Abstract

The ability of students to comprehend hikayat texts remains a challenge due to the linguistic complexity of hikayat, which incorporates both standard Malay and archaic forms. This study aims to address the question of an effective learning model that can provide optimal solutions for the students of class XE-7 at MAN 2 Malang City. Using a qualitative approach, the research employed interviews with teachers to identify learning-related problems, classroom observations to examine the learning environment, and documentation as evidence for the learning process and outcomes. Data collection included questionnaires to evaluate students’ experiences during the learning process and their comprehension of hikayat texts. The findings revealed that contextual learning methods significantly enhanced students' ability to understand and engage with hikayat texts. The students demonstrated strong performance in answering questions related to the material and reported that contextual learning made lessons more comprehensible and engaging. These results suggest that incorporating contextual learning strategies can improve student comprehension and learning outcomes in studying hikayat texts.

Abstract

The naming of villages in Peniwen Village represents a linguistic practice embedded with cultural meanings, collective memory, and socio-ecological relations of the local community. This study addresses the limited integration of anthropolinguistic approaches with systematic digital semantic analysis in toponymic research. The aim of this study is to uncover the cultural meanings of village names in Peniwen Village through semantic domain mapping using the UCREL Semantic Analysis System (USAS). This research adopts a qualitative approach with a narrative study design. Data were collected through narrative exploration, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and analyzed using content analysis combined with USAS semantic tagging. The results of the study show that the naming of villages in Peniwen Village is not arbitrary, but rather structured in several dominant semantic domains, namely the meaning of space and spatial orientation (M6, M7), nature and environment (W1, L2, L3), as well as collective thoughts, beliefs, and ideologies (S1.2.1, X2.1, X2.6). These results demonstrate that toponymy functions as a medium for transmitting cultural values, belief systems, and ecological knowledge across generations, while highlighting the contribution of digital semantic approaches in advancing anthropolinguistic studies and sustainable cultural heritage preservation.AbstrakPenamaan kampung di Desa Peniwen merepresentasikan praktik kebahasaan yang memuat makna budaya, memori kolektif, dan relasi sosial-ekologis masyarakat setempat. Penelitian ini berangkat dari persoalan masih terbatasnya kajian toponimi yang mengintegrasikan pendekatan antropolinguistik dengan analisis semantik digital secara sistematis. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengungkap makna budaya penamaan kampung di Desa Peniwen melalui pemetaan domain semantik menggunakan UCREL Semantic Analysis System (USAS). Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan desain studi naratif. Data dikumpulkan melalui eksplorasi naratif, wawancara mendalam, dan studi dokumentasi, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan analisis isi dan penandaan semantik USAS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penamaan kampung di Desa Peniwen tidak bersifat arbitrer, melainkan terstruktur dalam beberapa domain semantik dominan, yaitu makna ruang dan orientasi spasial (M6, M7), alam dan lingkungan (W1, L2, L3), serta pemikiran, kepercayaan, dan ideologi kolektif (S1.2.1, X2.1, X2.6). Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa toponimi berfungsi sebagai medium pewarisan nilai budaya, sistem kepercayaan, dan pengetahuan ekologis masyarakat secara lintas generasi, sekaligus menunjukkan potensi pendekatan semantik digital dalam memperkaya kajian antropolinguistik dan pelestarian warisan budaya berkelanjutan.
