving 20 students from grades 4 to 6, with data collected through structured observations and semi-structured interviews with teachers. The findings of the study emphasize the development of students' independence, where students engage in self-directed learning activities that enhance problem-solving abilities. In addition, character development is prioritized through collaborative projects that instill empathy and cooperation. Other findings spotlight the challenges in realizing Montessori principles due to limited resources for continuous teacher training. Holistically, this study concludes that the Montessori approach at Singaraja School shows hope in educating independent and socially responsible students. Hence, the research can contribute positively to enhance the teaching practices of Montessori teachers in various educational contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) in a sixth-grade classroom at a public primary school in Singaraja. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with teachers and students. The findings reveal that SRL strategies, including goal setting, self-monitoring, and self-reflection, empower students to become active participants in their education. Teachers played a vital role in fostering these practices through scaffolding and guidance, while group activities promoted collaboration and critical thinking. Independent material selection was observed to enhance engagement, critical thinking, and digital literacy, aligning with modern educational frameworks like Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar initiative. However, challenges such as varying levels of student readiness, limited research skills, and insufficient familiarity with digital tools were noted, highlighting the need for structured teacher support. The study emphasizes the importance of balancing independence and guidance to maximize SRL’s benefits, preparing students for lifelong learning and adaptability in dynamic educational contexts.

Abstract

Technology integration has become an important aspect of English language teaching, especially in private Islamic schools. Although novice teachers are familiar with technology, there is a gap between the potential of technology and its integration in achieving learning objectives and little intensity of previous studies discussing challenges faced by novice teachers’ technology integration in English language teaching in an Islamic private secondary school. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and identify challenges of technology integration by a novice teacher in grade 11 at an Islamic private secondary school in North Bali. It was a case study designed under a qualitative approach, combining semi-structured observations using the Triple-E framework rubric and structured interviews with a single novice teacher. The Triple-E framework showed a score of out 9 of 18 which means technology integration has a moderate level of effectiveness, showing a partial connection between learning objectives and technological tools. The semi-structured interview results exposed several challenges, including technological limitations, workload, school policies regarding mobile phone use, and low student participation. This study highlights the need for institutional support, strategic training, and more flexible policies to maximize the potential of technology in English language teaching. This study is expected to provide new insights into the effectiveness and challenges faced by novice teachers in integrating technology for English language teaching in an Islamic private school context.

Abstract

As an antagonist in C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, Queen Jadis is narratively required to be depicted as a negative character. This study aimed to analyze Queen Jadis’ negative traits and how they strengthened her role as an antagonist through textual analysis in Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive qualitative data analysis model. The study showed that Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless, arrogant, authoritarian, and cowardly, creating conflict and tension in the storyline. Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless and arrogant to those weaker than her. She destroyed the entire world of Charn by using the Deplorable Word for her desires. When brought to the human world, she showed a dominant trait and used her power to control others. Her cowardice was most strongly shown when she fled at the sign of defeat. While these results show that Queen Jadis’s characterizations made her a proper antagonist for the children-heroes in the novel, her failure in conquering the worlds beyond Charn and loss of magical power function as punishment for these negative traits, sending a moral message to avoid building evil characters for the readers.
