Abstract

Introduction: The safety of occupants in high-rise buildings is a primary concern, especially in Indonesia, which is prone to fires and earthquakes. The Health Department Building at Politeknik Negeri Jember faces challenges in meeting safety standards, such as insufficient directional signs, inadequate emergency lighting, and suboptimal assembly points. Research Objectives: To evaluate and optimize the emergency response routes in the Health Department Building of Politeknik Negeri Jember. Methods: The study utilized an observational method by directly examining the conditions of the emergency response routes in the Health Department Building. The data collected were analyzed and used to redesign the evacuation routes using SketchUp software. Results: The findings revealed that the evacuation routes did not meet safety standards, with deficiencies including inconspicuous directional signs, substandard emergency lighting, and poorly located assembly points. Recommendations included improving facilities, adjusting layouts, and adding safety signs to enhance evacuation efficiency and occupant safety. Conclusion: Optimizing evacuation routes is expected to improve the safety of building occupants. This study provides recommendations for better emergency response management, which are also applicable to other educational institutions.

Abstract

Introduction: Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment (OHSE) is an important aspect in the industrial and educational sectors, especially for students as future professionals. This study aims to evaluate the level of students' knowledge regarding OHSE after being educated through a digital guidebook. Research Objectives: To describe students' knowledge about occupational health, safety, and environment using the OHSE guidebook. Research Methods: This research was conducted from September to November 2024. This type of research is descriptive, with a population of 50 students from the Health Promotion Study Program at Jember State Polytechnic, using purposive random sampling technique. The measurement tool used was a questionnaire. Results of the study: The study shows that before the education was provided, 46% of students had poor knowledge, 34% had sufficient knowledge, and 20% had good knowledge. After the education, the percentage of students with good knowledge increased to 72%, while those with poor knowledge decreased to 12%. These findings indicate that the digital OHSE guidebook is effective in enhancing students' knowledge about occupational health, safety, and environment. Conclusion: This increase in knowledge is expected to foster more compliant behavior towards OHSE procedures, thereby creating a safer environment on campus and in the workplace. This research provides important insights for the development of OHSE curriculum and training programs in higher education institutions.

Abstract

Introduction: Smoking behavior among adolescents and young adults remains a serious health issue, including within academic environments. Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence and characteristics of smoking behavior among students of the Health Promotion study program at the State Polytechnic of Jember. Method: This research used a descriptive quantitative method with a total sample of 25 male students from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 cohorts, selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. Result: The results showed that 48% of respondents engaged in smoking behavior, with the majority consuming 1–5 cigarettes per day. Most respondents were aged between 19–21 years, a vulnerable phase influenced by social pressure and environmental factors. Conclution: Despite having a background in health education, there is a gap between the students' knowledge and their smoking behavior. Factors such as peer pressure, academic stress, and media influence are the main triggers of smoking habits. These findings highlight the need for more serious efforts to control smoking behavior among students, especially health students who are expected to be role models in promoting a healthy lifestyle.
