Abstract

Language has evolved into a powerful depiction of the changes and evolutions occurring in the continually expanding fashion business. It is particularly identifiable in the vocabulary employed in the fashion industry, which is getting increasingly sophisticated in both structure and usage. This research aims to examine the word formation process of fashion terminology. As qualitative research, this research utilizes seven articles taken from the Vogue website published between the 5th and 7th of May related to the Coronation of King Charles III as data sources. Applying the word formation process proposed by Yule (2020) reveals that four types of word formation processes occur in 22 fashion terminology: derivation, compounding, borrowing, and multiple processes. The dominance of compounding highlights that fashion items undergo modifications in their type based on the compound terms' heads. Furthermore, the process with the second-highest number is derivation, which was created to meet a constant demand to represent new concepts in fashion terminology. Furthermore, the borrowing process reveals that all loanwords originated in French. It is supported by the fact that Paris, the French capital, is renowned as Europe's fashion center. Furthermore, the last process in this research is multiple processes, which involve two processes: borrowing and compounding.

Abstract

Mandalika is an Indonesian tourist destination notable for sports tourism, as a result of the construction of the Mandalika circuit as an infrastructure for various international events to be held. Moreover, Mandalika also contains natural and cultural resources that can be explored. Therefore, it is categorized as one of the 5 Super Priority Destinations and is still being developed to attract domestic and international visitors. This research analyses relational processes found in five selected Mandalika tourism texts uploaded on the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy website under the Systemic Functional Linguistics point of view. Based on the data acquired in this study, a qualitative method is used. Based on the analysis, each clause broadly reflects Mandalika’s features, but the participants involved have different ways of describing each feature. In addition, the dominance of identifying relational processes in intensive clauses (33%) highlights the most prominent elements of Mandalika, providing readers with the greatest recommendations to enjoy throughout their vacation to Mandalika.

Abstract

This research presents a stylistic analysis of a short story entitled The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck. At the grammatical level, transitivity is employed to achieve the objective of this research. This research is conducted to observe the transitivity process in the short story. By using the transitivity process, this research reveals the portrayal of the main female character. This research applies a qualitative method based on the type of data collected in this research. Based on the findings, there are six types of transitivity processes found, they are material, mental, relational, verbal, existential, and behavioural. Material process portrays the masculine manner of Elisa Allen, Mental process shows the boundaries between Elisa and her husband in their productive outlet, Relational process represents the masculinity in Elisa's appearance, Verbal process represents Elisa as a straightforward person, Existential process expresses Elisa's responsibility in fulfilling her husband's needs, and Behavioral process represents Elisa as a sensitive figure. The dominance of the material process emphasizes Elisa's way of defending herself from an environment that does not value her. Thus, the research findings concluded that Elisa Allen represents a woman who tries to express herself but is often not appreciated in a world dominated by men. Keywords: female character, SFL, stylistics, transitivity
