Abstract

Surakarta City is traversed by the Bengawan Solo River Sub-Basin which includes Kali Pepe River, Gajah Putih River, Kali Anyar River, Jenes River, and Premulung River. This condition results in the main burden of river water pollution coming from anthropogenic activities, both domestic and industrial. This study aims to examine the influence of urban area dynamics on river health with a case study of Surakarta City. This study used qualitative descriptive method. Data collection was carried out through observation techniques, and depth interviews. The results showed that there are three factors that affect river health, namely population increase, industrial and domestic activities, and public perception and participation. Surakarta City is one of the areas that contributes to river pollution from moderate to severe levels. However, there have been many efforts to evaluate river health by the local government, namely by normalizing riverbanks, controlling waste pollution, and other river management programs.

Abstract

The development of urban areas needs to be accompanied by an improvement to the quality and quantity of the environment by providing public green open spaces such as green belt roads. This study aims to determine the diversity of vegetation and the functions in the green belt of Kotabaru Village, Yogyakarta City. The research was conducted using survey method in 14 green lanes to identify the type and amount of vegetation during September - October 2023. Based on the results of the study, 1407 individuals were found from 49 plant species. The diversity index (H') in the range of 0.64 - 2.12 is in the low to medium category. The evenness index (E) in the range of 0.69 - 0.93 is in the medium to high category. The dominance index (C) ranged from 0.12 to 0.38, including in the low category in all types of habitus (herbaceous, shrubs, shrubs, trees, and epiphytes). Vegetation in the green belt in Kotabaru Village can provide ecological, social, and economic functions for the surrounding community but still needs optimization in other functions such as community education. In addition, maintenance of green spaces also needs to be considered in order to provide sustainable vegetation functions.

Abstract

The city of Yogyakarta is a densely populated area that produces tons of waste every day. Waste needs to be managed to prevent negative impacts on the environment. This study aims to determine the implementation of sustainable waste management through the waste bank program. The location of this research includes 4 active waste banks in Kotabaru Village, Yogyakarta City. Data collection was carried out during September - October 2023 through observation, interview, and documentation techniques. The data obtained will be processed by data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing.  Waste management is an important element in efforts to create sustainable cities in accordance with SDGs 11, "Sustainable Cities and Settlements" and SDGs 12, "Sustainable Consumption and Production". According to the research results, there are 3 main factors that become obstacles to waste bank management, including public awareness, limited management resources, and weak administrative systems. The implementation of sustainable waste management through the waste bank program in Kotabaru Village has been implemented well but needs to be optimized to be effective in managing community waste.
