Abstract

In Indonesia, gingivitis ranks second, reaching 96.58%. The 2018 Riskesdas data shows gingivitis cases at 74.1%. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gingiva caused by dental plaque. Gingivitis can also be influenced by hormonal factors. This study was con-ducted to determine the gingival status of children aged 10-12 years at SDN 01 Jajawar Banjar City. Descriptive study with cross sectional design, using total sampling technique on grade V and grade VI students totalling 58 students. Assessment of gingivitis was assessed using the modified gingival index. The results showed that 1 student had no gingivitis (1.7%), 20 students had the mild (34.5%), 33 students had the moderate (56.9%), and 4 students had the severe (6.9%). It is concluded that the highest pre-valence of gingivitis was at the age of 11 years at 50%. The prevalence of gingivitis in girls (58.6%) was higher than boys (38.7%).

Abstract

Dental caries lesions in children can have a significant impact on quality of life. According to WHO, QoL is a perception that comes from individuals consisting of functional abilities, interaction in society, psychological health, physical health, and life satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dental caries lesion status and quality of life in children aged 10-12 years at SDN 196 Sukarasa, Bandung City. Analytic observational descriptive research, with a cross-sectional study de-sign. Hypothesis testing was carried out using the Spearman Rank test. The results showed a mean DMF-T index value of 0.3 with low caries status (100%). The mean value of the def-t index was 2.1 with low (68%), medium (19%), and high (13%) caries sta-tus. There is a relationship between dental caries lesion status and quality of life in children. Statistically the correlation between the two is significant because it has a probability value of 0.000 (Sig.<0.05). The lower the score of the child's dental caries lesion sta-tus, the better the child's quality of life. It is concluded that dental caries lesion status can affect children's quality of life.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries is one of the most common health problems among school-aged children and can have long-term impacts on their quality of life. Most oral health promotion interventions to date remain conventional and are often unappealing to children. On the other hand, advancements in digital technology offer significant opportunities for developing more interactive and engaging educational approaches. Review: This literature review aims to analyze the relevance and effectiveness of integrating the Health Belief Model (HBM) with gamification in the development of digital interventions for school-aged children in the field of oral health. The literature findings indicate that HBM-based interventions are effective in enhancing children’s perceptions of susceptibility, benefits, and self-efficacy in maintaining oral health. Gamification has been shown to improve engagement and motivation through game elements such as points, challenges, and rewards. Several studies conclude that, although each approach has its own strengths, the strategic integration of HBM and gamification can address their respective limitations—particularly in achieving long-term behavior change. Conclusion: However, most digital interventions have not yet explicitly incorporated all components of the HBM, nor have they adequately addressed local contexts such as culture, technological access, and the role of teachers and parents. Therefore, there is a need for the design of digital intervention applications based on HBM and gamification through a co-design approach. This concept holds potential as a direction for further research in developing sustainable and evidence-based oral health promotion solutions in Indonesia.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of dental caries among school-aged children has been increasing annually, posing a significant public health concern. One of the key factors contributing to this issue is children's knowledge of oral and dental health. Poor oral hygiene and inadequate dental care knowledge are among the primary causes of oral health problems in children, leading to a higher risk of dental caries and other oral diseases. Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between dental health knowledge and dental care behavior among school-aged children at SDN 1 Jajawar, Banjar City. Methods: A descriptive-analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among fifth- and sixth-grade students aged 10 to 12 years at SDN 1 Jajawar. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of 36 items, designed to assess students' knowledge of dental health and dental care behaviors. Results: The findings revealed that 93.1% (n=54) of respondents demonstrated a low level of dental health knowledge and exhibited negative dental care behavior. This indicates a significant gap in awareness and practices related to oral hygiene among school-aged children. Conclusion: The study highlights the urgent need for enhanced education and intervention programs to improve children's knowledge of dental health and promote better oral hygiene practices. Strengthening oral health education at an early age is crucial in preventing dental caries and fostering lifelong positive dental care behaviors. Keywords: Dental caries, oral health knowledge, dental care behavior, school-aged children, oral hygiene, dental health education.
