Abstract

The impact of the novel coronavirus has been severe, and while crises are impossible to predict, they must be anticipated and planned for in business. However, less is known about the preparedness of emerging markets, particularly in the hospitality industry in Nigeria. Therefore this study seeks to situate the service quality debate within the emerging hotel service arena by exploring service quality and business outcomes in selected hotels within the Ogun East senatorial district, Ogun State, Nigeria. The study adopted the survey research design, which is cross-sectional. A convenience sampling technique was adopted in arriving at the respondents. A total of 232 copies of a questionnaire were received from the customers of twenty hotels in six major towns within the Ogun East senatorial district -Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye, Ijebu-Igbo, Sagamu, Ilishan-Remo, and Iperu-Remo representing 89.3% response rate. The regression analysis was carried out to test the effect of service quality on business outcomes. The main findings of the empirical study show that there is strong support for service quality to improve business outcomes in hotels. Specifically, service quality significantly impacted both competitiveness and brand recognition, the study's two measures of business outcomes. However, taken individually, the study found that tangibility as a factor showed little impact on outcomes but a strong impact on brand recognition. Similarly, service assurance significantly affected business competitiveness but only mildly impacted brand recognition. The distinct effects of service quality and business outcomes post-pandemic in Nigeria were highlighted. It also provided hotel stakeholders and owner-managers with insights on the need to enshrine service quality management in the corporate policies to reduce customer dissatisfaction and poor business outcomes. It is also essential for hotel operators to stay abreast of the current and future needs of an ever-evolving industry and to meet the demands of guests who are becoming more sophisticated. Innovation and originality are essential to the hotel industry's outcome. This is one of the first studies to provide empirical evidence of the relationship between service quality and business outcomes post-pandemic in Nigeria. The results provide new insights into this relationship and may clarify divergent results found in the literature from other climes

Abstract

The common factors determining Commercial banks’ lending to SMEs are internal and external. This study assessed the combined effect of these two factors that determine the commercial banks’ credit accessibility and SMEs’ growth in Nigeria. Data from 1990 to 2023 were used to evaluate the hypothesis. The outcome demonstrates that the internal factors of commercial banks factors on credit accessibility to SMEs were 0.039110 and statistically significant at the 5% level (p-value = 0.0254). The outcome suggests that internal factors of commercial bank determinants on the availability of credit to SMEs play a significant impact on the expansion of SMEs in Nigeria. At the 5 per cent level, the external influence of commercial banks on SMEs' access to credit was -0.014003 and statistically insignificant (p-value = 0.2757). The results will substantially aid in designing and implementing monetary policy about the cash reserve requirement. It also conveys to SMEs the significance of cash reserve requirements in improving loan accessibility in Nigeria. As a result, the paper recommends that monetary policy be continually improved to favour SMEs because doing so will facilitate their expansion.

Purpose – This study aims to identify the factors influencing entrepreneurial intentions among private university students in South-West Nigeria, and to determine their significance.Methodology – The study population consisted of final-year students from the Faculty/College of Business and Social Sciences across 11 selected private universities in South-West, Nigeria, offering entrepreneurship courses. This study used a sample of 623 students. Data were collected using a self-developed instrument with a reliability coefficient of 0.847 for student-related factors and 0.80 a entrepreneurial intentions. The Relative Significance Index (RSI) and multiple regression analyses were used.Findings – The results revealed that most students perceived several factors as influential on entrepreneurial intention. The key factors were students’ personal factors, family history, technical abilities, and parental attitude. Despite recognizing these influences, many students lacked the skills to solve challenges and effectively utilized technical literature and other information sources. Multiple regression analysis indicated that student parental attitude, student personal factors, and technical abilities significantly influenced entrepreneurial intentions.Implications – This study highlights the importance of enhancing students' personal factors, technical abilities, and parental attitudes to foster entrepreneurial intention. Educational institutions and policymakers should focus on these areas to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among students.Originality – This study provides empirical evidence on the determinants of entrepreneurial intentions among private university students in Nigeria, contributing to a broader understanding of how personal, familial, and technical factors shape entrepreneurial aspirations.

Abstract

Recent interest among both SME operators and academics/professionals in determining what factors influence the capital structure and performance of SMEs has increased. Possible cause includes increased focus on the role that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play in driving economic growth. This research evaluated the factors that influence small and medium-sized enterprises' capital structures, as well as their performance predictors, financial accessibility factors, firm characteristics that predict their capital structures, and the impact of capital structure on SMEs' profitability. It was decided to conduct a survey study, with the help of a properly designed questionnaire. The population included both small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners and operators in the study area (South-West, Nigeria). Four hundred small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) purposefully chosen using purposive and proportionate procedure from each state in the region and asked to fill out an online questionnaire (Google Form) to collect the data. This study found a significant relationship between capital structure and the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria's Southwest region. Formal strategic plans, consistent operational procedures, positive work relationships, and the presence of formal business plans were found to have a significant impact on the financial decisions of SMEs, thereby improving overall business performance. Furthermore, the factors influencing SMEs' capital structure decisions include both strategic and organisational components, emphasising the importance of formal strategic planning, consistent operational procedures, positive work relationships, and formal business plans.
