Abstract

Text-to-Speech is an AI product that involves artificially producing human speech by converting text into voice using a speech synthesizer. The role of AI in ESL and EFL language instruction has been studied since 2010. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, research on the effectiveness of text-to-speech-based (TTS) e-modules in enhancing the listening skills of EFL students in Indonesia is still limited. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of Text-to-Speech-based e-modules (TTS e-modules) on the listening skills of EFL students in Indonesia. The TTS e-module was designed using the R D research approach with the ADDIE model. The samples were 60 seventh-grade students of junior high school in Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. During the evaluation phase, a pre-post quasi-experiment was conducted. The findings, evaluated using the 100-point scale, indicate below-average pre-test mean scores for both the control group (41.87) and the experimental group (37.87). After the intervention (using a TTS e-module for one semester / 14 classroom sessions x 90 minutes), the mean for the control group was 52.13, while that of the experimental group mean score increased to 69.93. The independent sample t-test scores confirmed significant differences in achievement, as indicated by the p-value of 0.000 0.05. This indicates that the null hypothesis was rejected. Positive student evaluations of the e-module further support the study's findings. The study concludes that the TTS e-module significantly improved the listening abilities of the participants. This research has implications for educators, students, and future scholars, and provides valuable insights into the innovative use of technology for language learning.

Abstract

Lexical bundles, which are recurring sequences of multiple words, play a crucial role in both written and spoken discourse. Understanding the presence and patterns of these bundles in educational materials is essential for effective language instruction and material development.This research aims to identify the most commonly utilized functional classifications of 3-word lexical bundles in junior high school EFL textbooks. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research methodology with a corpus-based analysis approach. The study's main methodological framework is a corpus-based approach, which combines quantitative and qualitative components to offer a thorough examination of the data. The data of this research comprises a collection of Indonesian junior high school EFL textbooks officially approved by the Ministry of Education. Specifically, the study examined textbooks used in grades 7-9, published in 2022. AntConc 4.3.1 was used to analyze the corpus, and N-Gram Tool was used to generate the 3-word lexical bundles in this study. The study shows that the most commonly utilized functional classifications of 3-word lexical bundles in junior high school EFL textbooks is the referential expressions category; there are 914 bundles (44.76%). Furthermore, the implication of this research is that these bundles should be used by educators, especially those implementing the independent curriculum, to create instructional materials that enhance students' syntactic and pragmatic skills.

Abstract

Transboundary haze has gained critical attention from global scholars since its impacts on society, economics, and health are prevalent in the mass media. By applying a corpus-ecolinguistics framework, this study examines the discourse of transboundary haze in Indonesian and Malaysian news media, broadcast between 2015 and 2024. This study 1) analyses the themes of transboundary haze news in Indonesian and Malaysian media, and 2) interprets the themes represented in the discourse ecologically. Using corpus analytical tools provided by Sketch Engine, this study examined the corpus keywords, collocations, and concordances. The findings show that, despite some identical themes, Indonesian mass media foreground the fires location, mitigation action, and non-human species impacted by the haze. In contrast, Malaysian mass media focuses on the affected areas and health issues. Both media involved similar strategies to frame the government as the responsible agent for mitigating the fires and haze. Ecologically, the discourse of transboundary haze in Indonesian and Malaysian mass media is ambivalent. In Indonesian media, transboundary haze is regarded as a disaster rather than a conflict due to human activities related to land clearings, whereas Malaysian media captures transboundary haze as a health and pollution issue. The ambivalent discourse is proven by the lack of human activities that cause transboundary haze, even though the media advocates for environmental and health issues as prevalent themes in news broadcasts. Ecologically, this study recommends that mass media emphasize the anthropocentric causes of transboundary haze to raise public awareness about human activities and their environmental consequences.
