Abstract

Background: In Bangladesh, the percentage of children found moderately and severely underweight were respectively 16.4% and 3.6% all over the country in 2018. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of and factors affecting childhood underweight<5 years old and identify socioeconomic inequalities contributing to childhood underweight in Bangladesh. Methods: Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey Data (2007, 2011, 2014 & 2017-2018) of 30,940 pairs were used for analysis. Chi-square tests were used to estimate the relationship between the independent variables chosen and underweight, binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate potential risk factors, and decomposition analysis was conducted to assess inequality. Results: Binary logistic regression demonstrated that the children’s age, mother’s BMI, mother’s education level, father’s educational status, child delivery procedure, birth order of the child, recent diarrhea affectedness before the survey, sanitation, and wealth index were discovered to be essential variables affecting childhood underweight of children under 5 years old in Bangladesh.  Conclusion: The associated factors with underweight in this study should be considered when designing policies and programs, making it more effective to eradicate the underweight problem among children in Bangladesh.

Abstract

Background: Smoking is still a significant global public health concern, especially for young people who are more likely to start and maintain smoking habits that could result in long-term health problems.  The current study aims to measure smoking prevalence and attitudes among students and identify the associated factors of smoking. Methods: The quantitative method determined smoking prevalence, attitudes, and associated factors among students. A simple random sampling technique was used in the study area. 29 disciplines of the Khulna University campus were enrolled in this study. To observe the smoking initiation rates while studying at the university, first-year to master’s level students participated. Results: A total of 270 students were enrolled. Among them, almost 40.37% of respondents were non-smokers. To measure nicotine dependency, the Fagerstrom test was used. Compiled responses showed that the highest number of respondents, with a percentage of 24.07%, were found to have moderate nicotine dependence, with a score of 5-7. The second highest number of respondents (17.41%) was found to have low to moderate dependence on nicotine. The findings revealed that among the Knowledge and Attitude towards smoking, Students who oppose public smoking bans have a higher likelihood of nicotine dependence (AOR = 6.8, p < 0.001). The belief that smoking causes illness has no significant impact on nicotine dependence (AOR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.47-2.40, p = 0.886) through a logistic regression model. Conclusion: Students older than 20 are more likely to smoke than those under 20. Family, social environment, and the smoking behavior of friends influence smoking. All risk factors, including history and university period, should be considered together in tobacco control.

Abstract

Coastal areas in Bangladesh are highly vulnerable to environmental and socioeconomic issues, leading to significant setbacks in children’s education. In a disaster-prone area like Satkhira, Shyamnagar Upazila, the root causes for high rates of student dropouts in schools are interlinked with the natural calamities of the land. This study aims at identifying the multifaceted challenges tending to school dropouts in the disaster-prone coastal area of Shyamnagar Upazila, Bangladesh. To achieve the aim, this study employs an exploratory qualitative design and purposive sampling, including structured interviews for 34 participants: 10 dropout children (aged between 10–16), 12 parents of dropout children, and 12 teachers from primary and secondary schools. Findings highlight that there are factors, such as natural calamities and scarcity of water, that directly hinder the education process and increase dropout rates. Economic constraints force children to leave schools so that they can work and earn money, alongside sociocultural factors such as child marriage and other gender norms. The study found that people who dropped out of school feel remorse and want to go back to school but get little or no assistance from the stakeholders. Inadequate infrastructure, sociocultural barriers, and psycho-social issues are also contributors to school dropouts.
