Abstract

Introduction: COVID-19 is an infectious disease and has been declared a public health emergency. This disease can be transmitted through droplets and aerosols. This has an impact on the daily practice of dentistry which is vulnerable to infection when treating patients. Teledentistry can be applied in routine dental practice during the COVID-19 period to prevent direct contact. Patient demand for the application of teledentistry has increased five times during the COVID-19 pandemic, the purpose of this narrative study is to compare the application of teledentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic in developed and developing countries. Methods: This study is a narrative review study. Article searches obtained from Pubmed, EBSCO, and Wiley (n=648) were limited to 2020-2021 in relation to the application of teledentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic in developed and developing countries. We found 33 articles that met the inclusion criteria (n=33), introductory articles, and narrative study guides (n=9), and the total articles used (n=42). Results: The use of teledentistry can be grouped into academic and interdisciplinary learning curricula, postoperative patient follow-up, monitoring of patients due to dentoalveolar trauma, use of dental monitoring for orthodontic treatment, non-emergency conditions, prescribing antibiotics, use of teleradiology, and assisting the practice of departments of oral disease and maxillofacial surgery in several developed and developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: The application of teledentistry in developing countries focuses on teleconsultation and non-emergency conditions compared to the application of teledentistry in developed countries which has focused on emergency conditions, dental monitoring for orthodontic treatment, and postoperative patient follow-up.

Abstract

Background: Epidemiological data on gingival status in children is important because periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent diseases in Indonesia. This study aimed to assess the gingival health status and its associated factors among 12-year-old schoolchildren in Jakarta. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 12-year-old schoolchildren. There were 481 students who were recruited from 24 public and private junior high schools in Jakarta using multistage cluster proportional-to-size random sampling. Periodontal status was recorded using the community periodontal index based on World Health Organization standards. A self-completed questionnaire was given to the parents to collect information on children's backgrounds and oral health-related behaviours. Results: Only 3 of 478 participating children had healthy gums (no bleeding gums and no calculus). 99% of the children had bleeding gums and 84% had calculus. The prevalence of calculus was higher in girls than in boys. Periodontal status was not significantly related to tooth brushing habits or dental check-ups. Conclusions: Poor periodontal conditions were highly prevalent among 12-year-old schoolchildren in Jakarta. Oral health promotion and prevention strategies are urgently required.

Abstract

Introduction: Demographic population changes towards the aging population can impact dentists to provide oral health care. Oral health care needs and problems among the elderly differ from those in the general population. They require consideration and optimal treatment planning. In providing oral health care to the elderly, dentists may encounter various barriers, and it may become challenging for dentists to meet elderly needs and overcome their oral health problems. Review: Dentists perceive several factors as barriers and challenges in providing oral health care to the elderly, such as knowledge in geriatric dentistry, experience providing the treatment, complexity of treatment, practical barriers, and financial aspect, thus making dentists not sufficiently prepared to provide oral health care for the elderly. Conclusion: Barriers perceived by dentists in providing oral health care to the elderly need to be addressed to increase the readiness of dentists and overcome the barriers so they can provide oral health care optimally, meet the elderly needs, and overcome their oral health problems.

Abstract

Background: One of the goals of Indonesia’s participation in sustainable development goals is to improve its health state. Efforts to achieve health improvement are increasing the availability of health care facilities so people can easily access and get treatment for dental and oral health. As we know, the first case of COVID-19 in Indonesia was found in March 2020 and all cases were spread over 34 provinces. During this pandemic situation, health care facilities and some dental treatments generating aerosols are one of the environments that can potentially transmit COVID-19 to the community. Dentists have the riskiest job because they must be less than two meters from patients. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the distribution of health care facilities, dental visits and oral health problems to prevent increased exposure to COVID-19 by using a geographic information system to explore the distribution of regional data. Methods: This study is a secondary data analysis and used data from Indonesia Basic Health Research 2018 and Health Facility Research 2019. Data of health care facilities, dental visits and oral health problems were tabulated using MS Excel version 16.45. Spatial mapping was done using Quantum Geographic Information System Desktop version 3.18.3 based on open-source software. Results: Java Island has the highest distribution of health care facilities and receives treatment from the dentist. COVID-19 reached a peak in June–July 2021, and Java Island became the region with the highest incidence rate. Conclusion: The distribution of health care facilities and dental visits was in line with the spread of the COVID-19 virus in 34 provinces. Almost all treatments of oral health problems need a highspeed rotary instrument, which can be a source of transmission of this virus.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Oral health and nutrition problems in children cannot be separated. Both share the same risk factors. The high prevalence of malnutrition and Early childhood caries (ECC) in developing countries, especially in Indonesia, still needs attention. This study aims to analyze the relationship between ECC and the nutritional status of children aged five years in Indonesia based on the 2018 Riskesdas data. The study used a cross-sectional study using secondary data from Riskesdas 2018. A sample of 701 children aged five years was subjected to clinical examinations and questionnaires. ECC as the independent variable and other risk factors; self-reported oral health, gender, mother's education level, father's employment status, family economic status, children's dietary practices, and utilization of health facilities were analyzed against nutritional status based on weight/height categories converted by Z-score. Results showed that the chi-square test showed a significant correlation between ECC, maternal education level, family economic status and dietary practices at risk of children on nutritional status (p-value <0.05). Multinomial logistic regression test proved a significant correlation between ECC and wasting (OR = 1.352, 95% CI: 0.989 – 2.589). ECC is not correlated with obesity. The conclusion is ECC can cause wasting in children. Meanwhile, several risk factors for nutritional problems and dental caries were similar. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p235-256

Abstract

Introduction: Early childhood caries severity assessment requires a concise, simple, and reliable instrument, incorporate the factors involved in the development of caries in childhood. Caries Risk Assessment and Referral Tool instrument can be used to assess caries risk scores without clinical examination and used by dentists in planning further treatment. Methods: Literature searches were conducted in the PubMed/Medline and Science Direct databases published from 2019 to 2022 on caries risk assessment, early childhood caries, and referral tools. Results: Based on a search on PubMed, 118 journals were found, and 125 journals were found on Science Direct. 23 journals were discovered after journals were filtered by title and exclusion criteria. Furthermore, additional 28 journals were added as references with a manual search method. Conclusion: CRA-RT is very helpful, especially during a pandemic with minimal clinical examinations. It is quite simple and can be used by non- dental or non-medical personnel. So that cases of ECC are easier to find, and can be treated to reduce the severity.
