Abstract

Abstract

This article analyzes the intertextual characteristics of Tafsīr al-Itqān fī Ma’ānī Umm al-Qur’ān by KH. Ahmad Haris Shadaqah, a prominent Nusantara scholar. The study examines how Shadaqah extensively integrates classical texts, such as Ḥashiyah al-Ṣāwi ‘ala al-Jalālayn, Marāh Labīd al-Nawāwi, Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, Anwār al-Tanzīl Wa Asrār al-Ta’wīl, and Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb, as well as Matn al-Ḥikam and Syarḥ al-Ḥikam, to produce a Javanese-language tafsir. Employing Julia Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality, this qualitative study combines literature review and fieldwork to identify intertextual patterns, including transformation, modification, haplology, expansion, and existence. The findings reveal that Shadaqah’s tafsir bridges classical Islamic thought and local cultural contexts, emphasizing the significance of local languages in the development of Qur’anic exegesis. This research highlights the adaptability of Islamic scholarly traditions in addressing contemporary and regional needs, contributing to the broader discourse on intertextuality and Qur’anic studies.

Abstract

Mawdu’i commentary is a method of Quranic interpretation that analyzes a specific surah or gathers verses with similar themes under one topic. This study employs a mawdu’i approach to examine the meaning of hanif in the Qur’an, focusing on verses that explicitly contain the word without including its derivations. The objective is to determine the criteria of the hanif religion practiced by Prophet Ibrahim while comparing interpretations from Meccan and Medinan period verses. Additionally, this research explores scholarly perspectives to contextualize the concept of hanif in Islamic theology. Using a qualitative mawdu’i approach, this study integrates linguistic, theological, and historical analyses. Its novelty lies in the contextual comparison of Quranic revelations, offering a dynamic interpretation of hanif. The findings reveal five key characteristics of the hanif religion: an inclination toward monotheism, sincerity in worship, belief in all messengers of Allah, orientation toward the Kaaba and Hajj, and a strong commitment to affirming Allah’s Oneness. This research highlights the Quranic legitimacy of Islam as the continuation of Ibrahim’s millah, distinguishing it from Jewish and Christian claims. By providing a structured thematic analysis, this study enhances the understanding of hanif and its relevance in contemporary Islamic thought. It emphasizes hanif as a foundational principle of monotheism, guiding Muslims in faith and devotion to Allah.

Abstract

This study examines the contextual interpretation of Surah al-Fatihah in Jawāhir al-Qur’an, a work by al-Ghazali, through the lens of Abdullah Saeed’s contextual hermeneutics. Al-Ghazali’s approach to Surah al-Fatihah combines esoteric and philosophical dimensions, emphasizing its spiritual and transcendental messages. Unlike traditional interpretations, his thematic focus refrains from detailed grammatical analysis, instead highlighting its role as a reflection of a believer’s spiritual journey. Employing a qualitative and library research methodology, this study contextualizes al-Ghazali’s interpretations for modern relevance, particularly in addressing contemporary issues of servitude and obedience to Allah. The findings suggest that al-Ghazali’s model of exegesis, rooted in Sufi thought, offers a dynamic framework for reinterpreting Qur’anic messages to maintain their applicability in contemporary life.
