Abstract

Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD) is a common occupational health issue among palm oil harvesters, who are frequently exposed to irritants such as crude palm oil, fertilizers, and pesticides. ICD is characterized by inflammation of the skin resulting from direct contact with irritants that disrupt the skin barrier without involving an allergic response (Diepgen et al., 2016). This review systematically examines global research on ICD in palm oil harvesters, focusing on its etiology, pathophysiology, prevalence, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies.

Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by pruritus, erythema, and impaired skin barrier function. Conventional treatments such as topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors effectively reduce inflammation but pose potential adverse effects that limit their long-term use. Consequently, natural-based alternatives like curcumin have gained increasing interest. Curcumin, a principal polyphenol in turmeric (Curcuma longa), is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. Its mechanisms in AD involve the inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway, downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-13, TNF-α), and enhancement of filaggrin and ceramide production, which are crucial for restoring skin barrier function. This study is a systematic review aimed at evaluating the efficacy of curcumin in alleviating AD-related inflammation based on recent clinical and experimental studies. The meta-analysis revealed that nano-curcumin formulations were more effective than conventional curcumin in reducing atopic skin lesions and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Additionally, combining curcumin with emollients or essential oils exhibited synergistic effects in improving skin hydration and reducing inflammation. In conclusion, curcumin demonstrates significant potential as an adjuvant therapy for AD; however, further research is required to determine its long-term efficacy and safety profile in clinical applications.

Abstract

Buah kepel (Stelechocarpus burahol) adalah tanaman endemik Indonesia dengan nilai budaya dan medis. Secara tradisional, buah ini digunakan sebagai deodorant alami, agen detoksifikasi, dan perawatan kulit. Analisis fitokimia menunjukkan kandungan senyawa bioaktif seperti flavonoid, polifenol, tanin, alkaloid, saponin, dan antioksidan kuat, yang berperan dalam menangkal radikal bebas, mengurangi inflamasi, memperbaiki kolagen dermis, dan melindungi kulit dari paparan sinar ultraviolet. Penelitian dalam 20 tahun terakhir semakin menegaskan peran kepel dalam mekanisme antioksidan, anti-inflamasi, anti-aging, fotoprotektif, dan perbaikan hidrasi kulit. Tinjauan ini bertujuan mengevaluasi bukti ilmiah terkini terkait efektivitas kepel terhadap kesehatan kulit, termasuk mekanisme molekuler, hasil penelitian praklinis, dan uji klinis terbatas. Pencarian literatur dilakukan pada basis data PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, dan Google Scholar (2005–2025) dengan kata kunci terkait. Kriteria inklusi meliputi penelitian in vitro, in vivo, dan uji klinis yang menilai manfaat kepel terhadap kesehatan kulit. Dari 256 artikel yang ditemukan, 72 diseleksi berdasarkan judul, 40 artikel melalui telaah teks penuh, dan 20 memenuhi kriteria inklusi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kepel meningkatkan hidrasi kulit, mengurangi stres oksidatif, menurunkan inflamasi, memperlambat penuaan, dan memiliki efek fotoprotektif. Walaupun hasil praklinis mendukung manfaat tersebut, bukti klinis pada manusia masih terbatas, sehingga diperlukan uji klinis berskala besar dan formulasi dermatologis untuk memastikan efektivitas dan keamanan kepel.
