Abstract

Religious diversity is central to the Indonesian context. Since the Reformation, Indonesia has been mired in multifaceted crises such as self-determination conflicts (Aceh and Papua), identity politics, religious fundamentalism, terrorism, and social conflicts. One method of conflict resolution is interfaith dialogue. However, interfaith dialogue is insufficient to resolve the disputes. The limitation of this approach is that it disregards the importance of local issues and wisdom. Toba Batak is a tribe in North Sumatra where Christians, Muslims, and Parmalim coexist and live together. Dalihan Na Tolu explains that each human being has one essence in three persons, namely Hula-hula (blessing giver), Dongan Tubu (companion), and Boru (servant). Dalihan Na Tolu brings Christian, Muslim, and Parmalim into a trilogue. This research seeks to engage the concept of Dalihan Na Tolu with the idea of perichoresis of the Trinity, examining how this dialogue can shape a contextual understanding of God and Jesus Christ in the Toba Batak context. The pivotal inquiry pertains to integrating the concepts of Dalihan Na Tolu and perichoresis, fostering an imaginative model for interfaith dialogue within the Toba Batak context. Ultimately, this study proposes a contextual paradigm that promotes a trilogue among Christians, Muslims, and Parmalim, addressing Indonesia's complex tapestry of religious coexistence.

Abstract

This article explores the theological conception of humanity within the framework of technological advancement, particularly Transhumanism, through the lens of John of Damascus’s concept of Christ’s perichoresis. The perichoreticconcept demonstrates that Christ, as a single person, embodies two distinct natures—divinity and humanity. In perichoresis, these two natures, while distinct, inhabit one another, allowing for mutual presence and interaction. They give space to each other, encircle one another, and move towards one another in an interpenetrative yet unconfused union, remaining undivided and inseparable. In the Transhumanist era, human existence through robotic enhancements (bionic humans) mirrors the dynamic of perichoresis, representing the coexistence of two distinct elements: the biological and the robotic. These elements inhabit and interact with each other, complementing and permeating one another, without subsuming or eliminating either. Thus, the perichoresis of Christ, as articulated by John of Damascus, serves as a constructive metaphor for understanding human identity in an age of technological integration, which dynamics and becoming.

Abstract

This article explores a comparison between the positive ideals presented in the Bible regarding the creation of the Earth and the current reality where the Earth is confronted with various environmental challenges such as pollution and climate crises. Although the Bible teaches that humans bear the responsibility of caring for and wisely using Earth's resources, the present reality reveals that human activities are causing environmental harm. Building upon this, the article delves into the meaning of humanity's task to subdue and cultivate the Earth, as outlined in Genesis 1:28. Employing a qualitative approach, the author intricately examines theological perspectives and documents from the Protestant Christian Batak Church (HKBP) to comprehend and apply the responsibility of preserving and nurturing the Earth. The emphasis is placed on the notion that involvement in these efforts extends beyond a global duty, encompassing a personal and familial calling to ensure the sustainability of the Earth as God's creation.

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the involvement of children in Holy Communion at GKPI using the theory of Being as Communion according to John Zizioulas. This article is motivated by the importance of Holy Communion as one of the sacraments that is a gift for all people. However, the GKPI itself as a Lutheran church rejects the idea of children participating in Holy Communion. This article departs from qualitative methods and uses a constructive theology approach, which aims to construct a theological understanding that children are also part of Communio Sanctorum and also participate in Holy Communion. Thus, through the theory of Being as Communion according to John Zizioulas, it can provide a relevant view for the GKPI in understanding Holy Communion for children, because children are also part of the Communio Sanctorum, Holy Communion is God's gift to all people and the experience of faith is not only a matter of theological formulation but also intuitive and emotional matters.

Abstract

Abstract The issue of environmental degradation has become a global concern, affecting various regions worldwide, including the Batak Toba community. Numerous efforts have been made to mitigate the worsening damage. This paper aims to explore moral values through Batak Toba local wisdom as a solution to environmental destruction. One approach is by instilling respect for trees. In Batak Toba mythology, Hariara Sundung di Langit is known as a sacred tree with profound symbolic meaning. The values embodied in this tree can be utilized to address environmental damage. This study employs a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach to explore the social ideas behind the meaning of Hariara Sundung di Langit, which is protected and nurtured by the Batak Toba community. The protection and preservation of Hariara Sundung di Langit can be applied as a step toward sustainable environmental conservation. This gives rise to the concept of Na Ture, an invitation to preserve a good and harmonious environment based on the Batak Toba worldview.

Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between Imago Dei and Transhumanism in the context of Christian theology, presenting research focused on critical analysis of relevant literature and theological interpretation of this complex relationship. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative with a literature review approach. Through the identification and analysis of contemporary theological literature, the study aims to understand the Christian theological perspectives on the concept of Imago Dei and its interaction with the phenomenon of transhumanism. The ethical and theological implications of this relationship are discussed by considering the optimistic vision of technology in achieving greater good and the framework of Imago Dei in addressing human limitations and dependence. The findings of this research are expected to provide a deep understanding of the Christian theological response to transhumanism and whether transhumanism is perceived as a challenge or a new paradigm within the framework of Imago Dei. In conclusion, Christian theology needs to support an optimistic view of technology while considering the ethical and theological dimensions of the changes proposed by transhumanism.
