Abstract

Social Networking Services (SNS) has become part of English learning, providing educators and students with free service and wide usage applicable to synchronous and asynchronous instruction. This study intended to critically review previous studies on the use of Telegram as one of the SNS platforms for enhancing students' reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Following George’s (2008) Literature Reviews model, 20 manuscripts were reviewed. The selection was taken from reputable International Journals indexed by Scopus quartile 1, 2, and 3, published between 2016-2020. It was revealed that Telegram is argued to have positively affect the students' four language skills in learning English. Telegram is claimed to benefit the students in terms of vocabulary, reading comprehension, content, and organization in writing, grammar, language style, pronunciation, and listening comprehension. Experts highlighted the relaxed and informal nature of Telegram as SNS to be one of the main factors that contributed positively to students' reduced anxiety and raised motivation in learning. Reflecting on those positive effects of Telegram on students' scholastics progress, the present study implies that Telegram may be an alternative for online learning and extensive learning of English.

Abstract

Many experts argue that the digital divide has shifted from a gap in access to a gap in the skill to use information and communication technology (ICT). However, some people still have difficulties in getting access to ICT despite the advancement and increasing access and affordability of technology. Reflecting on this problem, this study aimed at finding out whether the digital divide between the lecturers and students of English as a Foreign Language existed and in what aspects the digital divide happened. This research was quantitative, with the data collected through an online survey involving 12 lecturers and 88 students in their third year. The findings revealed that both the gap in access and the gap in use existed between both groups. The result calls for the attention of the stakeholders and policymakers on the improvement of the quality of access to ICT as well as on the advancement in the use of technology, especially for the teachers so that they can keep up with the younger generation.

Abstract

Ideologies are contested through discourses; thus, textbooks can be a fertile ground for implanting the prevalence of women's marginalization in society, or they can also be used for deconstructing the ideology. The present study aims to provide a general map of how English as a foreign language reflects gendered stereotypes. The study was library research that used the results of previous studies to answer the research questions. Using George's method, the study chose thirty articles published in 2010 - 2021, then critically reviewed. The critical reading was continued with mapping the results of the studies, and their arguments on gender stereotypes included English as Foreign Language textbooks worldwide. The review revealed that there had been prevalent marginalization of women in English textbooks reflected through the depiction of women as less dominant, inferior than men, primarily domestic, generally weak, powerless, voiceless, and passive. Such male prevalence was also found in Indonesian EFL textbooks. Many previous studies admit that male prevalence and women marginalization in EFL textbooks reflect reality in society. Nevertheless, the present study takes the standpoint that calls for the utilization of textbooks to deconstruct gendered binary oppositions that marginalize women by deliberately designing textbooks that impart awareness about gender equity.

Abstract

The global Covid-19 pandemic affects all aspects of life, including students learning process. Teachers and students were instructed to "study from home" using the online learning mode. Many online learning platforms were used during this time, including Google Classroom. The present study aimed to reveal students' perceptions of the implementation of Google Classroom at the beginning of the pandemic. The study took place in one of the state vocational schools in Denpasar City, involving forty students in Grade IX. The data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. The study revealed that most students positively perceived the implementation of Google Classroom in their online learning, even though the sudden shift to online learning. However, students viewed the implementation of Google Classroom in online learning mode lacked interactions during the learning process, causing them to feel that they had no chance to confirm information or knowledge that they had learned. This finding implies that teachers must build interaction between teachers and students during the online learning process.

Abstract

AbstractAs young learners like to learn in a fun atmosphere with engaging interactions, the present study argues that when children learn English as a foreign language, implementing games in teaching English can benefit young learners. The research was conducted following the library research method, where the content of the research from previous studies on English for young learners and the benefits of using games in teaching English for young learners were collected with the keywords "young learners", "traditional games", and "online games." The sources were selected from articles published in reputable international and accredited national journals from 2010-2022. The result of this study shows that two types of games can be chosen such as traditional and online games. The implementation of each type of game in teaching has strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions to improve the quality to help young learners learn. Overall, young learners will get more positive impacts due to the implementation of both traditional and online games. They can be recommended as strategies to teach English to young learners. Abstract

Along with the growing awareness of gender equality, language learning should start working on issues of gender equality besides focusing on language acquisition. Using interactive qualitative methods from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana combined with Peirce's semiotics, this study aimed to examine the depiction of gender roles displayed in illustrations of English textbooks for eighth grade students. The results showed that there were attempts to deconstruct the gender roles of both men and women, although gender stereotypes remained common. The emerging stereotypes were depictions of men with darker skin colour and male characters doing outdoor activities. In addition, the proportion of female characters appeared less frequent than male characters. Meanwhile, the deconstruction raised was the role of boys in household activities such as cooking, sweeping, wrapping gifts, setting up dining table, and using clothes in pastels while the female characters were depicted in outdoor activities. However, the delivered deconstruction was subtle as identified in female characters engaged in outdoor activities tended to get safer settings than male characters. Considering that children’s perception on gender are affected by language, it is important for parties involved in language learning to be aware of things that may extend gender role disparities found in the widely accessed learning material such as textbooks and address these issues while conducting their language instruction.

Abstract

J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has presented readers with different unique teachers. Even though Rowling’s series disclose Professor Snape as a hero, the first novel depicted him as an insufferable character set to thwart the main characters’ adventure. This study aimed to provide more objective portrayals of Professor Snape through interactive qualitative data analysis. The subject of the study is J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Meanwhile, the characterizations of Professor Snape become the object of the study. As the main instrument of data collection, the researcher conducted close reading. The analysis consisted of a concurrent process of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, which are also synchronized with the data collected at the beginning of the research. This study reveals that Professor Snape was depicted as knowledgeable, curious, observant, hardworking, loner, partial, loyal, responsible, and authoritative. These results show that Professor Snape has good characters. However, they were overshadowed by his brooding appearance. This conclusion implies that students should not judge their teacher or others based on their appearance.

Abstract

As an antagonist in C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, Queen Jadis is narratively required to be depicted as a negative character. This study aimed to analyze Queen Jadis’ negative traits and how they strengthened her role as an antagonist through textual analysis in Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive qualitative data analysis model. The study showed that Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless, arrogant, authoritarian, and cowardly, creating conflict and tension in the storyline. Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless and arrogant to those weaker than her. She destroyed the entire world of Charn by using the Deplorable Word for her desires. When brought to the human world, she showed a dominant trait and used her power to control others. Her cowardice was most strongly shown when she fled at the sign of defeat. While these results show that Queen Jadis’s characterizations made her a proper antagonist for the children-heroes in the novel, her failure in conquering the worlds beyond Charn and loss of magical power function as punishment for these negative traits, sending a moral message to avoid building evil characters for the readers.

Abstract

Character education values are frequently presented in animated movies. While many values can be identified from one character in a movie, the present study highlights the five core values proposed by the Ministry of National Education in the characterization of Miguel Rivera from Disney’s Coco (2017). The present study employed textual analysis to identify the representation of character education values. Data analysis was conducted simultaneously with the data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The analysis revealed that Miguel Rivera’s characterizations reflect the traits of religiosity, nationalism, independence, integrity, and mutual cooperation. Because the movie is centered around the conflict of Miguel Rivera’s passion to sing and play Mexican guitar and set around the Mexican celebration of Day of the Dead, Miguel Rivera’s adherence to the ritual of the Dead, his pride in the Mexican music and food strongly reflects his religious and nationalist values. His struggle about lying to his family, Ernesto de la Cruz, and Enrique Rivera shows his integrity. Furthermore, his kindness in helping others and his handwork to achieve his goal presented his cooperative values. These findings imply that children’s movies could give examples of character values by presenting visual images of how the characters’ actions.

Abstract

An abstract should accompany each manuscript; it should be completely self-consistent (i.e., In children’s literature, protagonists are often highlighted as role models, while antagonists are frequently overlooked, despite their crucial role in creating conflict and shaping the plot. Thus, this study explores the characterization of the Lady of the Green Kirtle, the main antagonist in The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis. An interactive, qualitative method, as described by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, was employed in this research. As the main instrument, close reading of the novel was employed to identify and analyze specific subsequences containing the antagonist’s behaviors. The findings reveal that the Lady of the Green Kirtle is characterized by four main traits: manipulative, dominant, cruel, and dangerous. She employed her magic, lies, and violence to manipulate others and achieve her goals. Her presence greatly influences the direction of the plot and the challenges faced by the protagonists. This study demonstrates that examining antagonists can enhance our understanding of character roles in literature, particularly in children's stories.
