Abstract

This study critically examines the intertextual patterns in Tafsīr al-Jāmi‘ li Aḥkām al-Qur’ān by al-Qurṭubī, focusing on its relationship with earlier works, particularly Aḥkām al-Qur’ān by Ibn al-‘Arabī. Intertextuality in this context refers to external influences and connections between texts, exploring how al-Qurṭubī engaged with, borrowed from, and elaborated on previous tafsīr literature. The research employs a descriptive-analytical method grounded in Julia Kristeva’s intertextual theory and is conducted through library research. The findings reveal distinct intertextual patterns, with the most prominent expansion pattern. This pattern involves quoting source texts and enriching them through elaboration and additional reasoning, demonstrating al-Qurṭubī’s intellectual engagement and methodological rigor. These results highlight the dynamic interplay between tradition and originality in al-Qurṭubī’s work, offering new insights into the intertextual practices in classical Islamic scholarship.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the intertextual patterns found in the muqaddimah of Ibn Kathīr’s Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-‘Aẓīm and its relation to Ibn Taymiyyah’s Muqaddimah fī Uṣūl al-Tafsīr to understand how classical exegesis practices evolved. A qualitative approach with an intertextual analysis framework focused on primary text comparison and thematic evaluation. The study identified vital patterns, including haplology, expansion, and transformation, illustrating how Ibn Kathīr integrated and adapted previous scholarly ideas to create his distinctive interpretative voice. Key results showed that these modifications were deliberate strategies emphasizing Qur'anic coherence and source authenticity. The findings underscore the innovative nature of classical Islamic scholarship and highlight the dialogic relationship between foremost scholars, demonstrating how intertextual strategies can shape religious literature. This analysis offers a foundation for future research on how scholarly interpretations were transmitted and adapted in other works. The paper includes detailed examples, references, and a comparative analysis of linguistic and thematic structures. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis keterkaitan antara pola-pola intertekstual yang ditemukan dalam muqaddimah Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-'Aẓīm karya Ibn Kaṡīr dengan Muqaddimah fī Uṣūl al-Tafsīr karya Ibnu Taimiyah untuk memahami bagaimana praktik-praktik tafsir klasik berkembang. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan kerangka analisis intertekstual yang berfokus pada perbandingan teks primer dan analisis tematik. Dalam penelitian ini, ditemukan pola-pola penting, termasuk haplologi, ekspansi, dan transformasi, yang mengilustrasikan bagaimana Ibnu Kathīr mengintegrasikan dan mengadaptasi gagasan-gagasan ilmiah sebelumnya untuk menciptakan suara tafsirnya yang khas. Hasil utama menunjukkan bahwa modifikasi ini merupakan strategi yang disengaja untuk menekankan koherensi Alquran dengan keaslian sumber. Temuan ini menggarisbawahi sifat inovatif dari kesarjanaan Islam klasik dan menyoroti hubungan dialogis antara para ulama terkemuka, menunjukkan bagaimana strategi intertekstual dapat membentuk literatur keagamaan. Analisis ini menawarkan sebuah landasan untuk penelitian di masa depan tentang bagaimana penafsiran ilmiah ditransmisikan dan diadaptasi dalam karya-karya lain. Penelitian ini mencakup contoh-contoh terperinci, referensi, dan analisis komparatif struktur linguistik dan tematik.

Abstract

This article explores Muhammad Asad’s interpretation of al-Islām through a critical analysis of his exegetical work The Message of the Qur’an. The study aims to examine how Asad departs from traditional interpretations by redefining al-Islām not as a rigid ideological construct but as a moral and spiritual disposition grounded in surrender to God. The research employs a descriptive-analytical method using linguistic-semantic analysis and historical-contextual approaches. Methodologically, the study focuses on Asad’s interpretation of key Qur’anic terms such as Islam, Muslim, and salām, analyzing their semantic fields and ethical implications. The results demonstrate that Asad views Islam as a universal path grounded in moral responsibility, extending beyond confessional boundaries. He contrasts with classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Fakhruddin Razi by emphasizing ethical universality over exclusivist dogma. The findings suggest that Asad’s inclusive approach contributes to religious pluralism, interfaith dialogue, and the redefinition of Muslim identity in multicultural societies. His interpretation reclaims the Qur’an’s original moral intent, offering a framework that integrates Islamic teachings with contemporary values. Ultimately, the study concludes that Asad’s hermeneutics position Islam as a dynamic ethical system capable of addressing modern social realities while remaining faithful to its spiritual core.

Abstract

This study explores the Qur’anic perspective on human trafficking through a thematic analysis of QS An-Nur 33 and QS Yusuf 19–20. The objective is to interpret the linguistic meanings of al-bighāʾ, syarā, and milk al-yamīn, and to map their alignment with the tripartite definition of the Palermo Protocol in order to formulate an Islamic ethical framework for combating trafficking. The research employs a qualitative library research method, integrating classical and contemporary tafsir (Ibn Kathir, al-Maraghi, Quraish Shihab) with human rights literature. Linguistic analysis reveals that the three Qur’anic terms represent the act, means, and purpose of modern exploitation. The interpretation of QS An-Nur 33 emphasizes the prohibition of forced prostitution and the protection of women's dignity, while the interpretation of QS Yusuf 19–20 critiques child commodification and highlights the trauma experienced by victims. Mapping these interpretations onto the Palermo Protocol uncovers a complete correspondence with the elements of act, means, and purpose, thereby reinforcing the legitimacy of Sharia in criminalizing trafficking. The synthesis of the values of ʿadl (justice), raḥmah (compassion), and karāmat al-insān (human dignity) generates an ethical paradigm that underpins legislation, faith-based advocacy, and rehabilitation programs. The findings affirm that the Qur’an not only aligns with but also enriches the international legal framework with spiritual motivation. Practical implications include issuing fatwas equivalent to ḥirābah, allocating zakat for victims, and developing anti-trafficking education curricula

Abstract

This study explores the ideological and cultural influences on the interpretation of Qur'anic verses through a comparative analysis of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) translation from Indonesia and the translation by Muhammad Taqi al-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan from Saudi Arabia. Focusing on theological, political, and gender themes, this study examines key verses addressing concepts such as tauhid (the oneness of God), awliyā’ (relations between Muslims and non-Muslims), and gender roles. The Kemenag translation reflects Indonesia's pluralistic and inclusive policies, promoting interfaith harmony, mutual respect, and gender equality. On the other hand, the Hilali-Khan translation adheres to a literal framework influenced by Wahhabi ideology, emphasizing theological exclusivity and traditional gender hierarchies. These differences highlight the impact of socio-political contexts on Qur'anic translation strategies and their implications for societal perceptions and theological discourse. Through a comparative textual and discourse analysis approach, this study demonstrates that inclusive and context-aware translations contribute to promoting justice, tolerance, and social cohesion. The findings underscore the need to balance theological fidelity with socio-political responsiveness to serve diverse Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study examines the exegetical methodology of Hasan al-Turabi in al-Tafsīr al-Tawḥīdī, a work distinguished by its tawḥīdī (unificationist) and ḥarakī (activist) framework. Using content analysis and ideological critique, this study dissects its epistemological foundations and interpretive strategies. The findings reveal several key characteristics. First, the concept of tawḥīd is not merely interpreted theologically but is operationalized as an epistemological principle and methodological foundation for a socio-political reform project. Second, his method selectively combines traditional sources (tafsīr bi al-riwāyah) with a dominant rational reasoning (tafsīr bi al-dirāyah), aligning with his ideological framework. Third, its structure employs a tahlīlī (analytical-sequential) method yet with a strong thematic touch through its tripartite systematics: a preface (khulāṣah hadī al-sūrah), a structural summary (tartīl al-ma‘ānī), and a detailed contemporary analysis (‘umūm al-ma‘ānī). Fourth, its interpretive flow is analytic-inductive, moving from a holistic overview of the sūrah to specific meanings, thereby building an action-oriented systemic paradigm. However, the analysis also reveals several fundamental weaknesses. A heavy reliance on ra'y, while sidelining the corpus of Hadith, creates space for the instrumentalization of the text for ideological purposes. Furthermore, his work is criticized for its limited methodological originality and inconsistent application of his method, suggesting a potential selective bias. This study offers a structured methodological assessment, sharply highlighting the dynamics and limitations of the tafsīr ḥarakī genre within contemporary Islamic discourse.
