Abstract

Abstract The women's movement in Indonesia has active involvement in the political field, but there is still a gap in terms of women's participation and representation in formal political structures. Women's political representation is quite important if we want to have a gender-friendly democracy. After the publication of PKPU number 10 of 2023, the position of women was degraded and of course this is very dangerous for gender equality, the existence of this provision gave rise to a polemic in terms of the hierarchy of PKPU statutory regulations, which directly contradicts Law number 7 of 2017 concerning elections which states women's representation is at least 30%, legal feminist theory sees that this representation figure actually makes women's position weaker. The type of research used is library research using the statutory approach method. Meanwhile, the analysis used is juridical-normative analysis, where in this case the author will describe an event by providing analysis through the lens that the author uses. through theories, principles, concepts and other things that are interrelated. Whereas the regulations issued by the KPU, namely PKPU number 10 of 2023, place women's position in a reductive marginal position in politics or the arena of political contestation in 2024. Whereas from the perspective of feminist legal theory its nature is rejection or refusal, this theory emphasizes the aspect of equality based on arguments. and also ideology, a feminist legal theory perspective certainly rejects the 30% female representation figure because it directly makes women marginal-reduce. Keywords— elections, women's representation, feminist legal theory

Abstract

Neo-Orientalism, as a new form of epistemic colonialism, continues to shape the representation of Malay Islam in Indonesia and Malaysia through narratives of marginality, essentialism, and Western global discourse hegemony. This study conducts a comparative analysis of intellectual responses by key figures in both countries to this knowledge hegemony. In Indonesia, Nurcholish Madjid and Abdurrahman Wahid employed critical accommodation strategies by Islamizing values of democracy and pluralism. Azyumardi Azra engaged in epistemic negotiation by reconstructing historical networks of ulama to reject the “peripheral Islam” narrative. In Malaysia, Chandra Muzaffar negotiated critiques of Western bias in human rights discourse, while Syed Naquib al-Attas promoted radical epistemic resistance through the Islamization of knowledge based on adab and tawhid. Haedar Nashir in Indonesia rejected the “moderate vs radical” categorization as a neo-Orientalist project. The analysis reveals that Malay Islam is not anti-modernity but actively Islamizes modernity. Differences in strategies reflect national contexts, yet their synthesis forms an alternative civilization model that is tolerant and cosmopolitan. This research proposes a decolonization model for Malay Islamic knowledge that integrates accommodation, negotiation, and resistance for an independent scholarly future. (198 words)

Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of Indonesia’s political structure from a federal system to a unitary state during the 1950s, with particular attention to center–periphery relations, the emergence of the PRRI and Permesta movements, and their political implications for the configuration of national power. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in historical research, the study utilizes document analysis of state archives, legal and regulatory texts, political speeches, and relevant academic literature. The data are examined through qualitative content analysis and historical interpretation to identify patterns of power centralization, elite fragmentation, and fiscal–political tensions between the central government and regional authorities. The findings indicate that the transition to a unitary state was shaped by a complex interaction of parliamentary political dynamics, unequal resource distribution, and post-election institutional instability. PRRI and Permesta emerged as expressions of regional dissatisfaction with increasing centralization rather than as explicitly separatist movements; however, the escalation of these conflicts contributed to the weakening of parliamentary democracy. The study further demonstrates that the dissolution of the Masyumi Party and the Indonesian Socialist Party (PSI) reflected state-led efforts to consolidate political authority within the framework of Guided Democracy. This research contributes to historical scholarship on center–region relations and the processes of political centralization in postcolonial state formation.
