Abstract

The goal of this qualitative research was to identify the types and function of taboo language used by the characters in the "Wade" movie. This research applied the theories of Battistella (2005) to identify the types of taboo language. The data were taken from all of the characters' taboo language-expressing utterances. This study used the observational method and non- participatory technique by using Sudaryanto's (2015) theory to gather data. This research used identity method data and referential competence in equalizing technique (Sudaryanto, 2015). The findings of this study were presented as follows. First, the characters in the Wade movie use four different sorts of taboo language. They were obscenity, vulgarity, profanity, and epithet. Obscenity, epithets, vulgarity, and profanity were the most often utilized taboos, accounting for 12 of the 30 data points from the Wade movie. Second, the movie Wade had 30 instances of four prohibited language functions. Profanity appeared as the latest. The reason for the seven instances of scorn, the twelve instances of self-promotion, the six instances of provocativeness, and the two instances of mocking authority was that the major theme of the film is a romantic comedy, which was not criticized much to the institution such as government and organization in society.

Abstract

A Pro-life event held by Student for Life turned chaotic. This phenomenon can be attributed to the occurrence of negative impoliteness strategies, which attack one’s negative face-wants. This research is aimed to analyze the strategies and the functions of negative impoliteness in the event. This research is descriptive-qualitative, using observational and non-participatory techniques for the data collection. The collected data were analyzed according to the theory of Culpeper (1996, 2011) for the strategies of negative impoliteness and their functions. The results showed that there were negative impoliteness strategies done by the pro-choice audience to frighten, condescend, ridicule, scorn, invade, explicitly associate with negative aspects, and hinder the pro-life speakers and members, which were functioning as coercive and affective impoliteness, consequently turned the event chaotic. They knew and were able to act polite, but decided not to. Arguments aside, both parties should have engaged in a professional and mature attitude.

Abstract

A required and significant subject that high school pupils need to be proficient in is English. English puts more of an emphasis on communication skills than just providing the knowledge needed to pass a written exam. The training, which was attended by 104 participants, was carried out at SMA Putra Batam, SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Batam, SMAN 20 Batam, SMAN 25 Batam, and SMAN 15 Batam from November 2023 to January 2024. Service learning with models of lectures, discussions, and practice doing was the method. During the oral pre-test, 35 (33%) participants were able to pronounce the phoneme sounds in both American and British English. Then, from the oral post-test, 88 (84%) participants were able to pronounce the same phonemes in both English versions. 53 (51%) participants saw an improvement in their skills after training
