Abstract

This qualitative research aimed at finding out the speech acts and the functions of expressive illocutionary theorized by Searle & Vanderveken and Leech in conversations among characters in “The Summer I Turned Pretty” TV Series. The observational method and note-taking technique were employed to collect data. To analyze the data, the researchers used the pragmatic identity method. This research used a descriptive narrative method to present the results. Therefore, the results are presented in words and sentences. The findings of this research were of 13 different acts, and four different functions from 15 data. The researchers found there are 3 data of thank, 2 data of apologize, 1 data of greeting, 1 data of congratulate, 1 data of praise, 1 data of protest, 1 data of complaint, 1 data of lament, 1 data of deplore, 1 data of condole, 1 data of compliment, 1 data of boast, and 1 data of welcome. The most dominant act is the act of thank with 3 data. This is because the speakers and the hearers used to express gratitude. Based on the functions, there are 11 data of convivial, 2 data of conflictive, 1 data of collaborative, and 1 data of competitive found. The most dominant function of expressive act is convivial. This is because the speaker and the hearer show respect and politeness.

Abstract

This research study was to identify the types of conjunction in “Ivanka Trump's 2020 Republican National Convention” speech. The researchers used the theory of the types of conjunction by Halliday & Hasan (1976). This research used a qualitative method that is formed on data and its explanation cannot be measured in numbers by Creswell (2018). This research used a method of observation to collect the data The researchers used the pragmatic identity method by Sudaryanto (2015) to analyze the data in the “Ivanka Trump’s 2020 Republican National Convention” speech. The result of this research showed additive type, adversative type, causal type, and temporal type are identified in the “Ivanka Trump's 2020 Republican National Convention” speech. The type of additive conjunction is dominant in the speech because the speech connects two or more phrases or sentences and the adversative conjunctions are at least type in the speech entitled “Ivanka Trumps 2020 Republican National Convention”. According to the findings, there are a total of 126 data conjunctions, 72 data related to additive conjunctions, 11 data related to adversative conjunctions, 19 data related to causal conjunctions, and 24 data related to temporal conjunctions.

Abstract

Language is a means of communication for every human being. Also, having several types of languages ??such as regional languages, state languages ??and international languages ??is English. English in general has existed since elementary school to college. Many adults are still wrong in the use of good and correct English so that it requires more extra learning. One method of improving English through vocabulary is speaking like an interview. In the interview, there were also presenters and auditors who interacted with each other. The best interviews mostly speak correct vocabulary and sentences. In this study, researchers took sources from interviews with students from the University of Putera Batam as a team. In this study, the researcher aims to analyze grammatical errors and focus on grammatical errors in presenters, which have been obtained using qualitative descriptive methods. The method of presentation is using descriptive presentation in the form of words or sentences that do not have a percentage or value in the form of numbers, where the researcher analyzes according to the error class category of the data. From the results of this study, the researcher found 15 data where the data consisted of errors of auxiliary verbs and tenses.
