The results showed an increase in the critical thinking skills of elementary school students using a problem-based learning model. This research can be concluded that using problem-based learning can improve the critical thinking skills of elementary school students. This research implies that it can be used as a reference for improving the critical thinking skills of elementary school students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the increase in the higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) of PGSD students by using an open-ended approach. The study was quasi-experimental research with a non-equivalent control group design conducted in the PGSD UNP department. The results of this study stated that there were differences in the average N-Gain of HOTS of PGSD students who learned using the open-ended approach compared to students who learned using the conventional approach in the basic social studies concept subject. This research proved that there was a significant increase in students’ learning by using the open-ended approach compared to students learning with the conventional approach. The implications of this study can be used as an effort to improve students’ HOTS.

Abstract

IPAS learning in the Merdeka Curriculum is designed to promote meaningful, student-centered learning through discovery-based activities. However, the learning process in grade IV of SD Negeri 01 Bandar Buat, Padang City was still dominated by conventional methods, with lesson modules that were not optimally designed and low student participation, resulting in learning outcomes that did not meet the Minimum Learning Achievement Criteria. This study aimed to improve students’ learning outcomes and learning activities through the implementation of the Discovery Learning model. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles involving 28 fourth-grade students. Data were collected through tests and non-test techniques, including learning outcome tests, observations of lesson modules, teacher and student activities, as well as assessments of students’ attitudes and skills. The results showed an improvement in lesson planning quality from 92.86% in Cycle I to 96.43% in Cycle II, teacher activity from 87.50% to 96.88%, and student activity from 81.25% to 96.88%, all categorized as very good. These findings indicate that the Discovery Learning model is effective in improving the quality of IPAS learning processes and learning outcomes in elementary schools.

Abstract

Learning Science and Social Studies (IPAS) in the Merdeka Curriculum requires active student participation as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills; however, in practice, learning outcomes in IPAS at the elementary school level remain relatively low and instruction tends to be teacher-centered. This study aims to improve students’ learning outcomes in IPAS through the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in Grade IV of SDN 21 Bandar Buat, Padang City. This research employed a mixed-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative) using Classroom Action Research conducted in two cycles. The research subjects consisted of 27 students. Data were collected through observation, tests, and non-test techniques, and analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that the implementation of the PBL model effectively improved students’ learning outcomes, as shown by an increase in the average score from 72.96 with a mastery level of 40.7% in Cycle I to ≥85 with classical mastery of ≥85% in Cycle II. Therefore, the Problem Based Learning model is effective in improving IPAS learning outcomes and supporting the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in elementary schools.
