Abstract

UV radiation can generate ROS, thereby damaging neutrophils, leading to the uncontrolled release of elastase, and causing aging. This study intends to examine the antioxidants and anti-elastase activity of the skin of Garcinia dulcis (Roxb.) Kurz fruit in serum gel extract preparation. The methods used in this research are microwave-assisted extraction and antioxidants using the ABTS (2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) method. Three formulas were made with 100 x IC50, 200 x IC50, and 300 x IC50. The test results for the three formulas showed the best antioxidant and anti-elastase activity values in formula 3, with IC50 values of 66.26 ppm and 111.48 ppm. This indicates that the higher the extract concentration in the formulation provides better activity in the serum gel preparation. In the third formulation, evaluation observations were made on the preparation, and a pH value close to the skin’s pH was produced, namely in formula 3. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mundu fruit peel extract has antioxidant and anti-elastase activity. The extract is applied to cosmetic preparations and still provides good antioxidant and anti-elastase activity results.

Abstract

The skin serves as a protective barrier against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, exposure to UV radiation can lead to various skin problems, including changes in the dermis. To prevent UV-induced damage, antioxidants and anti-elastase agents are needed to protect the skin from oxidative stress. This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-elastase activities of Mundu fruit extract (Garcinia dulcis (Roxb.) Kurz) and to formulate a peel-off gel mask using the concentrated extract. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the FRAP and ABTS methods, while anti-elastase activity was determined by measuring the release of p-nitroaniline from a substrate degraded by the elastase enzyme. The results showed that the IC50 value for antioxidant activity using the ABTS method is 29.57 ppm 0.72, and the FRAP value was 185.02 10.23 AAE/g. The anti-elastase activity showed IC50 of 82.21 ppm. Three peel-off gel mask formulations were developed, with Formula 3 (containing extract at 200 x IC50). showing the best performance. These findings suggest that the thick Mundu fruit extract, which tested positive for phenolic compounds, exhibits promising antioxidant and anti-elastase activities and is suitable for use in topical formulations.

Abstract

The cosmetics industry is experiencing rapid growth as consumer awareness of the importance of safe and effective skincare products increases. This creates an excellent opportunity for natural ingredient cosmetics. Garcinia dulcis (Roxb.) Kurz has been proven to have bioactive activities, such as antioxidants and anti-elastase, which can potentially be used for skin care, such as preventing premature aging and maintaining skin elasticity. This study evaluates consumer preference levels for peel-off masks and Garcinia dulcis extract serums. The method used was a hedonic test with parameters of aroma, skin feel, texture, color, absorption, viscosity, and drying time on a scale of 1-5. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The results were that 33.85% of the panelists were neutral towards the serum’s aroma, and 40% did not like the mask’s aroma. A total of 41.54% of the panelists liked the serum’s texture, and 33.85% of the panelists were neutral about liking the mask’s texture. The skin taste parameter showed that 58.46% of the panelists liked the serum, and 36.92% were neutral to liking the mask. The gel serum and peel-off gel mask colors were liked by 46.15% and 44.62% of the panelists, respectively. The gel serum’s absorption rate and the peel-off gel mask’s drying time were liked by 36.92% and 33.85% of the panelists, respectively. 33.85% of the panelists liked the gel serum’s viscosity. The statistical test showed significant differences in aroma, taste, and absorption (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the peel-off gel mask and serum of Garcinia dulcis (Roxb.) Kurz extract has good potential as a skincare product, although further development is needed to improve the aroma, taste, and drying time.
