Abstract

The Rohingya, a Muslim minority group in Myanmar, have long suffered systematic discrimination, persecution, and violence that has culminated since 2017. The Myanmar government refuses to grant citizenship to the Rohingya, considering them illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, even though they have lived in Myanmar for generations. To highlight the complex relationship between media, geopolitics, and public opinion formation, this research seeks to analyze potential biases and contrasting narratives between Western, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian media opinions on Rohingya Muslims. To examine the portrayal of the Rohingya as “refugees”, “victims of violence”, and “rejects”, this study used NVIVO 14 by analyzing 120 news stories, consisting of 40 stories from Western media (CNN and BBC News), 40 from Middle Eastern media (Al Jazeera and Alarabiya News), and 40 from Southeast Asian media (Kompas and The Star). The results showed that Western media tended to frame the Rohingya as victims of violence, Middle Eastern media highlighted the plight of refugees in some countries, while Southeast Asian media highlighted the theme of resistance to their arrival. The analysis also found that the media tended to use neutral sentiments, although bias was detected in certain narrative and framing choices. This research contributes to discourse studies by emphasising the importance of understanding framing biases in shaping public opinion and suggests further analysis that includes levels of semiotics and critical discourse to reveal the depth of media narratives on the Rohingya.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze UNWOMEN's efforts toward the elimination of honor killings in Pakistan. This article used the conceptual framework of transnational advocacy networks introduced by Keck and Sikkink. The research method of this article uses qualitative research with data sources from books, news, journal articles, official websites, and other supporting reports related to research needs. This research found that, first, information politics is carried out by collecting and disseminating information to raise public awareness through anti-violence programs. Secondly, symbolic politics involves using symbols and stories to influence public opinion and policy through various campaigns and slogans on social media. Third, leverage politics was used to pressure the Pakistani government through documentary films and appointing public figures as Goodwill Ambassadors. Finally, accountability politics focuses on monitoring the honor-killing phenomenon by implementing the principles of CEDAW. Then, there is a decrease in the number of honor killings, although not too significant, but it is the beginning of efforts to overcome honor killings in Pakistan. UNWOMEN's efforts aim to provide support and encouragement to the government and Pakistani society to jointly commit to eliminating honor killing. This article makes an important contribution to the role of international organizations in combating human rights violations in Pakistan.

Abstract

Islam is a religion that respects and upholds human values. Honor killing is a phenomenon that occurs in many countries, one of which is Pakistan. Therefore, this paper examines the practice of honour killing from the perspective of maqashid sharia. This paper uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach consisting of books, news, and journals relevant to this research. The findings in this study found that first, Pakistani society uses the tradition of honor killing as a legal tool for those who violate family honour. Second, the development of the practice of honor killing in Pakistan is due to cultural traditions and adapting from the laws of Qisas and Diyat. In the perspective of maqashid sharia, the practice of honor killing is contrary to the principle of al-Dharuriyat al-Khamsah, namely religion and soul. Through the principles in maqashid sharia, everything that contradicts the Qur'an and Sunnah is considered as behaviour that is not in accordance with Islamic sharia.
