Abstract

The existence of a village profile is vital, because it provides a comprehensive picture of the character of the village which includes basic family data, the potential of natural resources (SDA) and human resources (HR), institutions, facilities and infrastructure, as well as the development of progress and problems faced by the village. The Patikalain Village profile updating program carried out by the service team was carried out to provide comprehensive and accurate data to support more effective planning and implementation of development programs, understand community needs, and increase the participation and welfare of village communities. The parties involved in the process of updating the village profile include the village government, and the village community itself who play a role in data collection and information validation. In carrying out this village profile updating program, the service team applies the live-in method, meaning that the service team lives permanently at the location of program implementation from July to September 2024 in Patikalain Village, Hantakan District, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency. The activities carried out to support the Patikalin Village profile updating program include: 1) Recruitment of village youth as prospective pioneers; 2) Training of prospective pioneers to become drivers of village development; 3) Designing data requirements instruments; 4) Participatory household census; 5) Data analysis and compilation; 6) Compilation of village profile documents. A more structured and accurate profile of Patikalain Village, covering various important aspects that were previously not well-documented, can be a strong foothold for more targeted, effective, and sustainable development planning, and can improve the overall welfare of the village community.

Abstract

Abstract

The village of Patikalain, Hantakan Subdistrict, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, has great potential for coffee commodity development, particularly robusta coffee, thanks to its favorable geographical and climatic conditions. However, the village community still faces various challenges, such as limited infrastructure, access to modern agricultural technology, and a lack of knowledge regarding post-harvest processing techniques. This community service program aims to maximize the potential of coffee as a flagship commodity through community empowerment using a live-in approach, conducted from July 23 to September 4, 2024. The community service team resides in the village to gain a deep understanding of the social and economic conditions of the community. The solutions implemented include coffee cultivation training, post-harvest processing, and the formation of active coffee farmer groups, as well as establishing partnerships with buyers to expand market access. Achievements include improved community understanding of coffee cultivation, increased production, and higher farmer incomes. However, inadequate infrastructure and limited access to technology remain challenges for further development. Developing coffee as a commodity in Patikalain Village requires a comprehensive approach with government and institutional interventions, such as regular training, technology access, and improvements to distribution and marketing channels for farm products. This study explores the potential of coffee in Patikalain Village, analyzes the challenges faced, and identifies optimal strategies for developing coffee as a flagship commodity. It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as a foundation for further collaboration between the government, institutions, and farmers to maximize the potential of coffee as a sustainable source of livelihood for the village community.

Abstract

The phenomenon of beauty privilege refers to the social advantages gained by individuals considered physically attractive, yet it simultaneously imposes burdens and vulnerabilities, particularly on women labeled as “beautiful.” This study aims to explore the paradox of beauty privilege among female university students in Banjarmasin and to identify the forms of social pressure they experience in the process of social interaction. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that beauty not only brings benefits but also entails consequences that create social burdens for women. Several participants reported experiencing competition among peers, expressed either openly or subtly through baseless remarks and even social exclusion. Women perceived as attractive are often attached to negative stereotypes, associating beauty with arrogance, lack of intelligence, or reliance solely on appearance. Furthermore, attractive women are also more vulnerable to subtle forms of violence disguised in less direct ways. This research provides insights into the paradox faced by women regarding beauty and the social pressures resulting from societal expectations of their appearance. Further research may explore how beauty bias operates in digital spaces, particularly the role of social media in creating constant surveillance of women’s bodies and lifestyles.
