Abstract

This research explores the historical foundations and development of the Zionist movement, emphasizing the involvement of European colonial powers in advancing its goals and the subsequent emergence of Palestinian nationalism as a counterforce. Employing a qualitative methodology that includes historical analysis and a comprehensive literature review, the study investigates the repercussions of Zionism on Palestinian society, the national resistance against the Zionist settler-colonial initiative, and the dominant efforts to marginalize Palestinian historical narratives. The findings reveal that the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, facilitated by colonial support, served as a pivotal moment in the Zionist agenda. Strategic errors by Arab nations and Palestinian leadership contributed to a weakened campaign for Palestinian independence. Despite these challenges, Palestinians have demonstrated remarkable resilience in maintaining their identity and asserting their rights. The study concludes that achieving lasting peace necessitates confronting historical injustices, safeguarding human rights, and promoting equitable and honest dialogue between the parties involved. It underscores the imperative for international assistance in formulating a just and comprehensive resolution. Furthermore, the research highlights the significance of drawing lessons from historical complexities to foster a more equitable and peaceful future in Palestine.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the intertextual patterns found in the muqaddimah of Ibn Kathīr’s Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-‘Aẓīm and its relation to Ibn Taymiyyah’s Muqaddimah fī Uṣūl al-Tafsīr to understand how classical exegesis practices evolved. A qualitative approach with an intertextual analysis framework focused on primary text comparison and thematic evaluation. The study identified vital patterns, including haplology, expansion, and transformation, illustrating how Ibn Kathīr integrated and adapted previous scholarly ideas to create his distinctive interpretative voice. Key results showed that these modifications were deliberate strategies emphasizing Qur'anic coherence and source authenticity. The findings underscore the innovative nature of classical Islamic scholarship and highlight the dialogic relationship between foremost scholars, demonstrating how intertextual strategies can shape religious literature. This analysis offers a foundation for future research on how scholarly interpretations were transmitted and adapted in other works. The paper includes detailed examples, references, and a comparative analysis of linguistic and thematic structures. Abstract

Compliance with government regulations and religious fatwas is essential to ensure the legality and safety of the hajj pilgrimage. However, performing hajj without a taṣrīh (official visa) has become a significant issue, particularly for Indonesian pilgrims with long waiting periods for official visas. This study examines the perspectives of religious scholars and fatwā institutions on the validity of hajj without taṣrīh factors that contribute to non-compliance and policy recommendations for Indonesian and Saudi authorities to address these violations. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research includes direct observation, in-depth interviews, and thematic analysis to explore the reasons and experiences of unauthorized pilgrims while depicting the perspectives of religious authorities and community leaders. Findings reveal that taṣrīh violations involve various actors, including individual pilgrims, public officials, and religious leaders like kiai, who use their influence to facilitate unauthorized hajj. Conflicting fatwas from authorities such as Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, and Hay'ah Kibār al-ʻUlamā’ add complexity to the issue. This study highlights the need for harmonized fatwā issuance and enhanced education on the implications of unauthorized hajj. Policy recommendations aim to improve compliance, align Sharia law with government regulations, and ensure a safe, orderly pilgrimage.

Abstract

This article discusses the significant role of pesantren in Indonesian politics. Pesantren institutions substantially influence shaping political perspectives, recruiting leaders, and organizing communities. During the New Order era, some pesantren supported the government to maintain political stability, while others were involved in Islamic political movements opposing the regime. Following the political reform in 1998, pesantren became more actively engaged in practical politics by supporting specific candidates or political parties and promoting Islamic values in political discourse. The research employs a qualitative method, analyzing relevant documents and literature and discussing the history of pesantren in Indonesian politics. It highlights the phenomenon of political pragmatism among kiai (Islamic scholars) and its impact on political dynamics. Pesantren and Kiai are central in shaping political perspectives, mobilizing the masses, and influencing policy-making.

Abstract

This study explores the Qur’anic perspective on human trafficking through a thematic analysis of QS An-Nur 33 and QS Yusuf 19–20. The objective is to interpret the linguistic meanings of al-bighāʾ, syarā, and milk al-yamīn, and to map their alignment with the tripartite definition of the Palermo Protocol in order to formulate an Islamic ethical framework for combating trafficking. The research employs a qualitative library research method, integrating classical and contemporary tafsir (Ibn Kathir, al-Maraghi, Quraish Shihab) with human rights literature. Linguistic analysis reveals that the three Qur’anic terms represent the act, means, and purpose of modern exploitation. The interpretation of QS An-Nur 33 emphasizes the prohibition of forced prostitution and the protection of women's dignity, while the interpretation of QS Yusuf 19–20 critiques child commodification and highlights the trauma experienced by victims. Mapping these interpretations onto the Palermo Protocol uncovers a complete correspondence with the elements of act, means, and purpose, thereby reinforcing the legitimacy of Sharia in criminalizing trafficking. The synthesis of the values of ʿadl (justice), raḥmah (compassion), and karāmat al-insān (human dignity) generates an ethical paradigm that underpins legislation, faith-based advocacy, and rehabilitation programs. The findings affirm that the Qur’an not only aligns with but also enriches the international legal framework with spiritual motivation. Practical implications include issuing fatwas equivalent to ḥirābah, allocating zakat for victims, and developing anti-trafficking education curricula

Abstract

This study explores the ideological and cultural influences on the interpretation of Qur'anic verses through a comparative analysis of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) translation from Indonesia and the translation by Muhammad Taqi al-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan from Saudi Arabia. Focusing on theological, political, and gender themes, this study examines key verses addressing concepts such as tauhid (the oneness of God), awliyā’ (relations between Muslims and non-Muslims), and gender roles. The Kemenag translation reflects Indonesia's pluralistic and inclusive policies, promoting interfaith harmony, mutual respect, and gender equality. On the other hand, the Hilali-Khan translation adheres to a literal framework influenced by Wahhabi ideology, emphasizing theological exclusivity and traditional gender hierarchies. These differences highlight the impact of socio-political contexts on Qur'anic translation strategies and their implications for societal perceptions and theological discourse. Through a comparative textual and discourse analysis approach, this study demonstrates that inclusive and context-aware translations contribute to promoting justice, tolerance, and social cohesion. The findings underscore the need to balance theological fidelity with socio-political responsiveness to serve diverse Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of digitalization on the teaching methods in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), with a particular focus on the deterritorialization process through digital technology integration. In many cases, the digital approach is leveraged to complement traditional learning for alumni and external audiences who seek the spiritual atmosphere of the pesantren, while santri mukim (resident students) continue to learn directly under the guidance of a kiai in a dedicated religious environment (masjid or musala). The main aim of this research is to analyze how classical methods such as halaqah, sorogan, and bandongan are adapted to digital platforms. By employing qualitative case study methodology, the research identifies the benefits of digitalization, including enhanced access to education beyond the boarding environment, expanded reach of religious teachings, and increased participation in learning activities. However, the study also highlights persistent challenges faced by many pesantren in implementing digital tools, including low digital literacy, limited infrastructure, and resistance to change. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by demonstrating that selective integration of digital tools can enhance the relevance of pesantren for a broader community while retaining traditional values. To ensure the sustainability of digital transformation, the study suggests the need for improved digital literacy training, collaboration with technology providers, and clear governance policies. Future research should focus on how remote pesantren can address infrastructure limitations and investigate the long-term effects of digitalization on character development and religious understanding among both resident and non-resident students.

Abstract

This study examines the exegetical methodology of Hasan al-Turabi in al-Tafsīr al-Tawḥīdī, a work distinguished by its tawḥīdī (unificationist) and ḥarakī (activist) framework. Using content analysis and ideological critique, this study dissects its epistemological foundations and interpretive strategies. The findings reveal several key characteristics. First, the concept of tawḥīd is not merely interpreted theologically but is operationalized as an epistemological principle and methodological foundation for a socio-political reform project. Second, his method selectively combines traditional sources (tafsīr bi al-riwāyah) with a dominant rational reasoning (tafsīr bi al-dirāyah), aligning with his ideological framework. Third, its structure employs a tahlīlī (analytical-sequential) method yet with a strong thematic touch through its tripartite systematics: a preface (khulāṣah hadī al-sūrah), a structural summary (tartīl al-ma‘ānī), and a detailed contemporary analysis (‘umūm al-ma‘ānī). Fourth, its interpretive flow is analytic-inductive, moving from a holistic overview of the sūrah to specific meanings, thereby building an action-oriented systemic paradigm. However, the analysis also reveals several fundamental weaknesses. A heavy reliance on ra'y, while sidelining the corpus of Hadith, creates space for the instrumentalization of the text for ideological purposes. Furthermore, his work is criticized for its limited methodological originality and inconsistent application of his method, suggesting a potential selective bias. This study offers a structured methodological assessment, sharply highlighting the dynamics and limitations of the tafsīr ḥarakī genre within contemporary Islamic discourse.

Abstract

The phenomenon of coercive begging raises complex social and ethical challenges. As a contemporary mufassir, Wahbah al-Zuḥaili addresses this issue through a distinctive approach that integrates modern social-ethical perspectives with Qur’anic teachings, specifically in QS. al-Baqarah (2): 273. This study aims to assess the ongoing relevance of his interpretation. It focuses on how al-Zuḥaili interprets coercive begging in this verse, as well as the epistemological and socio-political factors that shape his perspective. Employing Gadamer’s hermeneutics as the analytical framework, this research bridges the horizon of classical texts with contemporary social realities. The findings demonstrate that al-Zuḥaili’s interpretive method is both dynamic and integrative: he draws on lexical and grammatical analysis, classical and modern textual engagement, and historical experience to construct contextual and meaningful interpretations, all while remaining faithful to the core of the divine message. This model contributes to the evolution of Qur’anic interpretation, making it more responsive to the needs of contemporary society. The study reveals that al-Zuḥaili interprets the phrase lā yasʾalūn al-nās ilḥāfā as a prohibition of coercion rather than a blanket prohibition of asking. This interpretation reflects his engagement with the realities of coercive begging in Syria and Egypt during his lifetime. Al-Zuḥaili responds to the tension between scriptural text and contemporary socio-legal realities by proposing a practical alternative: rather than relying solely on criminal sanctions, governments should systematically identify vulnerable groups, foster interactive dialogue, and strengthen social welfare programs.
